xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

This past month Vin Diesel was dropping hints that he would be interested in returning for a third film in the xXx franchise. And now Variety is reporting that Sony is in talks with the star to reprise his role as Xander Cage, an extreme athlete turned government super agent. Hack director Rob Cohen is also in talks to return. To give you an idea of just how much of a bad idea this actually is…. the project has a title, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which is five words more than the current draft of the screenplay. But a screenplay isn’t important, really..

Ice Cube replaced Diesel in XXX: State of the Union, and no one noticed or cared. Apparently, Diesel wanted too much money. So either the studio has upped their offer or Diesel, who is coming off the box office bomb that was Babylon A.D., lowered his asking price. My guess is that the offer is somewhere in the lower end of the middle.

I’m actually one of the few people who believe that Diesel could be good if used right. I enjoyed his supporting performances in Boiler Room and Saving Private Ryan. But Diesel continues to take a few more steps in the wrong direction with Fast and Furious and xXx 3.

You all spend so much sucking Aronofsky/Smith/Tarentino/random pretentious hack director dick, you don't realize that the first xXx was an enjoyable movie.
  • ChampCheyne
Hated the first one, didnt bother on the second. Third will be garbage as well.
  • Michael: Thank you, greatest comment ever....
  • Agent Iron J Transformed
I dunno about that comment Michael...xD Either way I loved the first xXx and I always wondered why Vin didn't come back for the next one. I'll be watching the next xXx with Diesal back as the main guy. GO VIN DIESAL!!!
  • Am I pretty much the only person who enjoys Diesel movies? xXx, The Fast and The Furious, Pitch Black, Riddick, Babylon A.D., and the upcoming Fast and Furious (and apparently xXx) were all awesome/look awesome. Apparently I was one of the very few who appreciated Babylon A.D.. No one seems to give a shit about the modern sci-fi classic that is the Riddick series. =\
  • Why they're even making a sequel after State of the Union bombed so badly is beyond me.

    @ Michael

I believe you need to look up the definition of hack again.
  • Yorel
He is a bit like Jason Statham...He has potential but he keeps taking roles in stupid movies.

I guess I can be a bit of a movie snob, but I really liked both the first xXx and Transporter. The leads played their parts well, the girls were hot, and the action was relatively new and exciting (I love a good car chase), not to mention both having pretty kick ass soundtracks. The problem comes when studios decide they can take a name and just cheapen the movie in order to come out with a sequel. Here's a hint... the sequel as to be twice as a good as the original in order to garner the same kind of praise. Its just how it works.

Come on, he grinded a rail with a kitchen tray!

i actually enjoyed xXx, second sucked hairy monkey balls imo (too many "bad ass cliches"), but... isnt Xander Cage supposed to be dead?, i mean... wtf?
  • daniel
didn't they kill him off in the second mov...

    ahh nevermind.
  • JEff
Peter, I agree with you 100%. Diesel has acting chops, but he keeps going for the big budget roles that spend too much money on visuals and not enough on the script, and that brings Vin's credibility. Look at Pitch Black. A low-budget scifi flick that focused on characters and script, and launched Vin Diesel into the lime-light. Let's hope Vin is forced to continue to lower his asking price till he gets another script-driven role.

Michael, I enjoyed xXx up to the point that they introduced the hydrofoil into the mix, after that all hope was lost.
  • Alan Geiss
dude, they said he died in state of union, how could they bring him back?
  • @ Peter Sciretta > I don't get you man, why are you looking for a candy in a butcher's shop?
The first xXx had no complicated story, no need of great acting skills - just people who look and speak right. The idea of the movie was simply to show a world without boundaries. It was pretty much a showdown. Something you can simply enjoy watching without thinking every second about the master plot or "Why he did that? Why she doesn't want to be with him anymore? Who's the killer d... it?".

xXx2 was so bad I had nightmares for weeks! They lost me in the beginning with "Xander Cage has been killed" (and that's it with the main char. from the first movie). Come on that was soooo stupid!

I am happy Diesel is back for FF and xXx. He doesn't had to act in this movies, because the characters were like made in his image. The only mistake he made was to wait so many years to finally make them. If you make a good movie and they want another one and the fans want another one - do it, don't wait for 3-4 crappy sequels to come out so you can come back!
I strongly believe that FF4 and xXx3 will be as good as the first ones. ...and hopefully they'll finish the stories and leave them alone.
  • Steve
Yeah, that's the comment I was going to make as well... there's a throwaway line in "State of the Union" that concerns Xander Cage having been killed in Bora Bora.

Well, here's to hoping they ignore it. The first xXx was admittedly a guilty pleasure. If Diesel is back, I'm interested.
  • Mike
How do you bring someone back from the dead, don't ask why I watch the 2nd one over the weekend. It say Xander was killed in Bora Bora. The movie will have to back track and tell us why he's not dead, pls no Rob Cohen the man sucks ( I enjoyed FastFur1 and XXX1) he doesn't understand the directors chair, keep with behind the desk as a producer.
  • Iron Matt
Michael, that has got to be one of the funniest things I've read all week.
  • cib3k
The first xXx was indeed a decent popcorn flick and nothing more - nobody should be blamed for loving it or hating it.

People should stop throwing the word "pretentious" every time somebody tries to do something different or raise above mediocrity. At least these people are trying and in the worst cases their efforts end up being interesting failures.

The problem with Vin Diesel is that he got too big. He probably considers himself now an action hero and discards everything else. Also, his overacting is getting annoying - him barking at the camera is ruining even the few decent flicks he's in. He's becoming more and more a parody of himself.
  • john
well, since all his films are tanking, he might as well go back to what made him money.
what was the tital of his last film?

    "Von Deisel Grunts"
  • Myles
he should just direct a low budget film.
  • Jake
All right I don't like the XXX series but I like Vin Diesel he is a great action actor. As for Fast and Furious bring it on.
  • Graham
is xander cage a big enough character to deserve a return of title.

I dig the Riddick films, I hate the xXx and F&F films....
  • The first xXx was enjoyable. It reminded me of the old school 80's action movies in that there was a thin story, great action and not much by the way of acting. It's the kind of movie you just sit back and watch and afterwards you want to learn martial arts and kick somebody in the face!! Some movies are just meant to be enjoyed for the experience and not taken seriously or examined.

That said, I like Diesel but I think he's made a ton of mistakes in his career so far. What he did with the Riddick character started feeling forced in Chronicles. I hope they revisit it soon and tone it down a bit and get back to gritty kickassery!! I'd love to see him come back and do something great. His turn in Pvt Ryan was very enjoyable so we know he is capable of more.

Anyone who talks shit on the first movie will be seriously hurt by crushing by an avalanche they are trying to outrun on a snowmobile. Or possibly shot in the back during a Rammstein concert, or maybe shot in the back with a Datura knockout darts. POW! Guy goes down for 12 hours, wakes up, doesn't know who the hell he is, and his head's splitting like a cord of firewood.
or maybe Asia Argento will shot you through the door of my shitty prague appartment while you lecture me about changing teams and tell me this is a shitty movie. Or maybe you get on your motorcycle and chase a guy out of your stolen castle and then BLAMO- your mototcycle explodes. And certainly, if you talk shit on this movie then xander cage will somehow jump a motorcycle with no ramp 30 feet in the air to kick you in the teeth, your smelly gay gold teeth. Me? well when this movie comes out ill rent a plan and parachute out of it onto a mountain. From there I will snowboard to my local theater opening day whilst being chased by an avalance I started with some crazy looking hand granades.

i to am a little curious as to how he's comming back from the dead.maybe...he faked it or something im guessing or just a case of mistaken identity perhaps.another direction you could take it,and still have him dead for the second movie..is to have this like an offset flick and show him where he was at the end of the first..maybe samuel l jackson commin in and telling him he has a mission in bora bora.we then see that mission as the 3rd movie.they can either kill him at the end..which would suck for his fans or like i said before, have him fake his death.then..at the end of the 3rd flick, have a reference of the 2nd movie..something like..damn xander is dead,we need a new x,and we have an idea who we want.one plus u would have by having him fake his death is..u can open it up for a 4th movie.i guess u could look at the 3rd movie as being part 1.5 or a 'sprequal'..a sequal to the first but a prequal to the second.lol made that up myself!
  • Heather
Loved xXx , not the second so much, but can't wait for the third if it stars Diesel!
  • VinDiesel
