We’ve known for a while that D.J. Caruso’s first film in a planned Y: The Last Man trilogy was aiming for 2010, and he’s given a new update to UGO. The director of Disturbia and Eagle Eye confirms that the script by Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, Red Eye) was turned in last week to Warner Bros., a studio that’s said to be heavily enthusiastic and committed to the big budget endeavor. Moreover, he added that while Shia LaBeouf remains attached to the main character—a young Brooklynite named Yorick Brown who becomes the last man on an Earth populated with combative, horny women—the previously rumored Alicia Keys is not a lock to play Yorick’s government-hired protector codenamed 355

“She’s definitely someone to consider.  I thought she did a really cool job in [Smokin’ Aces]… So really, the one thing, I think I’ve mentioned this to you, I’m going for, and it’s not quite there yet on the page.  I’d love to have sort of a (Robert) DeNiro/(Charles) Grodin relationship between 355 and (Yorick).  Kind of a Midnight Run relationship…I think Alicia’s a great girl and everything but I have to make sure that she can handle the acting part of it.”

Midnight Run, eh? We’re big fans of the comic series at Slashfilm, so here’s hoping Caruso goes with another actress, possibly an unknown, and not the musician/aspiring Bond Girl. One name I’ve heard tossed around a bit with fans is Vivica Fox, based, I’m guessing, on her surprisingly good, albeit brief, performance and action skills in Kill Bill. She’s a little old for the part though, even if she did deliver laughs and sex appeal on Curb Your Enthusiasm. All requisites for 355. Any casting suggestions in the comments? And Caruso informs that fans have already mentioned Kill Bill’s Lucy Liu for the part of Dr. Mann—a brilliant hands-on Chinese/Japanese geneticist who happens to be a lesbian—but he hasn’t given any actresses much consideration. Mann would play a larger part in a proposed second film.

Caruso let it be known that Yorick’s monkey Ampersand—a seminal character in the comics—will in fact be a real monkey in the film(s). Great news. It worked in Matthew Broderick’s Project X, and it can work here (no monkey pilots).

Brian K. Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man is going to be really tough to develop. There’s the sheer size—Caruso has implied that all or part of the subplot with Yorick’s girlfriend in Australia may be kiboshed—but also enough philosophical implications and discussions therein, not to mention pop-culture references, to stretch out a semester in college. And while the comic books are “R-rated” (violence, sexuality), this will most likely be a PG-13 summer popcorn film(s). Caruso seems to have a good communication going with Vaughn, so we’re optimistic, but he’ll need to channel some early Spielbergian wonder and some of that director’s dark period tone and visuals to see it through. We’ll avoid referencing a certain scene in Indy IV.

Discuss: Any casting suggestions for Ampersand? 355?

excellent! It's great to hear that the film is still planned for production! I hadn't heard anything about it for a while. I hope dj doesn't stray too far from the source, I got a feeling it'll turn out great!
  • While I think that Shia LeBeouf is a decent actor, I'm not sure how I feel about him portraying Yorrick...
  • Olive hill
Im not sure how I feel about DJ Caruso. WARNERS wait for Eagle to drop its shit bombs then give him the project.
  • I liked Shia a lot in "A guide to recognizing your saints" but have hated him in every movie after that. They need someone more hipsterish to play Yorick. I vote for the guy from "Brick".
  • Steelo
man I can feel the storm rolling in on this one already.
    Well, best of luck

I just finished the whole series like 2 days ago. My initial reaction when it started was Vivica Fox should play 355 but then as soon as we found out she's only a few years older than Yorick... (ie: right away) sorry, she's too old. Also when I started it I thought this would make a great movie but now that I've finished it I'm not so sure... the end (last 2 issues) were just so incredibly depressing... I mean seriously... couldn't he get just a little happiness? I don't know how film audiences will swallow then end but at the same time they can't just go and change it.
  • tich
l would say joy bryant or soe saldana are better lock for 355
  • tich
    l mean zoe saldana
  • mike
    Booooooooooo!
  • edward
will smith denied his role as captain america for the cult appealing role as ampersand, my sources say.

I fscking hate Shia Lebeouf. He pretty much ruins any movie he's in (he was okay in Indy 4, I guess). He should have stayed on TV.
  • J.D.
OH BOY, we know what happens when you get LeBeouf AND monkeys in the same film....
  • Captain Awesome
    Man, another good comic ruined.
  • Mr. B
Dropping the philosophical undertones? WFT???? This is complete BS. Y is nothing but some horny boys' wanking dream if you remove the undertones. Removing the search for Beth also completely destroys Yoricks motivation to do anything. They're neutering it!!!! They might as well have a F*ing CGI monkey......
  • sari
Man, Alicia Keys should not be in movies at all. But I guess we DO live in a world where an American Idol contestant won a best actress Oscar basically for singing a song.
  • megan
... Great...this movie is going to blow. Shia is a horrible actor to portray Yorrick and Lucy Lu...seriously? I'm sure he can find an ACTUAL talented Asian actor instead of some pop culture tramp. I already see this movie being nothing more than a sad attempt to bring an amazing comic to the big screen, its efforts thwarted by the popularity of actors with less than adequate talent and predictable Hollywood plot rewriting.
  • Ben
I think LaBeouf is perfect for the part of Yorick. Aside from Ryan Reynolds (who is too old), I can't see anyone else playing him.

As for 355, I'll agree with the above-mentioned Zoe Saldana. For what it's worth, I actually think Alicia Keys would work out OK, and I'll suggest Gabrielle Union to throw another name into the mix.
  • Clint Barton
Y is one of my all time favorite graphic novels. And I'm not pleased with what I just read above. While the first Beth might not have a major physical presence in the story-line until the last few issues of the comic, her character is a major part of the story and to Yorrick's journey.

I think I would rather see Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen) direct a faithful adaptation. Zack would keep in the Amazons who cut their left breast off. Zack Snyder would be faithful to the comic.

I was also much happier when the rumor of Topher Grace as Yorrick was floating around. Nothing against Shia, but I think he is wrong for the part.
  • Delta Assault
I think the ending would work okay. I mean, the ending to The Dark Knight wasn't incredibly triumphant either. It's not the finale, but the journey that was so great about Y.
  • matt
    ugh this really disappoints me
i just finished reading the series actually, and i absolutely loved it

but shia labeouf? pg-13 summer popcorn flick?

    no thanks.
  • Hendo
yea... getting rid of gf Beth won't work. Why else would Y go to France then? to go sight seeing? the WHOLE finale of the novel relies on him going to Paris... they can't just end it in asia and have everyone go their own way just because they feel like they're done. It sounds like they're going to rewrite this as much as Wanted was re-written!
  • Emmanuel Muñoz
Please Please Please don't ruin my favorite comic book series by adding Shia Labeouf, he would no do the role justice.

And don't change the source material to the point where the plot changes, how the fuck do they get rid of the reason the journey even begins?

No pg-13, no Shia, and no changing the story to the point where the main plot is gone.
  • Mag
    ZOE SALDANA please!
  • simon
i think alicia keys would be good for agent 355. but now that i've read zoe saldana, i'm starting to feel that too. labeouf is a deadset ringer for yorick but. pumped!
  • antony
i don 't know her name, but that chick from 28 days later would be a pretty bad ass 355. aside from being british, that character reminds me of 355 quite a bit.

also, i'd like to point out that the director is concerned that his first choice "actor" for 355 might not be able to handle "the acting part" of it.

and my hopes of this being any good look like a plane skimming the trees with engines 1 and 3 burning out...
  • Elpizo
Shia was great in Even Stevens.

    That is all.
  • Justin
How about jada picket smith for 355.
  • Captain Awesome
    antony,

That's Naomie Harris and she is both hot and very talented. She would be a good pick. But as it is, this project is sounding more and more like Wanted and every other comic adaption where the director always thinks his ideas are better.
  • I think shia will be great and he's going to play the role so get over it
  • Dr. Ballon
I think Tracie Thoms (from Death Proof - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1139632/) would be great as 355.

As for people complaining about them getting rid of Beth, I think what he meant was they would be cutting the parts of the story that are from Beth's POV, like what happens to her in Australia after the men die out. They could never cut Beth completely out of the story, she is too much of a main character story-wise.
  • JWCM
I'm surprised to read all these comments dissing Shia the guy is talented; funny, engaging and smart. Plus, eagle eye looks pretty sweet to me. And no I don't work at Kurtzman/Orci. I think there are way too many people on here that have no idea what it takes to actually make a movie.
  • Adelaidey
I still maintain that the place for Y:TLM is as an HBO or Showtime TV series.
  • Tarsha
Personally I think Shia would be great for the part. As for 355, Nona Gaye.
  • Concerned Reader?
I'll be pretty depressed if Shia gets this role. After finishing the entire series (I first got into the comic some years ago), I immediately felt that Chris Evans would be a perfect Yorick. Kerry Washington would be a fantastic 355. Shannyn Sossamon might even do Hero justice. As for Dr. Mann.. Maggie Q anyone? I'll post links to their imdb pages at the bottom of this bad boy.

But honestly.. c'mon.. Shia would honestly kill the potential of an excellent, deep, clever, and overall fulfilling comic turned film. This could be one of my favorite trilogies of all time if executed properly.

    Chris Evans (Yorick...) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0262635/
    Kerry Washington (355) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0913488/
    Shannyn Sossamon (hero) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0815370/
    Maggie Q (Dr. Allison Mann) - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0702572/

    Thoughts?
  • al
i agree with joseph gordon-levitt playing yorick & maggie q as mann
  • Cheyennegoes
I had a revelation a few minutes ago...Natalie Portman should SO be Hero Brown!
  • lee
: ( i feel bad for Shia, there's so much fanboy hate for him
  • yoyoman
    come on, guys
Shia is a great actor. I really wish he will get the role.
  • Graciela
I just CANNOT see Shia as Yorick. He's just not a good fit. I'm not a fangirl but Shia plays it young and a little cutesy when Yorick isn't those things. Yorick loved Bowie and he was pop culture junkie and he's quirky and off beat. Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues to be my dream casting because I can believe him as a character like that. Shia is too, hate to say it, cookie cutter. It'll be as ridiculous as Toby as the emo Peter Parker.
  • Anne
Though I love Shia, I just wish they would get another actor to play Yorick. Someone much more fitting to the part. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also a great choice as well as James McAvoy and Zachary Levi (Chuck).
  • Sara
Dude please make this an R film!!! It deserves it! Comic books are violent and sexual in nature, your just robbing them of their greatness by slapping that PG 13 across their face!! Watchmen had the balls!!! You need to get the balls!!
