Darren Aronofsky’s Noah

In this week’s three part interview with Darren Aronofsky, the filmmaker shared some new details on his long in the works religious epic Noah. I’ve been getting e-mails all morning from /Film readers wanting to know more, so I thought I’d bring you a history of everything we know about the project.

The idea originated ten years ago, even before Pi, when Aronofsky saw a museum exhibit. But the director’s fascination with Noah’s Ark began when he was only 13-years-old. Aronofsky won a United Nations poetry competition at his Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn school. The poem was about the end of the world as seen through the eyes of Noah. When Brad Pitt abruptly left The Fountain just weeks before principal photography, Aronofsky took some time off and began to develop a variety of different projects, one of them being the Noah screenplay. Aronofsky told The Guardian in April 2007:

“Noah was the first person to plant vineyards and drink wine and get drunk. It’s there in the Bible - it was one of the first things he did when he reached land. There was some real survivor’s guilt going on there. He’s a dark, complicated character. The tragedies we perform on each other are so well reported. Quite clearly, the planet is dying, and we are dying on it.”

And today we learned in the third part of our exclusive interview, that Darren wrote the screenplay with Fountain co-writer and college friend Ari Handel.

“We have an amazing screenplay,” Aronofsky told /Film. “It’s a great script and it’s HUGE. And we’re starting to feel out talent. And then we’ll probably try and set it up.”

Big and Huge are the words Aronofsky uses to describe the non-traditional English language biblical epic. But what gets me excited is Aronofsky’s passionate pitch:

“It’s the end of the world and it’s the second most famous ship after the Titanic. So I’m not sure why any studio won’t want to make it,” said Aronofsky. “I think it’s really timely because it’s about environmental apocalypse which is the biggest theme, for me, right now for what’s going on on this planet. So I think it’s got these big, big themes that connect with us. Noah was the first environmentalist. He’s a really interesting character. Hopefully they’ll let me make it.”

Is anyone in Hollywood reading this? Someone needs to get this into development ASAP.

Another Religious epic for the religious right.
    I will pass.
  • Mikey: I get the impression that the film might be somewhat controversial, and not something the religious right will get behind. I could be wrong.
  • this is awesome news. i think that darren definitely is the man to do this sort of film. good find peter.
  • Captain Awesome
ha, this sounds really fucking cool.
  • Henry Jones Jr
"Quite clearly, the planet is dying, and we are dying on it."

    Drama Queen!
  • Ryan
    That sounds f-ing awesome.

remember snarky dweebs, if you make fun of this you will financially molested by the anti defamation league.

I can't wait for this. even if it isn't historically accurate.
  • edc
..BE financially molested by the anti defamation league.

If I am not mistaken, one of Noah's sons got drunk and tried to fuck him while he was asleep and was killed for it. I swear to...well...it's in the Bible. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it went down something like that.
  • Superman
Don't knock the bible, it's got some great stories. But I'm curious why he wants to do noah's story so much. There's better and more realistic ones in there I'd say. Strange, but whatever.
  • max
A remake of the Tony Danza picture? Well fuck, I'm in.
  • Hunter Stephenson
I'm imagining this as Aronofsky's Apocalypse Now in a good way. Hollywood, greenlight the project, no excuses.
  • Roberto
@superman: It's pretty compelling to try and visualize. Look at the picture at the top of the article. That's nothing compared to what could be done. Maybe he just wants to see it on the screen. Just a thought. It's not really my favorite either.

I hope this movie will be made with a lot of resources put into CGI. I would like to see some dinos too fierce to be put on the Ark. And I hope drama will not be created just for the sake of drama like in that movie the Ten Commandments.
  • Andrew
Mikey- What the hell are you talking about? This isn't that toolbag dipshit Mel Gibson making another movie. It's a retelling of an old old epic that has relevance today. I myself am an atheist but, as a former Catholic, I have read much of the Bible, and there are some deep stories with some compelling characters in the Old Testament. To me, it is fiction, but some of it I look at as damn good literature.

    @ Mikey

The religious right hasn't had universal praise for religious epics since the MGM/Heston days. Even The Passion had its critics. Plus, after the double-dildo scene in Requiem, I doubt church leaders will be rushing to endorse this film.
  • I think this is a great idea for a movie.

I'm currently studying Genesis and this story has more to it than people think.

Aronofsky is dead on with it's mass appeal, from the danger of the flood to the character struggles for Noah and others.

I hope this film gets made. Maybe it'll show non Christians that Christianity isn't such a stupid thing.
  • Bobcat
Sounds very intriguing to me, I hope it's done!
  • Dangerous Dave
From the way he describes it it seems like it'd a cool idea if he did like a Noah's Ark/future flood apocalypse juxtaposition type film, but that'd probably be stretching it quite a bit.
  • Gajonka
WHY DONT WE JUST COME OUT AND SAY "HEY, ITS DARREN ARANOFSKY WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    CHRIST!!!

NOAH IS NOT A GOOD IDEA, LOOK AT THE BRUCE ALINGHT AND EVAMN ALMINGHTY NOT GOOD,

WE NEED AN EPIC WAR FILM, HE SHOULD DO ATANLEY KUBRICK'S "NAPOLEON", THE SCRIPT IS ALREADY WRITTEN.
  • I thought they did this last year with Evan Almighty. Actually
Titanic is a real ship, and Noah's Ark is a make believe one!
  • South Texas Terror
I will see anything Aronofsky makes. even if I have to see it more than once to understand it.
  • Jbiza
The Ark is not make believe....check out Mt. Ararat.
  • Captain Awesome
Can someone hit Gajonka with a fucking brick?
  • 790
    I smell a Thor cameo,,,,
  • Cam was the son who saw noah naked and passed out and he mocked him and he was punished for it, all of his decendants would be servants to his brothers and their decendants
  • gocitizen
If the ark is actually a giant spaceship and Noah is played by Diora Baird in a thin t-shirt, I'm so on board for this.
  • moulie
looks sick, movies that borrow religious themes are often the most deep and staisfying...I have confidence that Aronofsky can deliver
  • Agent Iron J
    Bring on the Thor cameo...
  • Justin
I would simply love to see Aronofsky tell Noah's Ark, especially if he's given an enormous budget to make this deep, dark epic. Could be spectacular.
  • I'd love to see more fantasy from Darren after the wonderful film The Fountain. I think he would do a great Noah movie and I've discussed this on my movie site.
  • Garrett
I just don't see how the story of Noah and the Ark has anything to do with environmentalism. The flood that was created by God was because of mans wickedness which I assume he wants to parallel man helping the planet die today (his words). His interpretations are definitely a reach.
