I just spent the last six and a half hours in the Kodak Theater in Hollywood watching Disney’s big keynote event. So the next few stories will be about the big announcements that came out of the presentation.

Johnny Depp has been cast in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer produced adaptation of the classic old-time radio and early television show The Lone Ranger created by George W. Trendle. The series followed a masked Texas Ranger in the Old West who rights injustices with the aid of his native American assistant, Tonto. He gallops along on his white horse Silver. The character’s signature quote is “Hi-yo, Silver, away!” Depp will play Tonto. Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have been writing the script. No start or release dates have been announced.

Depp must have signed a multi-picture deal with the studio, because it was also announced that the actor would play The Madd Hatter in Tim Burton’s 3D part live-action, part computer animated adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Principal photography is set to begin in November, with a March 5th 2010 release date previously announced. Concept art from the film was shown, showing the classic Alice in Wonderland scenes done in Tim Burton style, complete with curved and slanted corners. Everything is really stylized. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb have huge heads, and are shaped like upward missiles. None of the characters look like a dramatic departure from the traditional designs.

At the conclusion of the presentation, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Richard W. “Dick” Cook announced “How about another pirates movie!?” signaling that Depp was now signed for Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

Discuss: What do you think of the choice of Depp as The Lone Ranger or Madd Hatter? Do we really need another Pirates film?

  • can't wait!!
  • JP Dyno
Lone ranger depp is a strange choice.. But i never saw the TV series so i guess I dont really know what its like. As if anyone didnt already know depp was going to be the madd hatter. Lastly... no...i dont think we need another pirate movie. I loved them but i think its taken its course.
  • i agree strange choice but we all know he can do it. anyway, i really want to see what tim burton can do with the alice story. and lastly, i really dont think we need another pirates movie but of course we'll be getting one cause theyre moneymakers.
  • Ghost
Wasn't there a Lone Ranger story in where the actual character is played by a number of brothers and once one falls another would take his place?
  • is pirates 4 necessary?
  • Captain Awesome
    Depp in a Burton film?!?!?!?!?!

    * GASP *
  • joshua
ohhh big suprise depp is in another burton flick
  • The Kernal
Cast someone else as the Ranger. I think Depp could make more of of playing Tonto.
  • Patrick O'Riley
Johnny Depp wil be Burton's Mad Hatter? I haven't been this shocked since Clay Aiken revealed he's gay!
  • Jmoney
maybe it's because i havn't seen Depp in a really good serious role in awhile but i'm not really feeling his acting lately, i couldn't care less about any of these movies, they all seem like more fluff.
  • D
good lord. another pirates. though, the ending of pirates 3 annoyed the hell out of me. improper ending. don't care for the movies, but the ending was bad anyway.
  • Can he be the Lone Ranger? Why not?
Can he be the Mad Hatter? Well, it's Burton, so of course he's in it in some capacity.
    ...but another Pirates movie? WHY?????????????????
  • Both surprising and unsurprising at the same time. Johnny has always stated in interviews and such that he's more than willing to do something because he knows his kids will love it. All of these roles sound like something his kids will probably dig while they are young. Rest assured, if that's the case he'll be back in art house and moody films when his kids enter their late teens.

And Pirates 4 IS totally unnecessary, but it will make bank for all parties involved. Plus, whether or not you actually liked the sequels, the fact remains that Captain Jack, maybe only second to Harry Potter, is the most popular character of any medium over the past decade. He isn't going away anytime soon.
  • David E
Please god no more Pirates movies. The last one was so awful. Well, the last two were sooooo awful. The last one especially. It was like watching an episode of Lost.
  • Dan
    No... More... Pirates...
  • Prophecy_Projectz
    He's done.
  • Bull
Even though I'm usually pumped for any Johnny Depp project, all three of these films seem completely underwhelming. In fact, I've already forgot about them.
  • if this new POTC4 movie is an excuse for some Keira Knightley scenes where she is showing those delicuos legs of her i say bring it
  • nick
i didnt even make it all the way through the 3rd Pirates film.
  • volvo
    waaaaah!
  • larry
alice in wonderland will be the only one i'm interested in.
  • Justin
Man, for the consciencious and artistic persona that Johnny Depp has cultivated over his career, this is pretty surprising. It's obvious he likes teh $$$$$.
  • Depp as Tonto is great casting (he is part Cherokee) - I always hate Tonto being the cliched Indian sidekick and would have thought Hollywood would cast someone like Sonny Landham from Predator - the new comics where Tonto is more like an apache ninja is way cooler and with Depp as Tonto all we need is Brad Pitt to play John Reid in his Jesse James outfit (damn, that movie will probably keep him from doing this one)

Need to have someone at least as big as Depp and same age for it to follow closely to the original story - but if they do old Tonto training new young Ranger I'll scream.
  • "At Worlds End" is a really good movie. That said, there's no need for any further POTC adventures.
  • Rob
Pirates is already two films too long. Do we really need a fourth? The first one was suprisingly good. The next two were barely watchable.
  • I'll pass on Pirates. I would love to see Depp work with someone who isn't Tim Burton. Tonto sounds pretty interesting though!
  • Rena
I would love to see him as the Mad Hatter. That character always freaked me out as a kid. No more pirates movies please. I get it he reaaaally loved playing captain jack sparrow.
  • bob
Here's what I think starting from best to worst opinion about depp's roles

Alice In Wonderland - i am interested, but one thing that annoys me is all the haters out there. i don't see you guys complaining about martin scorsese having leo dicaprio in all his movies these days.

Lone Ranger - pretty interesting choice, let's see what he can do as Tonto

Pirates 4 - just stop it. i got through dead man's chest, but i left at world's end. i guess he just can't refuse the money.
  • Captain Awesome
I hope the new Michael Mann "Public Enemies" get's him out of this Eddie Murphy "funny man" movie rut.
  • /m
    kachingggg!$!
  • Matt
bob brings up a good point. why does everyone seem to complain about burton having depp in multiple films when there are no complaints for scorsese having dicaprio in multiple films? let's see you guys answer that and i don't want to hear any departed excuses
  • skaught
because burton is scorsese's ball sweat?
  • w smith
I would be more interested if Burton's Alice was going to be a super dark R rated version. It's probably going to be a middle of the road PG-13 watered down mediocre affair. I'm Still interested, and Depp is the obvious choice of Mad Hatter - lets hope he pulls off more of a Sweeney caliber performance and less of a Wonka this time.

Lone ranger? Who knows. Hard for me to imagine if it isn't a satirical version. Why wouldn't they get a real native american to play Tonto otherwise? Pirates 4? Yep, it's a paycheck I guess. Hopefully it at least makes less than the first 3 to discourage any further sequels.
  • Garko
    @skaught

    *CLAP*.......*CLAP*.........*CLAP*

    Brilliant
  • Kim
I'll be interested to see Tim Burton's interpretation of Alice In Wonderland - I love his visual style.
  • ajt8503
As a Depp fan I'm interested to see him in anything. I don't know anything about the Lone Ranger besides "Hi-yo Silver away" so it could be interesting. I've always liked Alice in Wonderland and can't wait to see the Burton spin on things. Yes at Worlds End may not have been as good as the first. But I think if you leave out the Will and Elizabeth characters in the fourth one and just have it be Capt. Jack and Barbosa going after the Fountain of Youth then I think it can be a really fun movie. Capt. Jack is one of the most entertaining characters in the past decade, Depp just completely owns it.
  • Yes, we need another Pirates movie, and here's why:

    1) The third movie just didn't feel like a good ending. Sure, the huge final battle has been fought, and the trilogy is finally complete, but it doesn't feel that way.

    2) Money, money, money. C'mon, this Pirates stuff is business.

    3) Another chance at redemption; could this out-perform LotR's in the box office as well as at the Academy? Maybe. It's a shot for Depp that LotR's never gave Bloom.

    4) Pirates rule. Another movie about pirates? Hell yeah.
  • POTC 4 can be radically, amazingly awesome. As long as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan are left out. Starting a new series solely based on the further adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow could be a lucrative move for Disney and Depp could play him in another trilogy, making it a total of six movies.

There is no end to the mythology and folklore they could bring into the Pirates movies. Jack Sparrow may have been saved from Davey Jones' Locker, but can he survive the gambit of seafaring stories that abound in the wide world?

POTC 4, 5, and 6 will be awesome as long as it's a continuation of Jack Sparrow's story, and not of Will or Elizabeth.
  • Mattuk
i used to watch that series when i was young...

    interesting choice....

    "Depp will play Tonto"

while I am not particularly interested to see any of the three movies (especially not another 3+ hour CGI nonsense), I understand the career plan behind it. and I have to say it makes sense: make yourself a blockbustermovie-star with popcorn movies, use that status to get your buddy's movies financed, and get superrich while doing so. so, congratulations, johnny depp, smart guy. just avoid becoming the next nic cage.
  • Elpizo
YES ANOTHER PIRATES MOVIE JUST WHAT EVERYONE WANTS!
  • ha ha. 'Tonto' the name of the Lone Rangers native american assistant means 'stupid' in spanish. I wonder how politically correct people are going to destroy culture this time by standing up and blindly defending things that aren't even made to take criticism... wait. he's native american. Never mind, I completely forgot that politically correct people only defend blacks, jews, and women.
  • I'm going to say, yes, we do need another Pirates film. I felt that Pirates 2 and 3 were really just one long film in two parts (ala Matrix 2 and 3 or Back to the Future 2 and 3). I think the Pirates series can be compared quite accurately with the Indiana Jones trilogy. The first film was something very very special that astounded audiences worldwide. The second was when the creators realized that they couldn't emulate the success of the first and just went crazy with it, creating a love/hate film that you can argue a lot about. The third was an awesome fantastic adventure. I want my Pirates 3.

I also echo the comment above the Will and Elizabeth should be left out of Pirates 4. I think their story is complete (you could argue that it went on too long), and we need to follow Captain Jack's adventure now. I'm iffy on whether Barbossa should return.

Besides, Captain Jack is such a well written character. He could easily carry ten films, let alone four.

I have faith in Verbinski, Elliot and Rossio. I'm probably one of the very few people who is not only looking forward to Pirates 4, but is actually excited about it.
  • artgood
Depp as the Mad Hatter in a Burton film? To be expected.

Depp as Tonto in a Lone Ranger film? They are going to have cast one heck of a movie star to play the Lone Ranger alongside Depp.

Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in another Pirates film? Ditch Swann and Turner, put Jack Sparrow in at least 90% of the scenes of the movie... can anyone say Summer Blockbuster? I'll pay to see it.
  • Chris
Boring. I was looking forward to seeing Depp return to more interesting material like Shantaram and Rum Diary. Guess he's gonna stick with the boring Disney blockbusters for the foreseeable future.
  • Justin
I'll be even more shocked if Helena Bonham Carter plays the Queen of Hearts.
  • $$$$$$$$$....
  • Greg
If there is another Pirates film, I'm going to visit the Disney Head Offica and slash my throat in the parking lot. Hopefully Disney will film that and anyone who saw it will agree that it's 100% better that POTC 1,2 and 3.

No Need for a 4th when the first three could only hope to be Cutt Throat Island
  • Lilla
    We need a Pirates 4, oh I can't wait :D:D:D:D:D !!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Ann
This is great! Another Pirates movie, I will watch it! I love all three movies and this fourth movie is a great idea!!!
