MGM has hired Steve Pink (Accepted) to write and direct a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The original 1988 Frank Oz film starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as two con men who find that their town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree to a “loser leaves” bet. In 2005, the film was adapted into a Broadway musical starring John Lithgow. No actors have been cast but top-level talent is said to be interested. MGM has gone remake crazy as of late, with Red Dawn, Robocop, Fame and Poltergeist already in various stages of development. I’ll ask the expected question: Do we really need a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?

Rachel McAdams has been cast as Irene Adler, the “enigmatic love interest” in Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.  I’m slightly disappointed that Hollywood needs to add a romatic interest into the mix, even if that romantic interest is played by McAdams. The character appeared in just one of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels, A Scandal in Bohemia from 1891. The film will be based on the forthcoming comic book adaptation which portrays Holmes as a more adventurous and tough version of the classic character. Previously announced: Robert Downey Jr will play Holmes, Mark Strong will play Blackwood, the main villain, and Jude Law has been cast as Watson.

Discuss: Does Sherlock Holmes need a love interest?

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of the Harold and Kumar films, have signed on to write and direct Til Beth Do Us Part for Warner Bros. The comedy is about two friends who have their friendship put to the test when one of them becomes engaged. The film is said to be similar in tone to the Kumar films, but without the crazy fantastical elements. Nobody has been cast as the two male leads, but Warner hopes to have the film in production before April 2009. I’m interested to see what Hurwitz and Schlossberg can do outside of the racial discrimination/weed-infused comedy of Harold and Kumar.

Discuss: Will their next comedy film be funny if you don’t see it stoned?

I really like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, although it can't be good without Steve Martin...
    Rupreck is soo funny.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels isn't an original, its a remake itself. The original was called Bedtime Story which starred David Niven
and brando. So its a remake of a remake! Its going to the stage where hollywood remakes remakes.

On the plus side, this might prompt MGM to release a nice special edition DVD for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

    @Joker--

Most stories have been done before in one way or another, in general.
  • lefthandedpanda
How does Steve Martin still look exactly the same??
  • Beefy
    No, no and no.

Give up Hollywood. We need new blood.

I don't think Sherlock Holmes needs this movie. First Batman pretty much gives up on being "The world's greatest detective" so he can punch people more and now Holmes is a martial artist? I can't see myself enjoying this that much.

    Sloppy seconds.

I think you should just start up a SlashRemake blog Peter, keep this site only for original films. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was an ok movie, wouldn't want to pay to see another version though.
  • I'd like to see if they could pull off adapting the musical of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Lithgow and Butz were excellent as the two con men.
  • Greg
No Dirty Rotten Soundrals doesn't need a remake. Wow I hope they can see if they can get Will Ferrel and John C Reilly in it. Then it would be really realy good. Maybe Judd Apatow can turn up on set, eat a donut and get a exec producers credit. Do you reckon Seth Rogan will make a cameo?

    Yawn.

Its is hard to believe that the people responsible for Harold and Kumar could make anything remotely funny if you're not on every drug, ever. I'm excited to see what Guy Ritchie does with Sherlock now that he' separated from Madonna (seeing as everything he did before he married her was great, and everything after was pretty mediocre).
  • Love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but if this is a movie version of the musical, then I'm in. If it's a straight-up remake, forget it.

If Rachel McAdams is the love interest, then yes he does.

I'd be up for a non-H&K movie from the duo only if they focus more on story and social commentary (like the first one) and less on grossing the audience out (like the second one).

I'm really wondering if i can take another remake. I mean what's up with Hollywood studios man? What's up with all this nostalgia and if it is even supposed to be nostalgic, would it make me want to see the original, or the original of the original? If they loved the originals, why make a new version that would either be a pale reflection of the last and if it can be better will it be better actors or something? What are the chances of that? This seems to be a current trend that's really starting to bug me. I mean think about it, how many remakes outdo the original? Are they gonna do it to all the classics like The Godfather etc? They probably only do it to movies they think they could outdo, so indirectly they probably have a low opinion of the original and if not then its purely capatalizing on the idea of the original. What's worse is that they're buying all these foreign movies and remaking them and it makes it seem like only Hollywood can make good movies. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Hollywood, I just dislike where these studios are going, it's like there's no more creativity encouraged anymore, and the writers are pissed, the actors as well what's going on man?
Yes, SlashRemake Blog Peter, cause we're gonna see alot of remakes for a while. Too me it's all just cheap tricks. By the way, I enjoy watching alot of old movies, but it's not because I'm nostalgic, its simply because they're better.

Just for trivia's sake, the 1988 film, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" was itself a remake of the 1964 film, "Bedtime Stories". Steve Martin reprised Marlan Brando's role, and Michael Caine had the David Niven role. I haven't seen the film myself, but I understand that Marlan and David were hilarious in the roles.
  • Aqualeo
I'll watch just about anything with Rachel McAdams in it...
  • I think a remake of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" would be somewhat difficult to pull off because, with any remake, it bears the responsibility of having to outdo the original. I believe that the cast will ultimately determine the magnetism of the of the film. Therefore, they must be chosen wisely.

  • The race is on ... let's remake a movie from the '90s ... or even from the last decade.

Oh wait, they did that already with "The Incredible Hulk," and they're talking about doing the same with "Superman Returns."

Movie fans should feel like Charlie Brown after Lucy pulls the football from his incoming foot.

I'm cool for another Harold and Kumar flick, the last one ended in Amsterdam so take it from there. (86 the male full frontal) thanks.
I couldn't give a rats ass about Dirty Rotten or Sherlock. ....... I wouldn't see those films in a million years.

I would LOVE to see Norbert Leo Butz in a remake of Scoundrels. I thought no one could top Steve Martin, but Butz was absolutely hysterical in the Broadway version--his Ruprect had everyone in the theatre in tears. Lithgow would be great, too! I would do anything to get a copy of the stage version--funniest show I've ever seen.

I would HATE to see see a remake of this film. Steve Martin and Michael Caine MADE this film. Can we please put a sock in it and stop making shite remakes. Get some originality you Hollywood d*ck heads, no one wants your stupid remakes anymore.

I've read 'Til Beth, and it's a great script. It is definitely not a stoner comedy.
