Key words: “…and direct.” We’ve known for more than a year that Seth Rogen wanted Stephen Chow to co-star as Kato in The Green Hornet, a role previously made famous by Bruce Lee, and today the casting was confirmed. What’s surprising is that Chow, who’s had considerable international success as a director with Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle and CJ7, will also helm the feature from a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, marking his American debut. Given Chow’s penchant for cartoonish, slapstick live-action and martial arts, I’m not sure what to think of the choice. Then again, Slashfilm has questioned the commercial prospects and creative potential of this project ever since Kevin Smith abandoned it and Rogen hopped on. From a press release today from Columbia Pictures via Superhero Hype

“I’m excited to be taking on The Green Hornet–obviously, I’ve been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee’s shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true.” - Stephen Chow

“The material is a perfect match for his sensibilities–Stephen in the director’s chair is the best thing for the film.” - Producer Neil Moritz (I Am Legend, Click)

“Stephen was always my and Evan’s first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we’re not the Wachowski Brothers.” - Seth Rogen

Chow has a considerable fanboy following in the States, so the choice should earn insta-cool cachet online similar to the hiring of David Gordon Green for Pineapple Express. I’m curious to know what our readers think. Similar to PE, Rogen has described the film as having “very intense action,” with much of the comedy bouncing off the dynamic between Green Hornet—a bored playboy who decides to fight crime in a party mask—and his kung fu-abled driver, Kato. Opening Summer 2010, three weeks after Marvel Studios’ Thor and one week before Toy Story 3, I can’t help but shake memories of The Shadow, another hero that originated in ’30s radio serials and wasn’t a household name at film’s release and paid for it. But I do grasp the hazy retro-Hollywood charm of the characters—I’d love to see this material done in the fashion of The Long Goodbye—and the freedom-from-scorn in reinventing them. All in all, you have to admire Rogen’s eye for hip collaboration.

Discuss: Stephen Chow directing Seth Rogen in The Green Hornet. After Pineapple Express, is Seth Rogen a viable action-comedy star? He’s already dropping the pounds.

  • Graham
all sounds great rogen has all ready started to work out for the part and was looking slimmer when he was promoting pineapple express.
  • Domino
I was honestly really upset to hear Rogen get involved with this, having Chow attached definitely piques my interest
  • Domino
Viable as ACTION-comedy star is still questionable
  • Deck Mackenzie
Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet? Let's get Jack Black to play Batman next.
  • Cool!!
  • Stephan Chow is going to make a good Kato!!
Seth Rogen as Green Hornet?? That's different!! I wonder how that's going to be like?
  • orange cinema
this suddenly just became legit. as long as they don't turn in a typical formula based superhero film!!! they need to let chow run a little, and give us something, new/different. this could be badass.

it'd really be great if it was approached the same way as some of chow's other films, and not an american/hollywood/studio film. we could really get something original.
  • Steelo
far cry from Bruce, but that gives a solid vision. Props.
  • dave
Rogen is like the Hannah Montana of films... He's everywhere!!!
  • crux

    SWEEEEEEEEET!
  • Ghost
Stil not into the fact that that not only Rogen is playing the lead but what the film might turn out to be. I'm awaiting to be surprised still.
  • Dr.Doc
all you Rogen haters are wrong! he is an excellent choice to play The Green Hornet! everyone hated the idea of Michael Keaton, a mostly comedic actor at the time, playing Batman at first too. then he turned in an incredible performance! all you suckas are wrong about Rogen! dead wrong!
  • I LOVE SETH ROGEN!
    AND I LOVE STEPHEN CHOW!
Your powers combined I AM THE GREEN HORNET!
  • Lenny
    So happy with this news!

Rogan will be fine, he won't really be the star in my opinion.
He'll be the comedy relief to Chows kickassedness!
I'm going to go watch Kung Fu Hustle right now.
  • Domino
@ Dr.Doc, I'm a Seth Rogen fan, my apprehension isn't about him in the role but the treatment of The Green Hornet in general. I don't like the habit of remakes for one, but think its cheap to turn everything into a parody. Some titles lend themselves to this, Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazzard, but things like this and the Will Ferrell Sherlock Holmes with a much richer history kind of rub me the wrong way. I am open and hopeful to this being well done. The Green Hornet brought us Bruce Lee and martial arts into the mainstream and maybe deserves a little better than a "From the guys that brought you Superbad" tagline.

    Thats good news.

Get rid of fucking Seth Rogen!!!

Hes a fucking joke and cant act for shit.

    Everything else is just fine...
  • CeilingCat
I'd not heard anything about this, but reading the report I went from "cool!" o reading Chow's involved, to "damn" when I saw Seth Rogan's involved too, to "oh well, no need to bother" when the comparison to Pineapple Express was made - that movie doesn't deserve ANY publicity, and should never have been released or even made. It's a waste of celuloid...
  • marz
when they say rogen will fight crime as the green hornet..um..well i hope they mean witha gun or something because..i just cant see rogen duke'n it out fist to fist with somebody.guess ive seen him in to many comedies.i am a chow fan so of course im going to see this movie.i like rogen dont get me wrong but sometimes the casting of a movie (even one witha tight script) can go horribly wrong.
  • Dr.Doc
its not gonna be a parody. Rogen has referenced films like True Lies and Die Hard in terms of supplementing the action w/ comic relief.
just give it a chance people! Rogens alredy losing weight too!
  • Rogen will alienate his fan base by touching a project he has no business touching. The Starsky and Hutch parady approach will be rejected big time. By the way I hated Starsky and Hutch- That material should have been played straight and so should the Green Hornet! I do not support this project at all as casting Rogen in the part is the biggest joke of all!
  • Yoji
Yes, i love stephen chow..I'm interested in how this will turn out.
  • I'm not a huge fan of either of these guys but to me it makes sense that Stephen Chow is involved with this. However, Rogen's involvement is something that could easily go sour. I personally didn't think Pineapple Express was that great aside from Danny McBride who was fantastic. If you take the funny bits out of that movie you'd have an action movie I wouldn't want to see. Maybe Rogen and Goldberg will knock it out of the park with an awesome fun action screenplay but until I see a trailer or something I'm on the skeptical side.
  • sari
    Seth Rogen is pretty.
  • Mikey M
Slacker character actor Rogen is the Green Hornet?
    We are all in trouble.
    Time for a diet Seth.
  • skippy
they need to move their release date. for reals. they're gonna get killed.
  • The Malcontent
If they're going for that Action/Comedy style for "Green Hornet", Chow as Kato and the Director is an inspired choice.
