Frank Miller’s The Spirit Movie Trailer #2

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for Frank Miller’s The Spirit. I’m really not sure what to make of this movie. Some of the shots and sequences look incredibly cool, while others look like a bunch of actors dressed up on some green screen soundstage. You have the promise of sexy women, but a PG-13 rating, with a strong bit zany Looney Toons extract. Watch the trailer below, and tell me what you think in the comments!

Official Plot Synopsis: Adapted from the legendary comic strip, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.

Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?

In the vein of BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY, THE SPIRIT takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

The Spirit hits theaters on Christmas Day, 2008.

That trailer actually gave me some hope for the Spirit and if I hadn't seen Trailer #1 already I would probably be a lot more excited than I currently am
  • TheDaftPunk
A LOT better than the first trailer. I still love the teaser too. Hoping this will be good, I need movies to see this winter.
  • Schork
Sorry for the cursing, I didn't read the rules first. But let that not detract from my point. Mr. Miller deserves some breathing room when it comes to things like this. There are any number of panels you could show someone from Sin City, that when taken out of context would seem silly or insane. It's difficult as we observers have so little to work with, but I think that if anyone has proven themselves worthy of the benefit of the doubt, it's him.

The shot of Eva Mendez teking off that towel sold me!
  • starscream9289
    SOLD!!!!!!!
  • starscream9289
Hell Yeah! IMMA KILL YOU ALL KINDS OF DEATH! that's gonna be my new myspace headline lmao
  • Superman
I'm not feeling this... Sam jackson looks fun, but the rest? Looks like a bad videogame. I'm not into this whole trend to turn every live action adaptation into some cartoon hybrid...
  • REAL6
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh EVA!!!

    Please come my way ;)
  • Oi Vey
you know what? It's not a bad trailer; better than the previous (awkward) one.

It's fine if it's a cartoon hybrid as it's not embarrassing and mess to watch.
  • Like has been said: this one does a lot better job of piquing my interests.

Looks silly but fun. I'll give it a shake.

I can't lie....that movie looks WACK! Samuel L jackson looks looks terrible and listen to way everybody delivers there lines....look again
  • Tendrillar
The dialog might be a little too corny for me, I can see what Miller is trying to do, but I think as a Director he's not really getting the idea across in the performances. But, overall it looks like a lot of fun. And I'd much rather give my money to a shitty Frank Miller movie that something like a "Disaster Movie" or some Rob Cohen piece of shit.

    I'm down.
  • Steelo
well it looks like an updated version of a pulp fiction detective novel. Which is what Eisner did comic wise. Unless Miller is doing something where he's meshing both this and the Sin City world I personally would have liked to have seen something more in homage to standard Eisner. But then I also didn't know the man like Miller did.

I'll give it a shot because it has more original style than a lot of movie. If you're gonna go down, go down in glory.

Alot better than the first trailer but still not enough to get in a theatre seat. The dialogue is horrible and every scene feels like ive seen it before.
  • Christopher Marc
I agree it's a way better trailer...if anything it's going to be worth checking out...I'm just hoping they did enough editing and it doesn't drag out long cheesy lines...the action looks about right when it was compared to Loony Tunes...I loved those cartoons, but I'm thinking this will be a lot less goofy than The Mask was...
  • Holy Shit! (Matt)
This could either be great popcorn fun, or just way too cartoony for it's own good. All things considered the only thing that will keep me away from the theater is legitimate god-awful reviews and word of mouth. Everything points to me having a good time seeing this.

definitely the best spirit trailer yet. this movie makes sense now and looks flippin awesome. dick tracy meets sin city, babysat by the shadow and put to bed by Darkman...could be magic.

OK. I can't say too much.
I've seen some of this movie. Yes, there are parts that look odd, yes there are parts that don't look like the rest of the movie. I think this movie was kind of a trial and error for good old Franky boy. I think he tried a lot of things that haven't been done before, and sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't.
But let me assure you, what I have seen is amazing. I was never a big fan of the racially encrypted original comic book, and I don't know if it stocks up to the standards of the book, but I think Miller has done an excellent job of making it his own. Frank is also the type of person to make sure that if he remakes something, or uses parts of history, he does his job well, and makes G-d Damned sure that the originator would be proud of what he does.
All that being said, I think this movie is going to be very interesting. I think some stuff is going to be new to a lot of people, and some of it the same from other movies we all know and love. I say give it a chance, check it out with an open mind, and you'll like it.

Looked like a lot of fun to me.

XDD, they have a shot from the infamous Comic Con footage in there. I'm guessing that means the clip is actually part of the film.

Not that it's bad thing though, I'm pretty sure that it was intended that way as comic relief. The shot with him just punching the Octopus over and over.... and over again just had me laughing my ass off. Besides, toilets are always funny, right Samuel L Jackson?
  • Dr.Doc
i cant wait til christmas! that is now official number one most anticipated flick! it looks beautiful and epic! cant wait!
  • el_papas
oh man jackson looks like a gay pimp. he looks ridiculous. the footage from comicon was terrible, cheese lines, toilet humor. ahhh. bad.
  • Chris
    I'm liking this preview lots.
  • The Effin Wolfgangg
"Is every G-d Damned woman in this G-d Damned city out of her G-D DAMNED MIND?!"
  • Ghost
I like it, regardless of it being considered Sin City 1.5 or 2 or whatever it looks a lot better then what was shown before.
  • orange cinema
i'll be damned. all the other footage has had me bad-mouthing this film, but this new trailer has me doing a 180. i actually wanna see this now.

sam jackson looks like the weakest link though. man, he has just become a parody.
  • Aaron
Have any of you read Eisner/Miller from Dark Horse Comics? It's an amazing discussion between Will Eisner and Frank Miller a few months prior to Eisners passing. It's also an amazing comic book history lesson.

    Read it!

"Somebody get me a tie and it sure as h*** better be red!"
There are some seriously corny lines in this movie.
  • Matt
this looks like a broke ass version of sin city.
  • Fir3Wolf
It looks ok but I really think Frank Miller should just stick to writing comics because let's face it, it looks like a big Sin City rip off which sure he created but still.
  • gocitizen
I love stylized ideas, but for whatever reason, I'm not feeling like things have any sort of visual consistency in the trailers. Some of it looks pretty cool and some looks soundstage-cheesy. It tends to make the overall impact somewhat underwhelming. I want to like The Spirit, and I know I'll be going opening weekend, but my expectations are pretty low.
  • odd
Pass, this doesnt look good, if this is what every Frank Miller movie is going to look like from now on, count me out.
  • It looks so good...can't wait...see you at the movies!

I just got home from watching the movie and it was great! It is campy and fun and that is what Eisner created with "The Spirit". I have read well over a hundred of the original comics and this is exactly as I had hoped for. The original comics were somewhat deadpan and then humorous. There was no time in 8 weekly pages to worry about logic or realism. I hope there will be another "Spirit" movie or more.
