Korean auteur Park Chan-Wook, most famous for the phenomenally kickass Oldboy, is getting some help from American shores for his next film, Thirst. Universal Pictures and Focus Features will be investing and co-producing, and Focus will distribute the film in North America.

The film, about a priest who becomes a vampire after a medical experiment gone wrong, certainly seems like an interesting project for Park. Said priest, played by Song Kang-ho (The Host and Park’s own Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance), is also in love with his friends wife—something which will surely be affected by his newfound vampirism. In a production synopsis for the film, Park explains what drew him to it:

This film was originally called “The Bat” to convey a sense of horror - after all,
it is about vampires.  But it is also more than that.  It is about passion and a
love triangle.  I feel that it is unique because it is not just a thriller, and not
merely a horror film, but an illicit love story as well.

Honestly, I’m surprised it’s taken so long for Hollywood to wake up and take notice of the enormous talent coming out of South Korean cinema—and it could be that they’ve waited too long. While I still keep a close eye on Korean cinema, it’s clear that there is far less hype surrounding Korean films today than there was a few years ago. At the same time, I suppose it’s better late than never, and Chan-Wook is certainly one of the best Korean directors for American studios to gamble on.

I'm a huge fan of Oldboy. Not so much Mr Vengance, and I haven't seen Lady Vengance or I'm a Cyborg yet. I'm hip to this tho!

Damn but Oldboy was soooo Good!!
  • Roberto
Big fan. All for the financing so long as they stay the hell out of the way and let the man do what he knows how to do.

Yes, Old Boy was great. He's got a stable of truely awesome actors too.
  • Alex
I'm a big Park Chan-Wook fan and any new movie from him is very exciting, especially one about vampires. I'm a Cyborg is wonderful yet cheesy. I agree with Roberto. As long as he gets to do what he's been doing all along, I will be very happy. I'm just afraid his movies aren't that marketable in the US and would be controlled so they make more money here. That would be unfortunate.

    Great director.

On a Korean cinema sidenote I can't wait till The Good the Bad and the Weird is out on blu if ever...
  • orange cinema
yeah, I'm down with anything this guys touches. The Korean cinema takes such unbelievable risks.
  • Emmanuel Muñoz

    @ emmanuel munoz

'cyborg' is way different than the vengeance triliogy, but fun as hell - you'll love it.

i agree with devindra, i'm suprised it has taken this long.

sounds lame until you put Chan wook Park in the sentence.

I think Hollywood financing foreign films is a good thing as long as they don't try to control the films. Park Chan-Wook is just a drop in the sea of talented foreign directors and it's nice to see Hollywood taking an interest in them. I just hope Hollywood understands that there's a different between American cinema and foreign cinema and stays the hell out of the way.
  • Anomaly
I loved the vengeance trilogy, haven't seen Cyborg yet. I'm looking forward to this.
  • msanchez
This guy's revenge trilogy were crazy and if you ain't seen oldboy then shame on you. You can count me in on this one. The guy is a genius!
  • I'm Huge Park Chan-Wook fan. Hopefully the studios won't try to Americanize it too much. I am very glad to see that Korean cinema is being more widely embraced in the West.
  • Justin
Loved the hell out of Oldboy, sadly haven't seen anything else by him.
  • Rachel Summers
HOLY CRAP!! this is the best thing I've heard in a while! I love Park Chan-Wook. I just finished watching Lady Vengeance for like the 249845 time yesterday! Its one of my all time faves!

I can't wait to see what he does with this!!!! I'm so excited!

    @ krakajap

i didn't even think about the looming hand of a hollywood studio in wook's buisness. like you, i hope they write a check, step back, and shut the fuck up. especially with a guy so who DOES NOT operate in a typical or formulaic fashion. it'd be a shame to see some suits ruin his off the wall way of expression.
  • Bilobatedtimmo
Im VERY excited for this, Ive seen all of Park Chan-Wook's film besides I'm a Cyborg, and loved them all. My personal favorit is Lady Vengance, with Oldboy as a close second.
  • Kevin
Park's best movie is "JSA" to me
  • scooter
IT's amazing that only one person on here has mentioned JSA. great film!! could possibly be his best. It's definately his most accessable to a general audience that aren't keen on violent films or quirky comedies. My favorite is Sympathy For Mr Vengeance. It was the first film I saw by him & it totally rocked my world.

I truly hope Universal & Focus let Park do what he wants and release his true vision to the American public. I'm excited for this film & it would be a crying shame if they tamper with it.

    -Sympathy For Mr Vengeance
    -Oldboy
    -JSA
    -I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay
    -Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

/\that's how i'd rank them, though Oldboy & JSA can be interchangable.
  • younes
