The Sims Movie Explained

When I heard they were making a big screen adaptation of Will Wright’s The Sims, I wondered how they planned on creating a narrative out of a game which has no narrative. In the game you basically are god and control human characters, and create their home/world. Turns out the film adaptation will be more about you playing the game then the game itself. Producer John Davis explains the “Weird Science”-like idea to Collider:

“The Sims, as you know, you can control your imaginary world, right? And our movie, a young man, a 16 year old kid of a 14 year old kid and his friend get their hands on this thing called the Sims Infinity Pack, right, which kind of this very strange video game store which was there just for that moment, and seemingly wasn’t all that. But what they realize is that they can scan their world in, because this is the most life like, real Sims game ever. And as they are playing this they are all of a sudden realizing is what they are playing on the game is having an effect on the real world. So in effect, through the game, they are able to control their world. It’s wish fulfillment, and obviously it turns against them.”

I’m still not sure what to think of a Sims movie, but now that it has a Twilight Zone type of spin to it, I’m a little more interested.

Discuss: Now that you’ve heard the pitch for The Sims movie, would you watch it?

  • Agent J
Shell Yeah! I'd watch this mofo. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!! SIMS 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!! $_$ I see money signs for this franchise.
  • I always like to think that you could make a good movie about absolutely anyhing. Even a piece of shit. Yes, with a good script you could make an interesting movie about shit.
  • kjell
    lame!
  • Uwe Boll has lowered my expectations on all games video game related. So by default this movie will do worlds better than I can ever hope for because of my lowered standards.
  • Rory
I agree, with you Graham, where is the pacman movie?

I reckon the sims movie sounds gay, and wonder why they have to call it the sims movie, when its just a concept similar to it...

Its the same as Stranger Than Fiction...

    "Would you watch it?"
    No.

Cashing in on a half ass video game, with a retarded movie (not even full retard;). Between rentals and movie channels it will will still profit, enabling the shitty movie cycle to continue.

It's a sad thing when you can tell how crappy the writing is when the plot pitch contains a cliche as overused as 'mysterious "fill-in-the-blank" shop that isn't there when you go back'.

What kind of sad writer uses that one?
  • Brendt
Are you kidding?!?! This movie is going to be a must-see!!! They're going to portray "a 16 year old kid of a 14 year old kid". Even the most far-out fantasy movie has never attempted to show someone who has a child that is older than them.
  • Joel
This sounds like "Jumanji 2008" just instead of having jungle animals they'll just have people who end up in a room that's on fire with no doors and they'll inexplicably have to pee.

Actually maybe I would see that
  • J.D.
So by playing the game, they are controlling their world.... Uh, why don't they "control their world" the normal way, and not go through the game?
  • I think the IDEA is a good one, but it's one of those that if not handled right, it'll be hokey. And with the "store that wasn't really there" plot point, it already is :(
  • Jerry B Good
Didn't adam Sandler do this already with Click?
  • I think Hollywood is run by total morons. My dog has better ideas than this.
  • Reggie
It's like The Wizard all over again.....only the entire movie is focused around the game.
  • Reggie
    And there's no power glove.
  • Steve
Oh, Hollywood!! You know how to pick the blockbusters!!
  • This is being written by comic scribe Brian Lynch, who is responsible for "Angel: After the Fall" and "Everybody's Dead," so it should be pretty inventive.
  • Tan
I can almost hear the studio executives rubbing their hands together in what they think will be a critical blockbuster.
  • Rachel Summers
    @Brendt
LOL my sentiments exactly. Probably one of the worst paragraphs I've ever read.
  • South Texas Terror
upon hearing this, my sim just hung itself
