DJ Caruso Wants to Shoot Y: The Last Man in IMAX

Christopher Nolan’s use of the IMAX camera for The Dark Knight has caused filmmakers to reconsider how they will shoot the future of tentpole movies. First Jon Favreau said he would be interested in filming scenes from Iron Man 2 with IMAX cameras, and now DJ Caruso tells Collider that he has already thought about using the 70mm technology for sequences in the yet to be greenlit adaptation of Y: The Last Man. But for now, Caruso’s Eagle Eye is making history, as the first Hollywood film to be released in Digital IMAX in 15 locations.

Discuss: What upcoming films would you like to see scenes shot in IMAX? The Hobbit seems like the most obvious choice…

  • After watching Eagle Eye last night. I will go see whatever this man puts out. Eagle Eye was awesome. 2nd best film of 08!
  • MrMad2001
    Meet Dave 2.
  • Rocket
A well done Green Lantern movie on IMAX would be mind blowing.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Yeah, I was gonna say the Hobbit but you stole the words right out of my mouth.
    Give em back!
    ;)

Y: the Last Man is such a great graphic novel and I'm glad that, if anything, it's getting some well deserved attention. I'm crossing my fingers that they can pull it off.
  • Chimaera
Wait, did they actually use the IMAX camera in Eagle Eye? And yes, the Hobbit would be the obvious choice for me as well :)
  • Graham
a silver surfer movie in IMAX would be rad
  • Captain Awesome
DJ Caruso should shoot himself in the face...in high-def.

one of the key images in apocalyptic films, is the desolation, abandonment, and 'ghost-town' feeling/look that the world is left in. so i can see IMAX absolutely lending itself to make YTLM visually stronger. that 70mm would really capture and enhance the ruinous state of the world.

i don't know about the whole way through though, certain moods might be hurt by an overwhelming image. not to mention that the noise factor on those cameras makes intimate filming very difficult - if not impossible - for the actors.

the upcoming hobbit films is a good call. i wonder if a pixar film, or another cg animated film would be cool with those IMAX properties. also i think the new terminator film might be cool if they used it for large action sequences the same as TDK. (NO i'm not saying to make it like TDK - just saying that those scenes were remarkably stronger because of the IMAX. the new terminator film will have similar action sequences...)
  • Step Up 3D would be awesome in IMAX...4realz
  • Dr. Handsome
You've Got Mail now in Digital IMAX 3D
  • I feel pretty ripped off by Eagle Eye being billed as digital Imax - sure, it looks good in an Imax theatre, but it if doesn't use the full aspect ratio of Imax, its pretty deceptive.
That said, I'm definitely always willing to shell out a couple more dollars to see a film in Imax... but if they keep slapping the Imax on films that can just screen in those theatres, I'm going to be skeptical before going in.
