Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in TinTin?

Simon Pegg revealed in The Sunday Times that Steven Spielberg suggested/asked that him and Nick Frost play the Thompson Twins in Tintin. Spielberg requested that Pegg meet him on the mocap set:

“Steven’s smoking a stogy, cap on head, like he’s always been since I was a baby,” Pegg says, shaking his head in wonder. “I shook his hand and chatted about films. He gave me the mo-cap [motion-capture] camera, and I had a play around with it. Then he said, ‘Hey, maybe you and Nick Frost could play the Thompson Twins.’ In Tintin. A Spielberg movie. To work with him is beyond .. . ” He trails off, lost for words.

The Shaun of the Dead stars are also good friends with Tintin co-director Peter Jackson, who had a cameo in Hot Fuzz. Like most Americans, I haven’t read the Adventures of Tintin, but it seems like Pegg and Frost would make a perfect fit as the Thompson Twins.

Universal Pictures pulled out of the project last week, which resulted in Paramount stepping forward to fund the film entirely. Thanks to /Film reader Simon D for the tip.

tintin? how is this racist crap relevant to today's youth?
  • spikeshinizle
    Two words: HELL YES!
  • orange cinema
all i can focus on with the wright/pegg/frost trio, is their upcoming 'the world's end' film. i can only imagine how the blood & ice-cream trilogy will end, and being obsessed with the apocalyptic genre made me too f-ing happy to hear that this would be the backdrop. every side project announced makes it feel like the project keeps getting pushed further back, but it'll be worth the wait.

as for tin tin, i know it'll be a DVD for me, but more power to them for working with speilberg.
  • Agent J
    Three words: Oh Hell Yeah!
  • i've read quite a bit of those. if not all, honestly. and with all due respect, as good as a couple those two might be. they wouldn't. they are obviously not twins, look at them.

The Thompson twins are suppose to act tongue-in-cheek, so I guess this could be a nice match up. I'm sure there might be better but work with what you got.

Peter, how can you think it's a good match up if you've never read it?
  • Soulprint
seven words: Holy fuck shit yes awesome sex candy!
  • WTF Duval? Tintin is in no way racist crap! That Tintin in Congo shit is all played out, don't you realize the book was written in 1930? That was the mentality back then!

My only problem with this film is that Spielberg seems to be hiring only British actors...doesn't he realize that Tintin is a Belgian creation that should be made in French?
  • Jack Donaghy
    Seven words:

No one gives a shit about Spielberg.
  • Mario
I think Pegg would be a great TinTin, he even looks like him
  • Christopher Marc
    @Peter

I didn't read the comics but I did grow up on the cartoon in the 90s, it's basically everything that makes Indiana Jones special...even with the magic and supernatural artifacts....Spielberg/Lucas basically ripped off Tintin, I find it hard to believe neither had heard about the massively popular comic...I don't know if you can find the cartoon in a DVD store but it was really impressive, some better than a few of the Jones installments....I'm slightly confused why they aren't making it live-action but I think the adventures might be too large and expensive to shoot on camera
  • @ Christopher Marc

Of course Spielberg has known about Tintin for a long time, he's been trying to make this movie since 1981! In fact, he discovered the books when a review compared Raiders to Tintin. So yes, the Indiana Jones films are basically a mix of James Bond and Tintin.
  • Jeremy M
Growing up on the Tintin books, I remember the Thompson Twins being a little more identical to each other than what Frost and Pegg look like.

Eight Words: I WILL WAIT FOR NETFLIX FOR THIS ONE!!!!

    @ Jack Donaghy

I'm starting to agree because of nine words: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
  • Oi Vey
Wait, I don't recall Paramount paying the film in full, unless I missed it. and what's up with Duvall?

It's like saying "Let's not make a Johnny Quest movie because kids don't know it now and it features an Indian stereotype (in which Hogi was not)."
  • Dr. Ballon
    @Mr Hollywood

Don't you know that people of any nationality other than American sound British when they speak English?

Also, 10 words: I want to see this movie already, purple monkey dishwasher.
  • oh my god. everything they touch is smart. see, this is what we need: some fucking Normal people who are funny, are privy to cool shit, and know whats good for them and what isnt. i hope they do this. what am i saying, of course theyll be in this movie. theyre smart, aint they? work with spielberg? FUCK YEAH!
  • BTW, Tintin FTW, the Comics and the Cartoons.

    BLISTERING BARNACLES!!
  • Guerlot
    hum...

I was a big Tintin fan as a kid
I'm a big fan of Frost & Pegg

While, they would fit big time in the roles mentally, as 2 dumb brothers totally goof,

Physically, they are not a match at all.

The Thompson Twins are Identical (except for the mustache)

    Not sure honestly
  • As for the concerns that the twins are suposed to be identicle, it should be noted that the film is being made by the same performance capture technology used on beowulf. So while Pegg and Frost look very different in real life, they could look identical in the film
  • If there are two names that could get me excited about a project I had no interest in before, it's Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
  • IK
It would still be cumbersome to mocap one big man and one small one and try to match them up.
  • MosesMonster
    @ Peter Sciretta

It's their voice too, Nick and Simon sound way to different to pull of twins though.
  • Rocket
I'm with Peter, its been done with mocap so if they can make Ray Winstone look more ripped than Rambo then I'm pretty sure they can make Frost and Pegg look alike plus the Characters don't have to look like them for them to animate and voice them; just look at all of Andy Serkis's work with Kong and Gollem.
  • Jon
Frost would be a great Thompson twin, but not Pegg. Pegg is much better suited for TinTin, the lead roll.
  • 790
The Thompson Twins, later reformed into the band, Babble........ ;-)
  • loz
If I'm not mistaken 'Tin, Tin',was first a cartoon strip
in the 40's; and a very powerful apolitical piece of
propaganda work.Back then, it was unprecedented
that a medium aimed supposedly at kids should
portray people of colour (Black and Asian) in such polarised, stereotypical ways.
At large,it chronicled middle eastern politics
    and highlighted
    the differences between the two cultures;
    with westerners always suffering gross
    miscarriages of justice.
I wonder why? American foreign policies, anyone!
That said, when I was younger liked watching them.
When your young; your just young! I guess,
I was besotted by sense of adventure. Edgy, too.
  • @ Mr. Ballon

Yes, I know Hollywood always portrays non-American people as having a British accent (see Valkyrie trailer minus Tom Cruise), but what I was actually saying is that Spielberg & Jackson should make the movie originally in French, then release two versions in the US, one dubbed (the main one) and one subtitled (limited release) to please true fans and respect the comic's Belgian origin.

PS: Thomson and Thompson aren't actually twins, that's part of the joke...they're exactly alike (except for their mustache), but they're not related. Kind of like Babs and Buster bunny from those Tiny Toon cartoons.
  • loz
Don't laugh, now! but shouldn't Michael Jackson be a candidate to play the role of Tin,Tin?
He has a similiar high pitched voice required.
  • @ Loz

Once again, there are no shocking elements of racism and propaganda in the Tintin strip. Tintin originated in 1930, and thus early adventures reflect the mentalities of the era.

People of colour are often portrayed in a positive light, be they Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, South American, Arab etc...

As for bad guys sometimes being people of colour? This is like saying James Bond is racist because the bad guy in Die Another Day was Korean, sheesh... FYI, the main recurring villain, Tintin's Lex Luthor if you will, is a very white Greek American.
  • Eli
Why is everyone always paying so much attention to this 'stereotypical' and 'racist' crap? I watched Tintin as a cartoon as a kid and I loved it. I loved the bad guys, I loved Tintin, I loved Cpt. Haddock and I loved the Professor, even the butler was awesome.

As far as I could see there was nothing racist in the motion carton adaptions of all the comic books except for the first two.

I also watched the whole series again on DVD recently with my brothers, who are 19, 16 and myself being 17, and we still loved it.

It's a great cartoon, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie progresses.

regarding "duval" and his original racist remark (the first comment): The Tintin comic series did have "goofy looking" representations of Africans in Herge's comic Tintin Au Congo which was protested in several countries. HOWEVER - despite that 1 of 25 (plus) comics - all others are well respected award winners, not to mention the Dali Lama giving the Light of Truth award to Herge in 2006 for the comic series (which should validate Tintin to some degree).

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost: everyone seems to forget what hollywood is capable of. Simon Pegg could gain a few pounds, nick frost could lose some... slap a huge mustache on both of them - and there you have it. Thompson Twins. Anyway, heaven forbid they look slightly different - it's a "theatric representation".

As for Spielberg... he just better not botch this one up.
