Could George Clooney Be The Lone Ranger?

On Wednesday, Disney announced that they had signed Johnny Depp to play Tonto in a big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger. But who is going to be playing the masked ranger? AICN’s sources claim that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role. Clooney is a fantastic actor, but something about him as The Lone Ranger doesn’t rub me right. Don’t get me wrong, he’s certainly a better choice than Nicolas Cage, who was once up for the role.

Discuss: Which Actor Would You Cast as The Lone Ranger? Is Clooney a good choice?

And Johnny Depp playing Tonto is any better?
  • Bill
    Frasier, Sandler, Buscemi.
    THE LONE RANGERS

    sorry, couldn't help myself.

In spite of the character's long history on radio and TV and in comics, he's still kind of a cipher. Almost anyone could play him. Not Klinton Spilsbury, maybe, but almost anyone else. The Lone Ranger is kind of a blank slate upon which you could write a complex personality or a TV-movie-type cardboard cutout. Without having a clear idea of what kind of character the Lone Ranger will be in this movie, it's hard to say whether Clooney would be right for the part or not.

That casting doesn't bother me as much as Seth Rogen playing his great-nephew, the Green Hornet.

i'd say viggo mortenson, and i think clooney may be too old, right?

it looks like they are going to model it after pirates of the carrabean, and even then viggo would be great. then again, i've always pictured viggo as roland deschain (dark tower)...

with depp cast as tonto, i can already feel the POTC/disney/bruckheimer slapstick comedy seeping through the script. i'm not saying this is bad, just not the gritty western i'd like to see. but the lone ranger was never a serious western anyhow.

and now i just started picturing depp & clooney all cowboyed out in costume/character, and i'm thinking maybe it might not be so bad. they just might make an excellent on-screen duo, i'm just stuck at the fact that clooney does have the rugged look of a cowboy, but i always thought the ranger was a slendor, young looking guy.

How can he be considered the "Lone" Ranger if he has a sidekick?
  • Bruce Campbell is the only real choice here.
  • Dr.Doc
what are you guys talking about? Clooney rocks in roles where he is the hero and has a homosexual (which is how Johnny Depp will play it, just look at his homo turn in Pirates) sidekick
  • AntoBlueberry
Could this movie become "Wild Wild West" done right?
  • goochspot
I think Clooney could work. I don't think that Depp will play Tonto as a homosexual. I think he would come up with something different. That's what good actors do. Another good option would be Matt Damon. I'm not a huge fan myself, but I still think he's got talent and could pull it off.
  • OldGuy51
If Clooney plays the role straight, and not campy, it could be good. But I'm worried Clooney would play it campy. The Ranger is supposed to be maybe in his mid 20's to early 30's. Tonto is obviously older isn't he? I think Depp could do the role well, but I don't really want a Capt. Jack Sparrow as Tonto interpretation. I think maybe Brendan Fraiser could do the Lone Ranger, but I think he may be too old. Suggestions?
  • I've got three words that scare me from ever wanting to see George Clooney wear a mask again: BATMAN AND ROBIN. Please, no more. Although, Viggo sounds like an interesting choice.

How 'bout a chin I can believe in! Aaron Eckhart all the way baby.
  • Internet
I think it should be Emile Hirsch, don't trust me on the spelling.
  • I like when George Clooney picks these types of roles...my favorite Clooney performance was U.E. McGill in "O Brother..." It is out of the box for him and those roles are my favorite clooney roles.
  • Tekjock
Jonathan you are correct, Bruce Campbell I think would be good
  • jonathan H
Since we got Depp for Tonto, how bout Danial Day-Lewis for the lone ranger? Ha!
  • Brandon Routh or Nathan Fillion... maybe Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb).

Too bad this is a Disney movie. I want a good, solid Pulp/Novel style Western take on "The Lone Ranger". A serious take.
  • I think Brandon Routh or Nathan Fillion... maybe Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb).

It's upsetting that this is a Disney film. I want a balls out PULP/Novel style Action/Western.
  • Mikey M
I don't think a Lone Ranger movie will do good even if they do make it.
  • Three words: BATMAN AND ROBINA. I know, somebody commented before, but Clooney doesn't look well with a mask. Gimme a break, the guy IS the man, but no. Absolutely not.

Hmm, Viggo... interesting choice. How about Eastwood? (kidding) Seriously, Viggo 2would rock. Or how about Di Caprio? How's THAT for a twist? from playing Johnny's younger brother to...

Oh, and anybody remember Johnny in THE BRAVE? Didn't he play an Indian back then? Not so much of a stretch!
  • south texas terror
If clooney is in it they should change the title to the old ranger. Viggo all the way.
  • prophecy_projectz
Hold up Depp is playing Tonto?
When they annouced Depp was in a Lone Ranger film I assumed he was in the lead. I cant see him playing a native american. I dont know it will probably be a different version than the known mythos.

Still I think Clooney can be a decent Lone Ranger.

    George Clooney is 47.

Viggo Mortensen is 49 (and will be 50 in less than a month).

You can't argue that Clooney is too old for the role and the Mortensen isn't. Also, unlike the roles of other "hero" types that have been up in recent years, The Lone Ranger can work as being older.

And if you're going to have Depp be the sidekick, I think you've got to have a bigger name for the lead.
  • Evan
I said it at Ain't it Cool and I'm going to say it here, too: George Clooney is the villain, Butch Cavendish. Johnny Depp is Tonto and Josh Brolin is The Lone Ranger. And again Disney, you're welcome.
  • igroveman
No. Clooney is too sleazy. This would be like casting Mickey Rourke as Superman.
  • mssuzieq312
Well in my opinion the role of Tonto who referred to the lone ranger as Kemosabe (meaning friend) should be portrayed by a real Native American and they should search beyond Hollywood for the role of The Lone Ranger.. A complete unknown would be best!!

    Who was that masked man?

    Why don't you know?

He is "The Lone Ranger" as the "Calvary Charge plays in the background"
  • alan
    george clooney all the way!!
  • Anonymous
Brolin is a lot of fun as a villain (see American Gangster, Milk, or W.).
  • Cplus
    Affleck.
  • Foom
Bruce Campbell would be the best choice.
  • thefett
Remember Batman and Robin - the worst Batman movie ever......
  • tczieggy
I think Cloony would be good for the Lone Ranger, but Jonny for Tunto? I thoght a real Indein had to play the part of an INdin?
  • Jayson Kriedler
I remember a few years back there was another masked man on a white horse who I thought would make a great Lone Ranger. That man was the Phantom as played by Billy Zane.
  • Amber
Johnny is part Cherokee. Does anyone not know that? All the way with Johnny!!
  • Hairul
How bout Eric Bana or Gerard Butler
  • BRAD HARDY
they should try another younger unkown for the lone ranger, and a native american for Tonto, with a lot of action, rough, down to earth western,no fake crap, just real good action and of course a good story.we all know how the lone ranger came to be.
  • Peter J.
Viggo is an excellent horseman, and a great actor. But . . . he might not have the right look. Even in LOTR he was portrayed a "possible bad-guy" in the first film.

Josh Brolin would not work either. I like the thought, but he's not a "goodguy".

You couldn't bring in an unknown, that shipped sailed after Depp signed on.

I hate saying it, but Heath Ledger would've been the perfect Lone Ranger. That dude was next Paul Newman (now they're both dead).

Brad Pitt wouldn't work, especially so close after playing Jesse James.

It's difficult to say. They probably turn it into a vehicle for Zac Effron, since it's Disney. That could be good new though, b/c they won't want to make it slap-sticky.

The whole "slap-stick" thing is so they can appeal to kids and sell toys and videogames with this film. Hopefully they realize that the Lone Ranger is a valuable enough property to risk making enough money off a good flick rather than whoring that character out.

Clooney though? He'd likely make a better badguy, than another hero (ya Batman was terrible).

If they want a real actor to play the part, they'd get that Ryan Gosling. I can definitely see that guy cowboy-up and kick some ass, tag-team style w/ Johnny D.

    TAAG-TEEEAAAM!!!!
  • farawayeyez
    Depp is native American
  • doug stone
George CLOONEY AND JOHN DEPP would not make a good fit for an american icon like the lone ranger and tonto. Hollywood tryed this in 1980 and it failed. There has to be two young actors out there that can play the role,as it should be played. I would like to see the lone ranger and tonto come back . With todays film making technolgy and the right actors playing the part it could be a great movie ,but not CLOONEY and DEPP.
  • Susan Todd
I do not think George Clooney would make a good Lone Ranger.
I think they need to get a younger little known up and coming
guy to play the lead. Just cant picture Clooney on horseback.

I can deal with Johnny Depp as Tonto as long as he plays the role seriously as an Indian and doesnt come across as "pirate" trying to be an Indian. Not sure if Depp has the scope to be able to carry this off.
  • Melanie Smith
Don't think Depp or Clooney is a good choice for this.

Takes someone who will not make a mockery out of the character and what he stood for.
  • Texas Jack
Hope that they will keep to the original story and not try to hype it up with a 21st century version of The Lone Ranger.

Have heard of a look-alike person doing appearances of The Lone Ranger. www.lonerangerfanclub.com/jr

It appears he upholds all of the moral integrity from the days of yesteryear of The Lone Ranger and Clayton Moore.
  • Isa Rodack
love cloony, but he's not the western look. bruce boxlietnerwould be good, but now he's too old
  • WILLIAM R. RUSSELL
The Lone Ranger has been a favorite of mine since the mid 1940. There have been two very bad attempts one from Hollywood another from television. There has to be a native american and a young upcomming actor for the Lone Ranger and Tonto
  • Tony G
Who's the guy who stars in Lost - he would be good. If Depp plays straight he will be a good Tonto. I grew up with the Lone Ranger and hope they do a serious job and don't turn it into a joke. Who saw the Warner TV effort with the Chad Michael Murray. He would actually be okay if he had a decent story and script.
  • Hal Doy Sampson
why can't we have a true native american who is athletic and can really ride a horse play the part of Tonto. I know Tom Sellic is too old for the part but can't we find someone like him for the Lone Ranger. (without the stach) I'll bet there are plenty of stunt men out there that could do the job. Please Disney--- don't ruin this great american hero.
  • eric
For the lone ranger, it needs to be someone cool, mysteries, and maybe a little dark. So, i'm thinking like Ray Liotta, Edward Norton, or even Robert Downey Jr
