Paramount Home Entertainment have announced that a companion film/sequel to Kung Fu Panda will be released on DVD/Blu-ray on November 9th, bundled with the original film as part of a “Pandamonium Double Pack”. The companion film is titled Secrets of the Furious Five. While the slug-line “The Kung Fu Panda story continues” leads you to believe that the film is a sequel, THR reports that the film will delve into the back stories of the characters from the original film, and that Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman reprise their respective voice roles as Po and Master Shifu. Not much more is known at this time. A single disc version of Kung Fu Panda will also be available outside of the two movie pack.

I’ve never been a fan of Disney’s direct-to-dvd sequels due to the quality of the animation and story. I don’t see a day and date release for a direct-to-DVD Panda film as being a good idea. The film was very popular with children and critics, and the double pack release gimmick seems unnecessary and unneeded.

Update: Apparently Secrets of the Furious Five is only a 20 minute long short film. Basically, Dreamworks Animation is following Pixar’s lead and releasing a short film featuring the characters from the feature film along with the DVD release. But instead of releasing the short as a special feature, they are releasing it on a separate disc as part of a bundled two-pack. It all seems pretty deceptive if you ask me.

And for some strange reason, Paramount has also decided to release the DVD/Blu-ray disc on a Friday, instead of the traditional Tuesday. DVD titles have occasionally been released on Fridays to coincide with a particular theatrical release, or on Monday to coincide with a holiday. But releasing a major DVD title on a Sunday is said to be a first.

Is not a sequel. It is a 20 minute short.

I agree it's a bit weird. Why package a 20 minute film in a separate DVD holder? I think the real question is how much will "double DVD" package cost?
  • Black Eagle
Everybody add short's into the DVD Features, but they are not longer than 7 to 10 minutes.
20 minutes is too long to give it for free, that is why they will add it as a pack, and of course is going to cost a "little" more.

This isn't anything new. Dreamworks has always done it with their animated movies. Shrek 2/Shrek 3D... They always release the feature on DVD with another short movie. Probably 20 minutes of junk they did for the movie that they cut out or something. I'm sure by now, they have the 20 minute shorts in mind while they're making the movie. They also always release their animted movies on fridays, probably because parents are more likely to pick it up for the kids to watch on a friday night rather than a tuesday night.
  • It makes sense -- they got all those name actors to voice the Furious Five and they were barely in the movie. This is probably excised backstory that was arranged into a short film.

I'm down. Kung Fu Panda was awesome.

Not only has Dreamworks been releasing 2-pack DVD sets (with on feature and one short/bonus disc), but the set looks like it could be a Wal-Mart release set. Wal-Mart will release sets of this type, a bonus extra disc with some sort of special, CD, or short with almost all of their big releases for about $4-5 more than the single disc. Usually it's not worth it.
  • I'm excited! My ONLY complaint about Kung Fu Panda — and it was a common one, judging from the reviews I read — was that the Furious Five were rather underdeveloped. If this new short really addresses that and isn't just a throwaway story, I'll be a happy camper. The movie was terrific.

    Definitely picking this up.

For you all, this is not a put together of cut scenes.
This is a full short done exclusive for the DVD. it contains a very fun back story with all new footage.
  • Unnecessary and unneeded? Is that like repetitive and redundant?

uh huh. So, when is Wall-e coming out?
