New Photos: Frank Miller’s The Spirit

/Film reader Christopher M sent over these new photos from Frank Miller’s The Spirit, which hits theaters on December 25th 2008. I’ll admit, some of these photos look really bad ass, but I’m still not convinced due to the horrible showing Lionsgate had at Comic Con. More after the jump.

Official Plot Synopsis: Adapted from the legendary comic strip, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop.

Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?

In the vein of BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY, THE SPIRIT takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

It will be interesting at the least..
  • aj
I agree with Patrick. For good or bad, it should be something different despite the visual similarity to Sin City. I'll have to wait to see it to pass judgment.
  • Can this movie possibly look any worse at this stage? (Besides turning into your average day romantic comedy, ala My Best Friend's Girl.)
  • Superman
Sin City had promise but ended up a jumbled mess. It's obvious film and comics work differently so you can't do the comic on film word for word, yet this seems to be more of that kind of thing. What a shame. I liked it better when movies were adaptations rather than exact duplicates.
  • StarBlazer101
The still where The Spirit guy is tied down and about to be chopped up for some reason reminds of The Green Hornet....
  • I had high hopes for this movie. Then I saw that infamous Comic Con "toilet" footage and now I've got to wonder, who wanted a cross between Sin City and Adam West's Batman? This could maybe on Dick Tracy level at best. Which is sad.
  • sari
Is that the dad from Wonder Years in the second picture?
  • bp
I predict this movie will be an epic fail. I love Miller's work but the trailers actually made me uninterested in it and the photos are very bland. So far the doctor's office is the only location I've even seen. Everything just has a black foggy background. Completely uninteresting. The ropes in pic 7 look terrible too, it bugs me to look at them.
  • Christopher Marc
I agree with Peter I'm hesitant about this project as well, Loinsgate's lack of an early marketing campaign started my dread....I admit the Comic-Con clip that ended up online was awful...you never know it could have been a poor choice of previewing, I'm hoping they go back to the editing room after responses

    @sari

    yes it is him

This makes me glad Sin City was black and white.
  • looks alright

    @Christopher Marc

Your typo of Lionsgate amuses me. Loinsgate? Sounds like a porn studio, heh. :-)

As for this movie, it doesn't just look like a rip-off of Sin City, but a bad rip-off. Like as if The Asylum did their take on it.
  • kingdarius
This movie is gonna be hot azz for real
  • Dexter Morgan
    Why is it always snowing?

Where does this movie take place, Newfoundland?

...actually I dont even know if it snows that much there, I just assumed it does because its Canada, and, well, from what I've seen on TV, it snows there alot.

Actually, since I know more about it, how about I say itll take place in Milwaukee in December. Yeah, it snows there about 6 months out of the year so, yeah, thats like, a lot of snow.

I'm still lukewarm about the flick, though.
  • YoungZe
Haha! You know, at my artschool we make better pictures than that and we only have training for photography for like 6 months. Embarrassing. Nothing works in these pictures. All i can think of is Batman Forever. Frank Miller please stop before it's too late. Obviously that you're better at writing.
  • Gart, Bo
    not good.
  • Dan
The reason they keep releasing stylized photos of the women of The Spirit is because that's the only thing they think will garnish pre-release buzz. So, you've got a weird "toilet" scene leak, pictures of an underwhelming superhero, and highly stylized erotic photos of the hottest women in Hollywood today...

What's next? Britney Spears on the soundtrack singing a duet with her ex?
  • ben
this movie looks so stupid. doesn't even compare to sin city. all the actors look so bad. this movie is going to blow.
  • Denny Colt
I have to disassociate myself from this project.
Since my father's death a few years ago. There had been a lot of speculation as to the faith of a movie adaption of my life.
And seeing as Mr. Miller and my father were close friends,it seemed that the project was in capable hands.
But now the footage has been leaked and the ad campaign has begun. And there's a little too much fixation on sex here, but I digress.
Frank adaption bare slight semblance to my life, but it's really not me. I had wondered weither Frank could pull himself from the Sin City mindset. And do a proper film.
But it appears that this just isn't so.
So I have to say I'm very disappointed, and wished things could have been better.
    Denny Colt,
    Somewhere in Central City
P.S. the remark "What is is with you and women?" Is a question that should put to Mr. Miller. Does he actually like them or what?

    StarBlazer101 Says:

T"he still where The Spirit guy is tied down and about to be chopped up for some reason reminds of The Green Hornet…."

Oddly enough, that's the only still that looks anything like the original comic, although the knife was a dagger, and she was apparently going to stab downward with it in the comic.

None of the rest of this junk looks anything like the comic.
  • jamie
the main problem i have with this movie is that i think it's failure will affect the chances of "sin city 2" being made/being successful financially
  • Roy
Anyone who critizes this film without seeing it has no common sense whatsoever.
  • Frank
"Anyone who critizes this film without seeing it has no common sense whatsoever."

So far, we're seeing exactly what the studio wants us to see. It doesn't look good. If these are the best pictures they want to use for publicity, then the film really doesn't have much going for it (why release BAD pictures?).
  • Christian
Geez. All these comments sound like they're coming from people who had their minds made up about the movie even before the pictures and trailers were released. You all seem deadset on hating this movie just for the sake of being negative.

From what I've seen so far, the movie looks interesting and a welcome breath of fresh air from the same bland movies we're being fed month after month. Finally! A movie that's not just another boring Oscar-chaser or another lame comedy from Apatow's camp.

Sure it's aping Sin City (it's the same director, what do you expect?!) but I'd rather have a Sin City imitator/wannabe than everything else hitting theaters these days.

It looks to me like Miller is doing a good job of blending his own style with that of the original Spirit comics.
  • Serge
Human cloning technology exist and in heavy use, in some cases against US people. Scarlett Johansson "actress" is exactly that case. Biomaterial is stolen and transform to clones meantime original person not an actress at all.
  • NatoG
I agree with christian! All you haters just go watch Dark Knight for the billionth time and all that other crap. The real fans will get to watch this movie, enjoying the fact that Miller is the guy who brought back batman from the dead (The Dark Knight Returns-graphic novel) and whose works also inspired the real BATMAN MOVIE (circa 1989)! Also staying true to the source is what makes these movies any good at all, what would you rather have? Everyone in dirtbike leather outfits?! The problem with comic-book movies is that Hollywood dilutes them down so much that they take a huge fan base following and turn it into dawson Creek! Let's go back to the basics, its about freakin time! Yet I agree not all comics should be movies, let's face Hollywood just doesn't have the balls to handle some of the best stories ever written! FRANK MILLER RULES!! AND ALL YOU 300 BANDWAGON GYPSIES NEED TO LOVE IT OR GET THE HELL OUT!!
  • Dr.Doc
this flick is gonna be alot of fun! its gonna rock! cant wait til christmas!
  • Tiff
all so many negative comments, if everyone stopped comparing and judging one picture always by others and just take it for what it is alone, you might enjoy it, i love frank miller and his style and personally dont see enough of it so i cant wait. my kind of movie.
  • Tiff
so many 'know it alls' in the world, just sit back relax and watch the film, i dont have great expectations therefore i dont have great disappointments, i just love the work these guys put into pictures for us to taste and enjoy, the work they do is incredible, when i can do better then i'll compare but until then i will just disappear into my own escapeism for 90 minutes and love it!
