The Wrestler on December 19th

Fox Searchlight isn’t wasting any time. Earlier this week they purchased the North American rights to Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, and not even a week later, a release date has been solidified:

December 19th 2008

As expected, the film is being released by the end of the year so that the film can qualify for Award consideration. I don’t think I’ve read a review yet that didn’t mention both Mickey Rourke and Academy Award nomination in the same sentence. I wouldn’t be surprised if the film didn’t get a few more nominations as well. From what I understand, part of the decision that went into the acquisition earlier this week, was which studio could position the film for awards consideration.

Note: I’m not sure how wide the initial release is. Fox Searchlight is known for their platform releases. So it is possible that the film might initially open in New York and Los Angeles on this date, before expanding wide in January 2009.

i can't wait for this one. i've got a lot of friends who are die hard wrestling fans, but not the cinema geek that i am - so i've been able to get them all stoked that there is finally a film that takes their passion seriously. though i'm not sure how they'll react to all the drama...
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
    Really? What about Heath!?!
  • Mark
@Suge: I heard there's a nude scene in it, so it's going to be R-Rated.

I know right now, I will definitely believe the buzz about this flick due to its source. But, I wonder the crowd this movie might bring in... well, they don't strike me as folks that might not even know what an Oscar is - if you know what I mean!
Which brings me to my point, how the hell is this movie going to be marketed? Fox Searchlight does not spend a lot of money on their marketing and typically they don't have material that (forgive me) could bring in droves of people - like this movie could, based on the title alone!
Any thoughts? Wrestling fans run the gamut on demographics... from the female neurosurgeon who knows its fake but just loves the opera of it, to the toothless, Jimbo-Joe who swears its real and talked to Ric Flair personally about it.
