One of the many things I loved about Casino Royale was the kick ass opening sequence featuring Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name”. Coupled with the film’s brutal black and white first scene, Cornell’s song helped introduce Daniel Craig’s grittier Bond to audiences with style to spare. Now we finally have a glimpse at the follow up song for Quantum of Solace, “Another Way to Die”, featuring Alicia Keys and Jack White—and honestly, I’m a bit disappointed.

It’s not a terrible song (see Madonna’s for Die Another Day for a good example of that), but it certainly doesn’t feel like anything new for the series. It seems as if it tries to do way too much, and the song ends up feeling overstuffed in the process. It could be redeemed by a virtuoso opening sequence, but even then only by so much.

Give it a listen below via imeem. Quantum of Solace opens Friday, November 14, 2008.

    Meh. Dissapointing
  • Ian
It's not that bad. It drags on a lil at times, but overall pretty sweet. The beginning is probably the shining moment.
  • orange cinema
i like it. this song feels exactly in the same vein as the cornell song, in fact it feels like the next logical step - hopefully the film does the same. but music - like film - is all up to everyone's own interpretations. i think the bridge could be shortened, or tweaked with, but overall i think it's a good kind of funky.
  • joelnstuff
I think the music is actually pretty good. I just don't think Jack White and Alicia Keys voices mix very well, it's just not very pleasing to the ears. But maybe some cool opening animation could redeem the song?
  • jimbo stewart
definitely the worst bond tune since All Time High.
  • I don't like it anywhere as much as You Know My Name. It has a real pop song feel and not a James Bond feel. If it had a more orchestral accompaniment it would be better. But true, nowhere near as bad as Die Another Day.
  • evbo
wow, this song is incredible...i love it. yet, i cant see this being a bond tune at all.
  • TheDaftPunk
The beginning is the best part, but on the whole - it's underwhelming. I loved Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name", along with Casino Royale. If the song is any reflection of the movie, I'm going to be let down.
  • It's a weird mish-mash... hodge podge...

Am I the only one who thinks this song's title would make a better title for the movie itself?? LOL
  • fanboy d
you know my name was crap

    this is far from it

    imho
  • Lee
The new Bond theme sucks hard... What the hell were they thinking? You don't follow up Chris Cornell with this crap from Alicia Keys
  • Sam1
I'm really surprised by everyone's confessed love for "You Know My Name" - that was one lame, crusty song. This song has it's problems - overstuffed is a pretty apt description - but it's got a whole lot more class than Cornell's dull riff. The horns are fantastic and it's great to hear a really cutting guitar line in a Bond song (I could do without the piano line). The lyrics are pretty fun too - it's amazing that these aren't been talked about. It's electrifying when Jack White first sings, 'Another ringer with the slick trigger finger for her majesty'.
  • andru
Needs more Jack White, less Alicia Keys (well, no Alicia Keys)

BTW, I think A View to a Kill is the best bond song, You know my name was ok.
  • Panda
I dont get why they chose alicia keys? yeah she wins awards all the time and stuff.. but have you ever met anyone that actually listens to her? I sure havnt.
You know my name is just kick-ass. Kind of a shame really. Now all they gotta rely on is a good intro-sequence to hold its weight.

You guys are all a bunch of lemmings. If he said he would prefer a mix from Burt Baccarat and Pink, you would be cool with that. Fuck the blogger and come up with your own opinions.

P.S. Chris Cornell sucks now, maybe you slept through the whole Audio Slave debacle.
  • Xerox
You guys are a bunch of lemmings. Form your own opinion. Chris Cornell sucks now, maybe you slept through the whole Audio Slave debacle but one word: terrible.

I would prefer Burt Baccarat and Pink for the opening theme.
  • Jason Lecter
extremely dissapointing.....Even if they have a good opening animation it will still be bad.....this is even worse than die another day....which idiot chose these two to sing the theme for a bond movie....i thought quantum was going to be good but now I doubt that it will be as good as Casino Royale....i just hope that daniel will deliver a solid performance like he did 2 years ago
  • Cary
Wow, that just...sucks. Completely discordant & obnoxious; I know I'll be stuffing my fingers in my ears at the theater.
  • Perry
I loved Cornell's song, and I'm a huge fan of White, but I think he would've done a better job on his own. Would've been more intense. This seems too slow and quiet at times for a Bond opening credits sequence. Not a bad song, but still...
  • Mario
I liked it... it is just that Cornell's song was really really great
  • Agreed with pretty much everyone here. I'm a big Jack White and you can feel his influence here, but Alicia Keys just seems to hold the song back, limit what he can do.
  • Devindra Hardawar
Honestly I really wanted Amy Winehouse to do a song for Quantum, too bad she fails too much at life :/
  • John Spiker
While I agree that Amy Winehouse would have done a perfect job (just so she can do it before she dies), I think that the tone is perfect for this song. I can really see this being accompanied by a cool montage at the beginning.

You guys can't stop criticizing, can't you?
  • REAL6
    That song fucking sucks!!!!!

Shit i wish they had WINEHOUSE!!!
  • Albert Brodsky
I'm a big Jack Black fan, so I'm a little biased, but I thought it was really good. I thought their vocals went together well. I'm not sure why people are baggin on this. I do agree with the person who said "View to a Kill" was the best theme song for a Bond movie. Cornell's was great tho. November can't come soon enough.

    Danial Craig=Best Bond ever

Yeah that's right. I love Connery, but thanks to the last movie I have a serious man-crush on Craig.
  • BobC
Yep, that is a Jack White song.

And that is the problem. It sounds like something Jack White would have made anyway. I think the best bond songs really push the musician to do something that is not quite them.
  • Rockme
    come back Chris Cornell !
  • felice
wait really? yous guys like the chris cornell song better? really? this song is incredible
  • Logan
This has got to be one of the worst Bond themes ever. It lacks emotion and style. There is no "punch." I will just get my seat and probably go get some popcorn, I am not sitting through this shit. Nothing will top Chris Cornell and the intro that accompanied the song."You Know my Name" is the greatest.
  • kt
Really dissapointing. It just sounds like a White Stripes song, not an original song. Also, it does not fit in with the Bond franchise! There's not WOW about it, like most other themes... I bet Amy Whinehouse (not a typo!) would have been much better, if only she kicked the habits!

    ROCKME- I agree with you!
  • Holy Shit! (Matt)
    It's too busy for me.
  • I personally thought "You Know My Name" was merely average and the only weak part of Casino Royale. This is just kind of a mess. It should be Alicia Keys OR Jack White, not both. Hopefully the movie still kicks serious butt.
  • helicopters
I think this song will seem much more appropriate when it's playing alongside some kick-ass intro nonsense on the big screen, right after a big opening action sequence of some kind.
  • ArcAngel
I like it. I think it will fit good with bond-esque intro visuals.
  • Spalding
you bunch of fannys no one cares!
  • G
Just more proof of why Jack White blows. Bring back Cornell! "You Know My Name" as light years better than this mess.

I can't believe some of you people have the gall to say this pile of rubbish is better than "You Know My Name." It's bad enough it's being called a "song."
  • ...here we are commenting on an unpolished and oddly mixed version. wait until the final release.
  • DanneK
I'm not all disappointed, cos I expected something experimental with White working on it. I think we'll get used to it, but it will take a while. :)
  • graham
not bad, should come off better within the film. view to a kill is an awesome song
  • Ender
Agreed: wait until the final release, and also remember that the opening computer-rendered sequence that will accompany it might actually make the song work a lot better.
  • Girl Fan
Wow. Really? People LIKED Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name”?!

It was the worst part about Casino Royale. Now "Nobody Does It Better" and "Live and Let Die" were by far the best Bond themes. "A View to a Kill" was okay.

I like this. It is very Bond-esque and remember the events of Casino Royale was before Bond was officially made into a double-O agent. This Bond-esque theme has a little kick of Jack White's guitar licks.... but I do agree that it drags a little bit.

    Long live GEORGE LAZENBY! XP
  • Baron Von Cheddar
Too many people clinging to their 007 nostalgia. Only the internet could foster this binary system of absolutes.
    The WORST Bond song ever?
    The BEST Bond song ever?
Its not all b&w boys, allow for some grayscale here.

Yeah, its different from what came before it. There's a lot more edge to it ... just like the new direction of the films. I think it'll fit well with the tone of the film and give some oomph to the opening sequence.
  • yh
As a song... its not bad. A bit scattered, but its got a good beat and jack black and alica keys work well together. As a bond song... the jury's still out for me. With the proper intro video it might work, but it doesn't feel epic enough for a bond intro...
  • Mikey M
They have got to be kidding. Why are they trying to appear to an Urban crowd with this song????
  • krackajap
The very best bond song imo was Surrender by K.D. Lang. It's just too bad they chose that Sheryl Crow song instead though. Bastards.

    Fanboy d,

No, I didn't know your name was crap. My condolences go out to you. Hope you gave your parents hell for that.
  • Square
Sounds like a mish-mash of random suck to me. At least the trailer still looks amazing. Maybe the intro sequence will make up for the music as well.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I couldn't even make out a melody in that thing. This is the opening sequence music or is it just a song on the soundtrack?
  • Mr. Bojangles
There is a word for this song... that word is "sucks."

They should just play the original bond theme instead of this rubbish.
  • gocitizen
I'm not sure what they are going for here. I'm a Jack White fan, but I sort of feel like he was hamstrung by havign AK tagging along for this...or something. It just seems to be a little off.

..but it's just a title sequence.

As much as I hate her, it's true that Amy Winehouse would have been perfect for this film. Bond deserves some classic nostalgia.

And anyone that believes that A View to a Kill is a great Bond theme is really missing the boat. Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger and Live and Let Die earn that honor by a mile.
