Avi Arad Options Mass Effect

Avi Arad has optioned the movie rights to Bioware’s sci-fi action role playing game Mass Effect.

In the game you play as an elite human soldier named Commander Shepard, who sets out to explore the Galaxy in the year 2183. Thirty-five years prior, humans discovered a technology built by an extinct alien race which has allowed them to break free of the solar system. But the galaxy is trapped in an endless cycle of extinction. Every 50,000 years, an ancient machine race invades the galaxy and wipes out all advanced organic civilizations.

The term Mass Effect, is described as “a newly discovered physics phenomenon that has properties along the lines of other physics forces such as gravity and electromagnetism.” In the game, certain creatures can manipulate the mass effect, much like electric eels can make use of electromagnetism. Humans can also get these abilities through prosthetics.

Avi Arad is best known as the producer of the Spider-Man films and Iron Man, but many forget that he was involved with some Marvel’s unspectacular film projects like Hulk, Elektra, Punisher, Fantastic Four, and Ghost Rider. Arad also produced the Bratz movie, Man-Thing, the upcoming Punisher: War Zone and a film based on the toy robot Robosapien. So I’m not convinced that the project is in the right hands with Arad. It all depends on which director is hired to bring the game to the big screen.

Bioware has said that the game is the first part of a trilogy, which gives a potential film adaptation franchise possibilities. I’ve never played the game as I have a strong affliction for role playing games, but the concept certainly sounds like it could be made into a fun sci-fi film. To give you a better idea of what the game is like, watch the game’s trailer below:

  • One of my favorite games to come out in recent years. I hope they don't screw up the movie.
  • Andrew
Mass Effect is a kick ass game. And has a lot of potential to become an awesome movie.
  • Iron Matt
Don't be fooled by the trailer's simplistic and cliched view of the story. The game has an intricately detailed plot and universe that rivals even the best Sci-Fi films.

Make this happen, and make it not suck!
  • Rex
Definitely potential there allright but... Mass Effect is a trilogy and it takes many years to make a game like that.

How would the movie broach the entire plot or would it follow with sequels like the game. Movie sequels would be finished a lot faster than Mass Effect 3 would be too.

There is a pretty good prequel novel though that would be a decent flick too.
  • If they approach this with the same care and wonder that was given to the original Star Wars trilogy, this could be a really exciting franchise.
  • Nish
I suppose that in many games, the storyline is being given more attention so a lot of them feel like films. I loved Mass Effect and think the storyline is fantastic and with the right actor to be shepard (RDJ?) and a good dirtector, it'll be great. However, they'll have to lose some of the sub-plots and a few characters. Garus can go as can the asari girl as I guess they'll keep the human-human love interest!
  • Ghost
This is an amazing game, one of the best in a few years. I don't care too much for a film I rather live the games and choose what I want to do but it's still an interesting choice.

I actually just beat this game two days ago! I loved it! Then end was incredibly epic. Its great that its being optioned for an adaptation, however, I'm not too sure about Arad either. Other than that, I'm excited!
  • Captain Awesome
Mass Effect is excellent. Avid Arad as usual plopping his giant ass on another property until a studio picks it up.
  • 790
    Never liked role playing games.
Once I found out this was one I stayed far away.......
  • Pat
Honestly, I'm actually excited with this one... They better keep in the John Carpenter-esque music from the game, that was the best!

im really sorry for what happened , please some mod could fix that ?

    790,

That's a bummer. Because there are some great, even epic RPG's out there, especially for their stories, combat design, and overall world creation. Everyone's game diet should consist of some sort of RPG.

I can't fathom someone steering clear from that gigantic genre entirely.
  • does it matter
Why do I feel so awkward reading Retroqqq's post.

and Awesome, a lot of people dislike RPGS. Mostly because of the reading...

then again, those are missing out on FF series, Oblivion, Fallout, and more..
  • 790
Well Cap, I tried the Star Wars RPG Game, KOTOR,,, and absolutly hated it.
I'm not a fan of gameplay stopping every 5 seconds so I can make a choice or talk to a character.
I remember taking KOTOR, and exchangeing it the next day.

I prefer First & third Person shooters. :)
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    Awesome.

When are they going to do the Halo trilogy?
    That would be freaking sweet!
  • Bill
sorry to go off topic here, but no story on how spielberg's tintin got canned?
  • D
I am also of the group that does not care for RPGs. However that's mostly due to Turn-based combat. Mass Effect I loved, because it's all the epicness of a standard RPG, and the combat plays like Gears (of War) almost.

However, 790, if you did not care for KOTOR, I wouldn't recommend Mass Effect. Same creators, same game feel. Too chatty for an action game fan.
  • 790
    Yeah thanks D,,,
I'm actually waiting for Gears of War 2,,, its due out in a few weeks!!!
  • beakmans balls
Tin tin got canned. I like that, slashfilm should steal it.
  • Iron Matt
    @790

You should at least try Mass Effect. It's basically a third person shooter with the story of an RPG.
  • 790
    Thanks Iron Mike,,,,
I will give it a chance when it drops down in price.
  • 790
    Opps. Sorry Iron Matt,,, ;-)
  • Justin
Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic are two of my favorite games of all time. Mass Effect was definitely one of my favorites last year (The other two being Halo 3 and Bioshock).

Just don't let a shitty director (like Len Wiseman -_-) fuck it up.
  • South Texas Terror
I didnt care for Mass Effect. Too much dialogue and waiting for action. When the action did come it wasnt worth the wait.

am i the only person disturbbed by the idea that video games are being tapped as great resource material for sci-fi films, when there are libraries full of classic science fiction novels and stories that have never been tapped?

I'm not saying that Biodome won't be a good starting point for a film script. I'm just saying that there options out there that deserve the same treatment.

Actually, I don't know what I'm saying. I just feel like ranting. beer me.
  • VegaBro
Keith David is the fucking man!
  • 790
There's a lot of reasons why, a lot of the video games are controlled by companies that are owned, one way or another by bigger companies that also own the studios.... They don't have to pay authors or split percentages with copywrite owners.

Beer you and me too !!! ;-)
  • Fir3Wolf
The game is a movie just with more interation. I think it could be a great movie for ppl who didn't play the game and heck I would see it.
  • WillTheSecond
I almost feel there is no point in making this into a film, playing the game is so epic and filmic anyway that it would just feel a shame not being able to control the action bits. It really did combine the best bits of movies and the best bits of games into a single awesome package.

However, if instead of making a movie that is an adaptation they make one which continues the franchise (set it before or after the trilogy of games?) I would be happy, since there are the novels too.
  • Lance Y.
    That. Jeep. Was. Badass.

    790-
That makes too much sense. dangit. Oh well, they can always remake all the classics.
  • 790
@Gocitizen, lol, yeah well you can see why they like to make remakes, (same reasons).....here's some additional info.

These Big 6 all go along with, and are supprted by the MPAA. (The ratings cabal).
  • holton
great game but the game plays like a movie, with choices. So a movie would take out the coolest part of the game which is the choice and free will. Sooo it will suck inevitably like every video game movie
  • holton
that and teh plot is pretty similar to 5th element and borrows a lot from it and other sci fi movies.
  • I loved the game so much I bought the Commander Shepard statue @ www.highdome.com
  • 790
    Thank you Holton,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    That's the reason right there!
    You nailed it. The freedom,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Exactly.
    Mass Effect / no....
  • 790
That suit the alien is wearing on the cover reminds me of the cloners on Kamino, in "Attack of the Clones".
  • Anatoly
I want to help production script. Mass Effect - must be potential better film.
  • I really liked part one. I am so anxious for part two and I am so sure part three will be great as well. I hope to see more details on part 2 and 3 soon.
