Valkyrie Movie Trailer

United Artists have released a new movie trailer for Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie. The new desert war footage and the addition of the tick-tock time-bomb score leads me to believe that the film might be a little more intense than I had first believed. The use of split screens seems forced, however, I doubt they are used in the actual film. I do love the way Singer frames his movies. And who doesn’t love the shot of the cigarette burning the fly? Watch the trailer below. As always, please tell me what you think in the comments!

Plot Synopsis:
In a country in the grips of evil, in a police state where every move is being watched, in a world where justice and honor have been subverted, a group of men hidden inside the highest reaches of power decide to take action. Tom Cruise stars in the suspense film, VALKYRIE, based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with Academy Award®-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie to bring to life the story of the men who led the operation to assassinate Hitler. The film also stars an acclaimed cast including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp.

A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler’s own emergency plan – known as Operation Valkyrie – these men plot to assassinate the dictator and overthrow his Nazi government from the inside.
With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, von Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

Valkyrie hits theaters on December 26th 2008. Watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo.

Lookin forward to it, even if nazi germany is americanised!!Tom makes decent films, ~(cocktail apart), shoul;d b good, great director involved and ignore the accents- its the movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dunno about this one. The cutting of the trailer was really distracting for some reason. It seems like more of a drama then a action flick, yet it kept jumping around all fast like making me think it was actually a action movie.

I think the accents do kind of distract a little. It's not so much that they necessarily have to all be German, just that they should at least all have the same accent. I heard British accents in there as well as American.

Now that I reflect upon it this may have been done on purpose though. Nazis are bad. If we see a Nazi in a movie we automatically think of them as a bad guy, which of course they are. But in this movie they are the good guys, yes? So in order to help us relate to the 'heroes' they give them American/British accents. Without the German we can then easily forget that they are the 'evil' Nazis. In fact, in the beginning scene with Tom Cruise in his desert outfit I forgot he WAS a Nazi until he they started showing shots of him in the get up.

    Makes sense, right?

well, for me...costner having an american accent in Robin Hood was fine, but I don't think this Cruise accent is working here
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
First, that was a mosquito, and I couldn't stand the constant flashing of images on the screen/fade to black flash image agian crap. The footage was interesting, but I don't want to attempt watching it again.
  • cellchild
quite innovative montage in this trailer. very good
  • Ohiofile
The trailer was pretty cool, but what is the drama in this story? They don't get it done. Everyone knows that. So, is it Cruise making you hope that he and his family make it out alive? Is it the "heist" aspect? I'm curious enough to go see it.
  • AntoBlueberry
Did Kirk Douglas use a Latin accent in Spartacus? Or Russel Crowe in Gladiator?
  • man. good trailer. still mixed bag.

at least keanu reeves isn't the lead!

i can just hear him saying "i'm an SS office-ur!"
  • Andrew
They should have made this in German, or at least have everyone speaking in German accents. It sounded to me like a bunch of Americans who just decided to dress up like Nazis like they were undercover allies. It was confusing who they all are.

    PREDICTION!

    FAILURE!!!!!!!!!!!!
no one takes Tom seriously anymore.

he needs to do comedy so we can laugh with him instead of at him..
    Tropic Thunder doesnt count.
  • I don't understand the whole language/accent issue. Does anyone who has a problem with this consider that perhaps Singer and company will create some type of narrative device to let us know that the characters are speaking in German, yet we're hearing them in English? HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER did this, likewise with CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER and a few others. It's a pretty simple little trick to get around such things and perhaps by now we should just accept it as a given.

That said, it's a very decent trailer and may go far to alleviate the fair amount of baggage surrounding this movie.

I thought the split screens in the first half of the trailer were pretty well used.
  • Now that was a f&*king trailer. Tom Cruise is still miscast, unfortunately.
  • McGruff
solid freaking trailer. up until the part where the voice says "VALKYRIE" at the end. that was unnecessary
  • Sari
Tom Cruise really needs a hit movie. This isn't it. Still, I'm definitely going to see it.
  • Chromey
If they are ALL speaking english giving them German accents would be ludicrous.
  • Albert Brodsky
I wonder if they're actually successful in their mission to kill Hitler. I guess I'll have to buy a ticket to find out.
  • YoungZe
This is one of the few films that i can only enjoy in german. Nazis talking english with american accent? Nargh, not very believable.

Thinking about it ... Georg might be right. I mean Brian and his Team did a great job in authenticity and failed at one of the most important parts, the language. This happend to many WWII films, which makes them less believable and shitty. Okay, there are exceptions like Schindler's List, they work. But this does not. The only way to enjoy this film is to watch it with german dub and subtitles (if needed).

I also think Til Schweiger would have been a good choice to play von Stauffenberg. I recommend everybody to watch Schindler's List in german. :)

And Kramit the Frog should at least watch the film before he judges it to be all style and no substance.
  • Kramit the Frog
Ridicules, why does everything, and mean everything Hollywood touches these days have to turn into some overblown action/drama sequence. The guys that ACTUALLY did this were in smoke filled basements and scared out of their minds. This could have been a great gritty suspense film but instead it's mission impossible meats pearl harbor. All style, no substance.
  • mike
any sane person can see that the cigarette is burning a mosquito.

that and the swastika-swimming pool looked really effing cool.
  • REAL6
Taht picture of Tom Cruise, is that where he is deciding to tell his wife he's coming out the closet?
  • Georg
I didn't believe a single scene or a single line delivery due to the fact that I _saw_ a bunch of Germans in uniforms but _heard_ a lot of American English. That just doesn't work and that's especially true for a story that is as quintessentially German as Stauffenberg's. Singer and his crew invest so much energy to shoot at the original locations in Berlin, they recreate cars, planes and uniforms and so on, but they pull an epic fail on the most important bit that just has to be right to make this story believable -- the language.

It would've been so cool if Singer actually had the guts to cast only German actors and if he kept the dialogue exclusively in German with subtitles for other markets. Now that's film that I would pay a lot of money to see. "Valkyrie"? Not so much.
  • JoeViturbo
Now the movie is starting to look interesting.

I agree about the split screen, not only is it distracting, it doesn't fit the movie. I feel the same about all of the "fade to blacks". It was fading to black the entire flippin' trailer, what's up with that?

Also, that wasn't a fly it was a mosquito but they are both in the order Diptera so you got pretty close.
  • ricardian
i do look forward to this film very much......the lack of german accent would be because we know they are all german and speaking german is it?...wouldnt an accent sound like allo allo...(a comedy) ...just wondering......im not particularly a tom cruise fan or hater but this looks good so will give it a go. I have been researching the third reich to find out more so will be very interested to see wht they do with this.....they all died horribly for their part in it so about time someone gave it a shout....bravery doesnt have a country does it.....
  • peteo
Glad there's no accent. I prefer if it was all in German, but if they're speaking English, why have accents at all?
  • The new Valkyrie trailer looks ok!! Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of all time. I was just hoping that Bryan Singer would capture that in this movie, because Tom Cruise deserves a Oscar.
  • gocitizen
Glad to see Singer finally do something that is more in line with the potential shown in The Usual Suspects. I like a lot of Tom Cruise films and, even though he has been one strange dude these past few years, I'm able to suspend that from my viewing experience.

As for accents? I dunno. I liked Seven Years in Tibet and didn't realize it was ever an issue until reading this blog. I guess I'm accent proof or something.
  • Christopher Hoult
They had all better bloody die at the end...
  • gah
I'm tired of people giving Singer and Cruise shit. Yeah, one did one bad movie and the other is crazy. Doesn't mean they're not talented. And the whole "they dont speak in German accents" is the stupidest argument ever. As if just putting on an accent would somehow make it more authentic and believable. I think this movie could be pretty damn good if everyone just gives it a chance.
  • aj
Hmmm. This trailer made it look more interesting than the last one I saw at least. It's got one thing going for it. I'm a sucker for Singer's films. It has potential, I can't imagine it being straight awful, if worst comes to worst, it'll just be 'meh'. I still hate Brett Ratner though....
  • Captain Awesome
    Yawn.
  • spikeshinizle
That should be *us movie geeks*
  • spikeshinizle
If the accents are annoying to use movie geeks, then the general public are going to be pretty confused by this trailer. I really think it takes you out of the movie (not that this is the movie, it's just the trailer...but you get my point.)
  • orange cinema
i agree with most here: this looks fantastic. but since it is based on actual events, especially surrounding such a pivotal person/time in history, i think it was a HUGE mistake to not acurately portray the men with german/proper accents.
  • Chris
The lack of accents is a bit of a distraction, but nothing more. Other than that I think it looks great.
  • Sean
    I agree with GregoryV:
Why does Tom Cruise have a perfect American accent? For me that kills a little.

And Peter, none of the split screens felt forced. I did, however, dislike Tommy Boy walking through his own credit. That was just velveeta melting off the frame.
  • Chromey
    Looks fantastic.
  • Superman
Looks interesting but Tom cruise is distracting. Should have gone with a fresh face.
  • Ryan
    meh
Singer is just alright, this trailer didn't do anything for me.
I'm actually not a Tom Cruise hater, but this project can't win me over.
  • george
    Looks incredible!
  • Bill
    love it
  • Freddie
That looks absolutely fantastic. I just hope it doesn't go the way of Matrix Reloaded w/ an awesome trailer and then a shittastic movie.
  • Jim
I can't wait for the final scene when Tom Cruise's character chases Hitler down on foot.
  • LeBigMac
This trailer is definitely a step up from the last one, but just hope the whole non accent thing doesn't take me out of the film.

I can understand Bryan Singer not wanting what happened to "Seven Years In Tibet" happening to "Valkyrie". Brad Pitt's German accent was horrendous in that film.
  • Gart, Bo
    @Peter S

Bryan Singer did direct Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil (underrated), and X2 (one of the best superhero movies). Yes, Superman=BAD. But he is still a very, very capable director.

Also, my friend saw freescreen of this movie. He cannot stand Tom Cruise. He said he is amazing though. Best since Born on 4th July.

    I'll give this a chance.
  • GregoryV
Awesome trailer, way better from the past ones. I do believe! But still, wouldn't have been better if Cruise had a German accent or is that asking too much?
  • hotlist
Pretty good. Wanna see this one. Cruise usually does good flicks.
