Cars 2: New Release Date, Story Details, Short Car-Toons

During the animation presentation of the Walt Disney Showcase, John Lasseter announced that Cars 2 would be pushed forward to the Summer of 2011, from the film’s previously announced 2012 release slot. He also revealed that the idea for a sequel came to him as he was traveling the world doing publicity for the original movie. He wondered what the characters of Cars would think about all these different locales, with the weird traffic situations and strange foreign automobiles. The sequel will follow Mater the tow truck who gets his passport and takes a worldwide trip with Lightning McQueen.

A series of short interstitial Cars-based cartoons titled Car-toons will begin to air on the Disney Channel. One or two might even be shown theatrical before Disney released films. The shorts are structured as Mater’s Tall Tales, and each new short will feature a new outrageous story. The first short in the series was shown. Mater explained to Lightning how he use to be a fire truck, and even saved McQueen from a burning building. The next two shorts will feature the tall tales of how Mater use to be a daredevil (ala Evil Knievel) and a bull fighter. I wasn’t a big fan of these shorts, and Cars was my least favorite Pixar film to date (aside from the Route 66 stuff).

still cant believe they are making this. i haven't seen it but to me, its the least interesting idea of all the pixar films.
  • evan
Hey.. on a good note Toy Story 3 is being made. Release date of 2010 ! A better film overall.
  • james moore
i honestly do not think it was not made for you it was made for the kids
  • Josh
Thank you FINALLY someone says it. My son LOVES cars and cannot wait for the 2nd one.
  • Name
"Joseph Fritzl" - what a sick nickname!!!! ;-(
  • Becca
My son has been a Cars fan from day one and I am am advide Disney fan and this is one of the only movies that I do not mind watching repeatedly. I am thrilled that they are making a sequel.
  • Dan
Cars was the worst of all the Pixar films. I can't believe that they are going to waste all that talent on a sequel to their worst film. They should come up with a new idea, cuz I'm pretty sure that Larry the Cable Guy isn't popular any more.
  • Amy
How old are you, cuz I have a 3, 6 and 8 years old kids and they loved the Cars movie. I loved it too. We are a big Nascar family and it fit in perfectly with our interests. My 3 year old still watchs the movie almost everyday and he has all the toys for the movie that have come out.
  • lizzyt
my son ethan, loves cars the movie. he has so many cars items, and will be getting even more for christmas. i cant believe someone would say how bad of a movie it is. my 3 year old who knows it by heart would disagree.
  • jenny
cars is a fantastic film no matter how old u are its fantastic but to each his own and everyone has an opinion and i respect that
  • Michelle
I don' think the kids really care if Larry the Cable Guy is popular or not! All they hear is Mater. My son is going to be thrilled when he finds out that there is a second Cars movie as I sure many youngsters will be! If you don't like it, don't watch it!
  • Blake Brown
i feel like Cars is the weakest of the all the Pixar films. It was overly long and not very funny.

Very sad that they are choosing to make a sequel.
  • Name
    Are you 6 yrs old?....

    What's happening with Newt?
  • Matt
Guys its all about the merchandise. Kids are buying all of these car toys and disney is just cashing in on what the kids want. Now if it was up to me, the only pixar film that deserves a sequel (minus toy story) is the incredibles.
  • Amy
It's about the kids. Period. It's not an adult movie or for adults who think they are still kids. The kids love it and that is what counts.
  • Andy
I just saw Cars for the first time about two months ago and it was the first Pixar film I frankly hated. A sequel is another step towards mediocrity for Pixar. Maybe they can help out with Shrek 7...I bet they can render a green fart gas way better than Dreamworks!

People seem to think John Lasseter is an unfathomable genius because one day he said 'I liked Toys when I was little'...then on another day he said 'I liked Cars when I was little'. These ideas are about as profound as when Tom Hanks went into the concept meeting in 'Big' and said "bugs". Gimme a break. Brad Bird is the genius over there. When Lasseter was trying to decide what the tramp stamp on the back of the Porsche in 'Cars' was going to look like, Brad Bird was making me try not to tear up seeing 'The Iron Giant'. Feh.

More proof that this unholy Disney alliance is truly a disgusting thing.
  • chris
people like you with your overly dramatic diagnosis of a kids movie are the reason why this world has come to what it is...its a good thing your opinion means absolutly nothing in the movie industry or everyone would be stuck watching movies like Lost in Translation...
  • Andy
It's interesting to think that my opinions have made the world 'come to' what it is...I wouldn't agree really. But it's sort of contradictory to then say my opinions don't matter in the next sentence.

My point really is that I prefer to think that movies can be more than just something to keep you from having to interact with your kids and sell crap at the K-Mart. A great movie is something that can stay with a kid for his/her whole life. And on the scale of those great movies, Cars eats it...especially compared with the usually outstanding Pixar movies. 'Wall-E' and 'The Incredibles' being perfect examples.

Nope, my opinion doesn't mean anything within the movie industry. But, I'm free to have it, and my opinion was that Cars was a base, lowbrow, and cliche piece of shit made to sell cereal and flip-flops shaped like cars. Then again, I'm not in the 'nascar/larry the cable guy/Walmart/cheese whiz/Budweiser' demographic. And the long comments list here shows that 'Cars' does have it's audience.
  • Jake
I agree that The Incredibles was a fantastic movie. Can't stand Wall-E. And cars, be it strange in its own way, is my son's favorite show to date and therefore I like it.

These shows weren't really meant for an adult audience, so really this show is being waaaay to overanalyzed. I can't stand Elmo either but my son likes it and that's what really counts here I suppose.
  • jenny
ok so cars is great its about the open road and all the experiences you have on it and its just a feel good movie especially for the kids no matter what anyones opinion is its a great movie
  • lizzyt
there is no need to be so analytical about a kids movie. if you want something with deeper meaning, maybe you should watch something that isnt animated and made with children as their target audience. as a mother of two young sons, i can assure you that the cars movie was a financial success for pixar, and why wouldnt they want to continue that? i like the cars movie because i love the smiles it puts on my sons faces. would i choose it on date night with my husband? no, there are so many other adult movies id like to watch. maybe you should try one of those to pick apart.
  • Jerry B Good
Maybe they are making the sequel to try and right all of the wrongs they made in the first film.

If I made a film with characters that I genuinely loved and saw that the finished product didn't match my expectations, I would like and take another shot to get it right.
  • Michael
Yeah, you guys are being too hard on Cars. It's the worst Pixar film yet, yes, but it's still pretty good in comparison to everything else all the other studios typically offer. If the sequel can surpass the original and validate the original's existence, I'm all for it. I'm more than willing to give Pixar a second chance.
  • Lord Toast Butter
WoW, I never knew of so many Cars Haters. Though I did not think it's Pixars best film I still think it's heads over other competing studios work. Not to mention that my son loves this film as do a lot of other kids. Why not make what the kids want???
  • Si&BrosMom
I completely disagree with most of your comments. What makes "Cars" the worst Pixar movie ever? What are you building that opinion off of?

Maybe the 12-15yr old age group think the movie is lame but most of the kids and parents the movie was actually made for think it was fantastic. First of all, talking cars, HELLO - fun. Plus the relationships that are built throughout the movie are certainly an example that you should not judge people or places as they appear at first. I' ll spare you all from the rest of the planned rant but come on - the movie was great on all levels.
  • D chase
I agree with si&, cars is a great movie in all levels . I cant wait till cars2;World Grand Prix comes out on june, 24,2011.
  • AJ
I think it's them trying to redeem themselves somewhat. However, this idea does sound good.
  • Justin
I didn't think Cars was bad at all. Sure, it's probably the worst of their films, but everything is relative. It's still better than just about anything Dreamworks or anybody else has come up with.

By the way, it's no coincidence that a MASSIVE (like $200 million massive) Cars attraction will be opening the same year at Disney's California Adventure.
  • Shawn
Wow, shocked so many here didn't like it. Obviously there are lots of people that did like it or they wouldn't make #2. I personally loved Cars and I think Wall-E isn't nearly as good as Incredibles, Cars, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc and Toy Story 1 and 2.

Ratatouille and Wall-E were lower on my favs by Pixar and I am skeptical about UP, their next film. I am really excited about Car 2. Though I would be more excited about news of an The Incredibles 2 film. Also excited for Toy Story 3.
  • Andy
Sure, 'Cars' is better than things like 'Shrek', but that's like saying that a piece of bologna is better than the fresh turd my dog dropped in the yard this morning. Not comparing two of the same things. You get to expect more from Pixar. They're held to a different standard...and in that standard, 'Cars' is a base, weak, cliche outing for them.

While I'm here, let me hate on 'Shrek' for a while. Do you remember watching Bugs Bunny cartoons as a kid, and every once in a while they would have those ones that trotted out the 'stars' of the day? You'd sit there puzzled wondering who the guy with the giant ears was, or who the short guy who talked funny was. Years later you'd realize they must have been making fun of James Cagney...maybe...I guess. But in the end you were essentially bored and waiting for the next one to start because it might be one of those funny 'The House of Tomorrow' cartoons. That's what 'Shrek' movies are. In forty years no one will even understand why Shrek is going 'woof woof woof' because Arsenio Hall will be deader than he is now, and it wasn't funny in the first place. No one will be amused by references to the 'Macerana' because it will be in the trash and forgotten, as it deserves.
Pixar movies strive to be timeless, and that's why they're held to a different ruler.
  • Andy
    Here's a perfect example...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbWteZRBiwM

Go to 3:50 and see the cavalcade of people you maybe can sort of identify ...except the second guy ...and the fourth guy. At any rate, isn't that HILARIOUS! Mmmhm.
  • dtm
Area you all serious? Have any of you seen Ratatouille? Cars was twice the movie. The first time I saw it I was very pleased with the witty humor and the general plot line. I've seen it many times since, and it doesn't wear out. I will gladly await the sequel, which I'm sure will be much better than the sequel to toy story...did they really need to make a whole movie that line after line from star wars just for laughs? It got really old.
  • PJ
I didn't have any desire to watch Cars when it came out, but when I finally did I really enjoyed it. It was more of a children's film than any of the other Pixar cross-generational content, and if you go in expecting a Wall-E or Toy Story then it will disappoint. Personally I disliked Ratatouille. It was solid, but didn't have any of that Pixar magic for me, and that was trying hard. Cars isn't the weakest of their output for me, by that logic. I'd watch a sequel. More importantly, I'd take kids to the sequel - and they'd have a blast. Not everything is made for you.
  • JAW
Ok, so everyone is entitled to their own opinion....that's what makes this country great. Since that is the case, allow me to throw in my two cents. I LOVED Cars! It could be because I have small children, or that my husband and I are both car enthusiasts and get a kick out of talking cars. I don't know which is the reason, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also loved Ratatouille and Toy Story 1. However, Toy Story 2......ehhhh, not so much. The Incredibles....I bought it on DVD just so my daughter would shut up about it, and it doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I may chuckle, but feel sick after seeing it. Finding Nemo.....AMAZING!!!!!
Back to the Cars article though...I really think that it's a stretch to make a sequel. I'll watch it and I'll probably enjoy it, but really? Why so many sequels to movies that don't need them? Cars was enjoyable the first time around. Please don't ruin it for me!
  • Cars and Ratatouille were bay far the most mediocre of Pixar's work so far, so making a cars sequel doesn't make much sense. I'd rather see a Bug's Life sequel than Cars, and Bug's life wasn't all that great eaither. My son really likes playing with his toy Lightening McQueen, but he gets bored watching the movie. But he's glued to the TV when we turn on The Incredibles. Any word on that sequel?
  • mullins
GUYS..GUYS...IT'S NOT IF YOU LIKED THE MOVIE CARS OR IF YOUR AUNT PATTY LIKED THE MOVIE, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS. FOR GOD SAKE PEOPLE, IT'S A CCAARRRRTTOOOONN. I HAVE THREE KIDS FROM THE AGES OF 13 DOWN TO 3, AND THEY ABSOLUTLY LOVE THE MOVIE CARS. THEY CAN'T WAIT FOR SUMMER 2011. THEY LOVED IT SO MUCH, I HAD TO SPEND 6,000 DOLLARS LAST SUMMER TO TAKE THEM TO DISNEYLAND TO SEE McQUEEN AND MATER. THEY DID, AND IT MADE THEIR LIFE. YOU GO DISNEY, GREAT WORK PIXAR. GET IT HERE IN SUMMER 09 IF POSSIBLE.
  • Blind Army
If you really need to wonder why they're making a sequel to Cars, go to Wal-Mart or Toys-R-Us and check out how much merchandise is available for sale. Now, after you have seen everything available on the 3 aisles exclusively devoted to it, go find out how much merchandise is available for Toy Story, The Incredibles, Bug's Life, Ratatouille, Wall-E, etc. etc. etc. Yeah, that's right...HARDLY ANY in comparison. Aside from that, Cars is the one film I can easily put in the DVD player and let my almost 3 year old son watch. True, Cars isn't Pixar's best outing (which is still The Incredibles), but it's definitely the most kid friendly -as evidenced by the fact there's still LOTS of toys available for sale. And I know in the past Pixar had said they're not in the sequel business, but they're partnered with the one company that actually knows how to remove blood from a stone. Guaranteed Disney saw the amount of merchandising money they were reaping off of Cars and they went back to Pixar and said "You WILL make this sequel, and you WILL make it sooner rather than later."
  • Hal05154
Ah, the hell with all of you. It had Paul Newman, Richard Petty, and the late, great George Carlin in it. It was frickn' great. Y'all have corn cobs up your butts.
  • isotonic
Not only did Cars have a generic and predictable storyline, it was lifted wholesale from Doc Hollywood. I couldn't believe how blatant it was.

A young hotshot is on his way across country to the west coast to start a big-bucks career. He crashes in a hick town and destroys public property. The local judge makes him stay around and work off the damage. He feels superior to the local hicks at first, who are kooky but endearing. He meets a chick and learns to slow down and appreciate life in the slow lane.

Also, Mater was excruciating and to watch him goofing around Europe and those crazy Europeans would be painful.

I'll have a stab at a storyline. A reversal of Cars. Mater and Speed travelling through Europe. They get stuck somewhere. All of the Euro-snobs think mater is a stupid hick. He meets a girl and saves the day with his winch. They all learn that although some people are different, we shouldn't be so quick to judge. The End.
  • jbelkin
Damn, you guys are cynical ... oh yea, and Doc Hollywood was the first film where a city slicker is a fish out of water in a hick town ... maybe you ought to start watching films from a few years before the 1980's? CARS was great. It deserves a sequel just like TS ... if you're too grown up to enjoy CARS, yea, whatever - go back to movies like SAW.
  • Natasha
I honestly believe if you are an adult and you are commenting on this movie get a life. This movie is loved by kids all over the world. Its a fantastic movie and honestly it was nice that Disney made a BOY themed movie instead of all these princess movies. I love it and my son loves it. Honestly who gives a crap what the adults think, if my kids love it I am the one going to be buying them all the merchandise from the film. You would think all these so call adults out there would have better things to do than comment on movies made for children..........
  • hud
Dude! Why are all of you hating on Cars? Who cares if it wasn't funny enough for you adults that somehow depend on cartoons for your entertainment. Our children LOVE Cars. Isn't that who's supposed to make the decesion if it's a good cartoon or not? Get out of your mom's basement and get a life!
  • Cant believe how many people disliked Ratatouille. It is the my fave of the lot.
I agree with some of the other people when they said Cars was not the best film they have made but better than most other companies.
I also think this sequel may fix the wrongs with a stronger storyline.
So i look forward to everything they produce
  • oh and adults commenting on this movie are most likely animators or fans of the animation world not wall-e humans in a basement :D
  • Kaysey
I am 25 years old with a 4 year old son and we both love CARS so much we watch it everyday..My son has everything with CARS on it he looooves Lighting McQueen and Mater thats his favorites. Anyone who said this wasnt a good movie doesn't know what they are talking about b.c this is one of my favorite Pixar movies. I would much rather watch CARS over SHREK or RATATOUILLE. Im very very excited they are making a part 2 I just wish it was coming out sooner.
  • kabbo
do any of you have children? because if you have young boys then you should all know that the Cars film is the greatest. not only did my boys love it I though it was really cute as well, and all of the attention to detail is amazing. i cant wait for the next one
  • I am Speed
I am thrilled they are coming out with a sequel!! Almost every child around the age of 3-5 as well as Mommy and Daddy are looking forward to the next one!
  • jenny
I love cars i think it was so much better than the incredibles and monsters inc, Roll on cars 2!
  • David Loosmore
I think it's great that so many people with kids see Cars for the film it really is. Sure it might not have been the box-office monster of nemo and perhaps people expected more racing 'action'. But for me and my two kids (aged 7 and 3) this is the film that has been played the most in our house ever. No joking, because of the kids I've seen this film over 80 times..and...it never fails to entertain me. I won't go into the detail of why it's so good but I know there aren't more than a handful of films (from any studio, live action of animation) that I could stand watching more than 5 times - let alone 80. Cars is the best pixar movie hands down (with TS2 and the incredibles following behind). Roll-on cars2. I can't wait.
