Pixar’s Newt Gets Cars 2’s Old Release Date

pixar's newt

Yesterday when we told you that Cars 2 had been moved forward to the Summer 2011, we forgot to tell you that Pixar’s Newt would be getting the old Cars 2 release date of Summer 2012. It wasn’t made clear why the change was made, but I’m assuming that newt probably required more development time, while all the characters of Cars have already been designed, cutting down the traditional pre-production timeline.

newt marks the directing debut of multiple Academy Award winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who made his Pixar debut with the short film Lifted (which premiered in front of Ratatouille). The plot synopsis that was released earlier this years follows: “What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science.”

i'm a solid pixar supporter, but does that 'newt' synopsis sound unbelievably tired and recycled to anybody else? it would almost seem like a step back for pixar.

I would have to agree with you. When I read the synopsis, I was less than impressed. However, my interest in this is still greater than that of Cars 2.
  • Meeeeeeeee
They mostly come at night. Mostly.

Yea the story has been done before many times but I have faith in Pixar. I'm sure they'll pull a big bag of genius out of their minds and blow us away. Again.

Ya, pretty derivative plot outline, and Lifted is my least favorite Pixar short. Still, more excited for it than Cars 2. Good golly, now that I think about it, does this mean we're going to have to weather two straight summers of only sub-par Pixar?

I'm with Orange on this one. I Love Pixar (with a capitol 'L') but...this sounds like it would be made by the guys at Dreamworks. I just pray the don't throw in a sassy animal voiced by Wanda Sykes. But by the sound of that synopsis, who knows?!
  • AJ
I don't think I've ever heard that plot synopsis (or anything like it) from a dreamworks or any other animated movie

You guys are right that it does sound like an overused plotline on love...but Pixar has a magical way of making things more awesome than they sound. When I heard they were making a movie about a fish that loses his son...that sounded like a fairly lame plot, but it turned out to be one of their best movies. I think that it has a lot of promise to be deeper than they are letting on, and they probably won't follow the normal formula that kills movies from so many other companies. I still have high expectations for newt. Cars 2...not so much.

I think thats actually an awesome idea, granted it may be simple or cliche but newts are pretty awesome geckos and such. when i think of it, knowing pixar and their creative talent i think this could be a visually stunning movie. Just imagine all the classic pickup lines or insults towards the newts all the while being trapped under an upsidedown glass while the most likely anti-social scientists are flailing around in the background.

I think its gunna be great.

First "Cars" and now a "Gecko"..... will they offer us insurance in the middle of the film?
  • Monaldo
Meeeeeeeeee, that is perfect. Exactly my initial thought...funny.

I don't care to see another Cars movie either, I enjoyed the first, but not repeated viewings wise. My least fave behind Toy Story 2. Stop with the sequels, Cars wrapped up just fine...if you must milk the franchise, make a million crappy direct to dvd sequels, kept off the big screen.

Newt sounds promising. A couple of Pixar's synopsies sounded moderately pedestrian, and agreed: look how Nemo turned out.
  • Mikey M
I saw the headline and thought it was a movie about Newt from Aliens.
    Oh well.
  • poop
the plot synopsis seems a little bit like ice age 2...
still, this is pixar we're talkin' bout...
so it's gonna be far better!
  • Chip
As of now, the only Pixar movies I'm anticipating are Toy Story 3 and Up. As long as those turn out fine, then I'll be somewhat interested in Cars 2 and newt.
  • cars2hoper
I really hope Cars 2 doesn't suck. I really really hope...
