Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Sequel Deal?

Tobey Maguire is that much closer to signing a deal for the next two Spider-Man films. According to The Times Online, Maguire is willing to shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 back-to-back over six months next year for a record $50 million in salary and profit shares.

The story makes a big deal of a supposed clause in the contract which would give Maguire unprecedented early mornings and evenings off for “family time”. The idea is that shooting two films back to back is an exhausting task, and the clause would build in time off for Maguire to spend time with his 22 month old daughter. As CinemaBlend puts it, “Tobey Maguire is being paid $50 million to put in half-days at work.” But the gossipy details don’t mean much to me. Pay Maguire $100 million for all I care. As long as he’s back and there is a good screenplay and director behind the production, I will be happy.

He's so pampered, but hey, that's the business!
  • gah
Thats so much money. He better be saving that cuz once this Spider-man thing ends it'll be slim pickens. Not that I don't like him, I really think he's a good actor but I don't have to tell you guys how the whole typecasting thing works.
  • Hunter Stephenson
Don't sell the world, there, Peter. ;)

"As long as he’s back and there is a good screenplay and director behind the production, I will be happy."

amen peter. i can't even explain how happy i was when i heard that he and sam were coming back. i'm hoping for dunst too. i don't care how many people hate her, the three of them created a chemistry that really made this franchise great.

    @ gah

maguire has not and never will be typecast. check out wonderboys, cider house, seabiscuit (an orphan, a gay writer, and a jockey are not what you'd call the same role) for just a few of the roles this guy has had - he's got chops and will be more than fine when he's done with the spider-man films.
  • orange cinema
btw, just imagine if these scripts are remarkable.

“As long as he’s back and there is a good screenplay and director behind the production, I will be happy.”

...but toby and sam were there for the last movie; and it was a complete disaster.

was it supposed to be a spoof of the 1st two? if so, bravo!

but i have no problem with someone throwing $50 million at toby... i just wish they threw a 10th of that at a screenplay.
  • Delta Assault
For 50 million dollars, he better do a better job crying in these new movies. As in, not-making-us-laugh-at-him crying.
  • prophecy_projectz
Is there really a need for another Spider-Man movie, let alone two and with Emo-Spidey again?
  • marlow
Number 3 was pretty awful, it's going to be hard to get excited for sequels no matter who is in them.
  • Pentarix
The first film was decent but I couldn't give two craps about this franchise. Why are they even making these garbage films? Oh ya, because idiots will go out to see this in droves.
  • danno
$50 MILLION DOLLARS U.S?? NO WONDER THE WORLD IS GOING TO HELL IN A HANDCART!!!!!

    I'll do it. For 50p.
  • Jamie
    Hmmm.

The audience couldn't care less whether or not Maguire comes back.

    A strange deal for Sony.
  • Yes, let's have more crying, singing, dancing, and some more emo hair from Spidey! YES!!!
  • even though we all didnt find part 3 that good, were all going to go see the next two just cause its spider-man.
  • Have Raimi and co. admitted, either publicly or to themselves, that Spidey 3 was a dud? If not, I'm not sure they learned the lessons from that sequel (less villains ... less of everything, actually).

It's hard to muster up real excitement over this franchise at this point. It actually could use a new director, someone young and hungry and eager to take the story in fresh directions.
  • Oi Vey
I really really think people need to let Spider-Man 3 out of their systems and give part 4 (if it does get made) a chance. Part 3 sucked..okay that's true but I'm still a fan of the first two.
  • Albert Brodsky
I turned the channel to Starz the other night right when the "song and dance" was starting. It was brutal to watch. Peter Parker getting on the piano right when Dunst was attempting to sing. Awful. I can't believe no one had the balls to tell Raimi it was shite before they unleashed the final edit. Totally ruined any credibility that franchise had.

I'll be forced to take my kids to the sequels, but I have a feeling I won't be happy about it.

It's kind of sad, because I really liked the second one, and the first wasn't too bad either.
  • I'm completely over Spidey movies. Seriously...Spidey 3 was horrible. I can't understand how it made so much money in the box office. I can't see where 4 & 5 will come back from that but hey...there's a lot of money to be made that isn't mine so GO TOBEY!!
  • Captain Awesome
This next film better be epic, especially after that retarded third film.

If not, they can always reboot the series, for realz.
  • Brody
Staying in character everyday for 6 months would really suck.
  • gocitizen
...and the fanboy claws come out.

Just be happy Marvel is making more comic-based films and thank Spiderman 1 and 2 for making it possible.
  • I'm so over Spiderman. 3 pretty much killed it.

Also name a movie that has gone into 4 & 5 territory and not sucked balls. (I guess with the exception of Harry Potter...I gotta give those movies props for being solid flicks)
  • Harrison and Steve
A grand opportunity for Marvel to equate the success of 'The Dark Knight' with its franchise hero.

"THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN" will be the grownup real world epic to the previous kiddy trilogy.
  • andy
I, for one, thought the dance number in S3 was hilarious, in a good way. Something distinctly Raimi about it-- reminded me of some scenes in Evil Dead. Of course, the movie altogether wasn't that great (presumably very profitable nonetheless).

I hugely skeptical when movies are filmed back to back. Usually end up being Epic Turds. LOTR being an exception.
  • Henry Jones Jr
Glad someone said it, andy. Yes, Spidey 3 was a bit over the top, but it was that Sam Raimi humor that's in a lot of his other movies like Army of Darkness and Evil Dead. Silly and cheesy, but you just have to laugh at it. People need to lighten up. Consider that Peter Parker is a nerd and when a nerd gets the kind of power he did, he's bound to embarass himself. I thought it was completely in character and didn't make for nearly the disaster people make it out to be. It's still the weakest of the 3 movies, but it's also still better than 90% of the other comic book movies. Lighten up folks!
  • Superman
STOP TORTURING US. STOP IT! PLEASE! WE BEG YOU! LEAVE SPIDER-MAN ALONE!
  • abhishek
if the screenplay is really good and Sam is back.....they did better throw that money on production design and special effects. cause with every other thing going well, maguires doesn't bring anything great to the table. half the time he is in a mask.

and he doesn't know how to cry.
  • Loz
    I can't think of anyone in their right mind;
who'd turn down great, big cart fulls of money!
    50million dollars!
    Tobey Maguire be warned:
'There's a price to pay when you sell your soul to the devil'.
These Studio execs need to get their acts
    together.
This is nothing new, this has
been going on for 7 decades.
  • Mikey M
    50 Million? Yikes.
Wasn't there admitted interferrance from the studios for the last one? They wanted a second villian or something like that?
They need to stay out of it.
  • Meli
I respect him for wanting family time, but half-day every day? Hm. That part seems a little much for the money he's asking, but if you can make that deal all the more power. I know what it's like to want to be there for your kid.
Of course my biggest worry is the movie on a whole. While I can't see how it can possibly be worse than 3, can they regain the goodness of the 1st two? I think it's possible, but right now I feel a tentative dread.
  • I think they should match the number of villans to the number in the series.

    Example:

    Spiderman: 1 Villan (green goblin)
Spiderman 2: 2 Villans (doc oc, black goblin)
Spiderman 3: 3 Villans (Sandman, Venom, black goblin)

The more villans the better, right?! Just look at the old Batman movies...it did wonders for those.
  • blueberry
    I agree.

    Part 4 = 4 baddies.

Part 5 = 5 baddies, but Peter kills himself in the end because he can't bare to take on six baddies for part 6.
  • Ripper
It could work. Supposedly, Raimi wanted to shoot Spiderman 3 and 4 back to back, with the symbiote suit story unfolding over the two movies. Probably 3 would've dealt with Peter and his dark side, while 4 would've dealt with Venom. Sony didn't want it and wanted everything crammed into 3, which is evident if you can sit through that mess of a movie. If they develop the characters, story, villians and relationships correctly, we could have a great couple of superhero movies with a great story arc.

    Let's be opened minded.

I heard they did the same thing with XMEN. Singer wanted to develop the Phoneix story over XMEN 3 and 4, but the studio already had a release date, and no script was ready. Singer wanted to delay the release date and write up a new script. But the studio wanted just one film to come out on the release date no matter what, and Singer bailed out to goto Superman. In came ratfaced-Ratner and a great superhero movie was ruined by a lame director and money hungry studio.
  • edog
I'd love to see Kraven's Last Hunt work its way into one of the 2 sequels.
  • john
    50 MILLION??????????

for 50 million the sequels better NOT SUCK!!!!!!!
NO VENOM, CARNAGE OR BIZARRO SPIDERMAN!!
NO DANCING, NO GWEN, NO ERIC FORMAN, NO JESSICA ALBA!!!!!!!!
  • carg0
$50 million in salary AND profit shares?!?

he's a great fit as peter parker but NO ONE is worth that kind of money. especially when you consider how embarrassingly awful "3" was. i know i won't be seeing any more spiderman movies in the theater. i don't care who or what's in it so long as that hack Raimi is directing.

i don't know how much will be sunk into the budget for both sequels but if they can afford to give Maguire alone that kind of money BEFOREHAND, Sony must be prepared to sink a colossal amount of money overall. which means they must be planning to make "4" and "5" quite a spectacle.
  • Harrison and Steve
    possible villains (sinister six?)

    1.THE LIZARD
    2.Carrot Top must be ELECTRO
    3. Bruce Campbell either as MYSTERIO or RINGMASTER
    4. Ron Dean as RHINO
    5. women will want a female villain .... Megan fox/Black Cat?
    6. Molina returns as DocOck, from some underwater lab

six might be too much. i just want the villains to frame spiderman so we can see the city and the cops go after him like they did in the 1967 cartoons.
  • evilspidey
They need to lose Sam Raimi, Kirsten Dunst, and Tobey mcguire, and start fresh like Batman Begins.

Spiderman 3 was Batman and Robin Bad.

    - spidey
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
If they're committed to making 4 and 5 with Raimi and the same cast, that's putting a TON of faith into the team. I'm actually surprised they would agree to 5 films.

I would love to see another great Spidey movie with everybody again, and especially have them leave on a high note. I think there needs to be more focus on a good script that will not change under pressure during production, and not act formulaic (less damsels in distress, less structure around a single moral that needs to be learned and is brought up right near the climax ; something more complex is needed). 3 didn't ruin the series for me, but I choose to pretend most of it doesn't exist. 1 and 2 I still find great.
  • Aaron
$25 million a movie is a reasonable deal considering the risk of how much the movies would lose if they replaced Tobey with someone else. Spiderman 3 was so bad the franchise would lose all credibility if he left.

Still it seems criminal for one actor to command a higher salary than the entire film crew combined, the ones who are responsible for making him look good.
  • Deck Mackenzie
Decent news except Tobey better hit the gym, he was looking a little paunchy in Spidey 3. Two films back-to-back smells like the Matrix sequels to me and look how good they turned out. @ gah: I liked Tobey in The Good German, he was also in Seabiscuit so there goes your typecasting theory.
