I Am Legend Prequel

It is official, Warner Bros has greenlit a prequel to I Am Legend. Will Smith has signed on to reprise his role as Robert Neville, and Francis Lawrence has returned as director. Looks like Lawrence won’t be finding time to work on Chuck Palahniuk’s Survivor anytime soon. According to Variety, D.B. Weiss (The Game) is writing the script based on a detailed plot outline that was developed over the past few months by Smith, Lawrence, Akiva Goldsman (producer and screenwriter of the original).

The prequel will follow Neville in the last days before and after the man-made virus kills/mutates New York City. A sequel was considered, but obviously wouldn’t have been possible without starting over with a completely new lead character/actor. No word on if author Richard Matheson was consulted about the film. Apocalyptic stories usually sit in one of two categories, pre-Apocalyptic (ie Armageddon, Independence Day) or post-Apocalyptic (I Am Legend, Children of Men), so it will be an interesting change to see a film which might straddle both.

Discuss: Do you want to see a prequel to I Am Legend? I’d rather see Lawrence tackle Palahniuk’s Survivor.

    SUPER LAME. enough said.

"witness the film that will show you danger all around the protagonist but you know he will survive on to do 'I Am Legend' "

    NO TO THE PREQUEL

One thing that reallllly confuses me, at least from a studio point of view, is why Warner Brothers didn't choose to use the alternate ending for I Am Legend (ya know- the one where Will Smith DOESNT die?). Not only did that ending work better with the story in my opinion, but it also would have let them easily make a normal sequel instead of some weird prequel. come on now wb, think about these things!
anyone know why they went with the 'let's kill will smith' ending?
  • Christina
Um, okay it's kinda obvious. The other ending was not only stupid, but it also didn't work in as well with the "i am legend" idea. He dies, then he's a legend to the people that he saves with the antidote he passes on. He wouldn't be a legend to them if he were there. Also, the other ending was cheesy, and obviously would have made the movie unsuccessful because it would suck. Will Smith died because throughout the whole movie, he was trying to fix everything, and in the end he did, but his life was the price he had to pay. The movie would have been horrible with the alternate ending.
  • seanandagain
jesus, read the book. he is not a legend to the people around him, it is called 'i am legend' because just like in our society of humans, in this new society of psuedo-vampires, smith is the legend. the other ending was much much more in the spirit of the book and it's general point. in our reality, vampires stalk the shadows and we're not sure if they exist, some believe, some say it is just legend. in the book, and film, smith is the legend to the vampires. he stalks around in the day and hunts them. fool.
  • seanandagain
and so in that ending smith realizes finally what he has become: a legend. in the theatrical ending, it's just some crazy american dumbass who thinks the only way to solve anything is by blowing stuff up. think a little bit about it.
  • mark
bcus the film is based on the book, and in the book he dies. Also its not supposed to be a feel good film, and the alternate ending was awful in comparison
  • Bill
    i do not like this

They need to make a feature film prequel to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I've always wondered what happened in that one fight...

Seriously, Will Smith needs to stop. Forever.
  • felix
Lmao. Hasn't everyone wondered what happend in the fight?
    I agree with you.
  • candelario is abitch
excuse me mr. or ms. "Candelario Rickbury", whatever:
NO, Will Smith does not need to stop. ALL of his movies are good! hello, are you blind?

He is an Academy Award nominated actor. So obviously people enjoy him asshole. Shut up! & stop hating. If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything! Didn't your ugly momma ever teach you that!
  • gah
Okay, A prequel? What could they possibly explore with this?
  • Joey
I'll watch it if they quit with the cgi infected
  • Joseph Fritzl
    awful.
  • I'm going to say no to the prequel. The flashback sequences did a good enough job of explaining what happened.
  • Would I watch it? Maybe on DVD.

Is it a good idea? Yes. It's all about the money, gentlemen. Will Smith is about making money; I'm not saying that it's the only reason they're making this movie, but I'm sure it's a huge factor.

The only problem I have with this movie is Smith.

Why, Will, why? From Fresh Prince to Independence Day, from iRobot to Pursuit of Happyness. C'mon, give it a rest. You don't need this crappy movie riding on your conscience (much less your already flawed resume).

I have a hard time imagining this turning out to be a good film, although it may be an unprecedented concept. Has anyone ever made a prequel to a film which was based on a book or short story, but such that the prequel itself was original?
  • volvo
is the hulk gonna be it?
  • WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW? THE END IS NIGH
  • Superman
    aww hell naww
  • Swegarden
theyll do anything to make money
  • I'd be totally down for this. The first half of the film (prior to the CGI monster cluster-fuck) was by far better than the second. More exploring day-to-day post-apocalyptic adaptations, less brainless smashing and killing. Plus, his dog would be alive again.
  • Tom
How about not going through with this prequel thing, and instead wait about ten or so years, and actually do an adaptation of Matheson's (fucking awesome) book?

The book's version of Robert Neville is such an interesting, haunted character, and while I thought Smith did fine with what he was given, he was basically just a less developed version of Tom Hank's character from Cast Away.
  • me-likey-I-AM-Legend
Well said man. I completely agree with you. The book was WAAAYYY better, and though the movie wasn't bad, I feel that I would've liked it a whole lot better if it just didn't have the name "i am legend" attached to it and just a completely different guy, having no ties to the original book. As a stand alone movie, it was actually pretty good; as a movie adaptation, not so good. His character was just a different version of tom hanks, but with hank you really felt screwed over with the fellow, in I am Legend, you kinda already knew Smith's character could hold his own, never having to develop into a survivor.

I wont go to theater and pay to see this. As other people expressed in here, the flash backs were sufficient in explaining what happened. I am also in favor of a Sequel based off the alternate ending, not sure how good that would be, but at least has potential.

I am just with everyone on this, I to was confused why the alternate ending wasn't used. Could it be that the studio execs were cowards, thinking that Will Smith had to die to legitimize the movie just as Charlton Heston did in "The Omega Man"? I thought Will Smith living worked much better. The way he died just didn't make sense, it was pointless actually. He could of just as easily crawled inside that tunnel with the Woman and child still setting off the explosion. It was just sloppy.

This is a bad idea period. 'I Am Legend' got by at the box office moderately well -- however a 'prequel' would be a terrible move to make. What more could you possibly say about the story?
  • Oi Vey
If Lawance chose this over Survivor, it's obviously about the movie and a reason why he'll NEVER grow as a director.
  • Live your Life
Very nice, more Will Smith as Robert Neville, plus I want to see what happened in the chaos of the city like in his flashbacks...A sequal? the should say Robert Neville had a twin brother or something and just make the story crazy..IDK just my opinion....

Rest in Peace- "Wiliam L. Smith"
you were truly a great person...
  • i guess its a good idea to do another one, the first made tons of money so this one will too. in my honest opinion, i would love to see Survivor by chuck palahniuk finally get made into a film. the book was great and i know it would make a great film. i guess we will have to see if choke is any good before we get anymore palahniuk films.

also on a side note, haunted would make a great miniseries.
  • D.A.
Actually there is a lot in the book that was not explored in the movie, that I would've really liked to see.

For example: His coping with the fact that he is all alone and has to live with himself and survive. How he reinforces his home to protect against the "vampires".

And of course, make it clear that the creatures are vampires, because people who didnt read the book didnt get that part.

those are just a couple of things I feel they can really touch on in the prequel.

what do you guys think, especially those who read the book
  • "They're not gonna stop."

The prequel could be an interesting expansion of the story if the script pulls in a lot of the details surrounding the "culture" of the mutated people. Why did the mutated humans group together in the dark? Etc....

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i waanna watch it........i am happy he died in the original....for once a good ending.....not looking for a sequel from the start.......... i loved the dog actually.....hoping to see more fun of him
  • spikeshinizle
I've got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I love the book and think that the first half of the movie was really enjoyable.
The second half wasn't so great, although I think the original ending suited the film much more. The CGI was a result of them not being happy with the actors in suits and makeup, so they were kind of screwed in that department at the last minute.

Then again, there is no prequel story written by Matheson (who's an awesome writer!), if they run the story past him and he likes it, then I'm all for a prequel. Francis Lawrence has a good eye and knows how to shoot this kind of film. If it's Neville adjusting to being alone, leading up to the routine we see at the beginning of the first film, then it could be quite interesting.
  • marz
mcgruff- i was wondering the same thing.they should have used the alternate ending as the real ending of the movie.then a sequal would have been easy to do.as for the author of the original being a part of the prequal.. i doubt it.did anyone read the novel..or should i say, short story.because it wasnt all that long.i thought the WHOLE book was going to be the story but found out the book was actualy a bunch of short stories.the 'i am legend' part of the book was totaly different from the movie.the zombies were more vampire like..AND THEY TALKED!will smith's character in the book was white(and not a doctor),and his dog was already dead.i could go on and on but some of you may actualy want to read the book.my point is,they changed the story line so much that consulting the author even for the 1st film seemed unnesessary.
  • andru
    I will be legend????

First film was crap, the book is much more competent and interesting, whilst the movie is poor and incoherent.
  • Personally I can't wait. Watching people frantically pack suitcases for an hour and a half is the reason cinema was invented.
  • I Am Legend was okay...but let's see what they have in mind for the prequel?
  • Hendo
I think that it's a good idea. We'll get to see HOW he survives and becomes the last man. I'd rather see this than a sequel. Sure we'll know he survives but that's the case with about 99% of movies featuring a hero. I mean did you ever think for a second that Venom was going to kill Spiderman? No. But we go to see the journey.
  • As long as they improve on the CGI for the creatures/vampires.
  • E
Like "Tom" said make the actuall I Am Legend as Matheson wrote it . This popcorn I am legend was horriable and the prequel will only be worse
  • Will Smith is just grabbing the green here. You can make a sequel. Cast Jennifer Garner, set the story in LA and market the film as the last female alive! This is very disappointing news!
  • I got it! How about a Castaway Prequel! That would be amazing!

Seriously. Prequels for the most part are lame. Name a great Prequel that has been worth our time?
  • Matthew
I don't know if you guys have ever read the book but there's plenty of amazing material in the book that the movie never explored. The book is so badass compared to the movie. The movie is just a PG-13 idea and doesn't even compare to how amazing the book was.

I would prefer a whole remake of the movie where they actually capture what the author was trying to capture. They should have stuck with what was going on in the book.
  • Mikey M
Wish they had used the book for a script. Much better and there's even a social commentary about being different from others.
    The movie was pretty lame.
  • boisvertfj
While I don't think we need a prequel... i'd probably see it.

But, i'd much rather them to Survivor.

Or go back in time and to I Am Legend right, like it was in the book.
  • south texas terror
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie version of those comic book chapter they had on the dvd. The one with the guy in prison or the family looked in the basement were cool
  • se7en
Hell yes, I want a prequel.

    Loved the movie.
