The Soloist Movie Trailer

DreamWorks has released the trailer for The Soloist. Written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), The Soloist tells the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (played by Jamie Foxx), a musical prodigy who developed schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard School. Ayers became homeless, playing the violin and the cello in the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Robert Downey Jr plays Steve Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times who developed a friendship while writing an article about Ayers. You can read the original newspaper article which became the basis for the story on LATimes.com. Catherine Keener and Stephen Root co-star.

The film looks a little more glossy and “Hollywood” than the Oscar bait that I had been expecting. But if Downey is there, I’m in as well. Tell me what you think in the comments below.

The Soloist is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21st, just in time for Awards season.

is it just me, or is the music drowning out all the dialogue? i can't understand what anyone's saying all i hear are violins!
  • Baron Von Cheddar
Yeah, it looks good. Too bad the trailer sells it as Oscar bait.

It also seems to give away the entire story/emotional arc of the film. Are there awards given for "Best Trailer to Ruin A Movie"?
  • Foxx isn't going full retard, so it looks like Oscar #2 for him. And, although this will probably be Downey's weakest performance this year, this will be the one that will get him a nod.
  • MKW
Holy crap, is that three movies that RBJ has starred in this year? I'm impressed.
  • I just hope RDJ told Jaime Foxx to not go full retard in an Australian accent while shooting the pic. You know, for the Oscar and all.

This is a straight rip off of Caveman's Valentine with Samuel L Jackson...
  • @ Kip Mooney - duh you beat me to it...
  • GregoryV
I'm really looking forward to this film. Bach Cello Suite No.1 Prelude always gets me with the tears.
  • Tan
    REAL6 -

Except no one gave two shits about that film.
  • Ray Stanz
This film is not based off Caveman's Valentine...this is based off of a true story.
  • h2opr00f
LOL @ the full retard comments.. classic
  • Kermit the FROG
why are all homeless ppl in movies brilliant?
  • Foxx might get a nomination but nobody's going to take the Oscar away from Sean Penn in Milk...

And agreed with Matt, I hear violins and muted dialogue...
  • cory
also its a little impossible since this doesnt come out for another 10 months.
  • REAL6
TAN: That movie was actually pretty good.

Ray Stanz: Same thing. Homeless man from Juliard school. blah blah
  • L Ron
I saw this movie at a test screening and it was a mess. Several people actually walked out and, after watching the whole thing, I wish I had too.

It had a superb combination of talent... it just didn't gel together like it should have. Ugh. It really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Looks like a fasinating pile of crap.

Foxx and Downey Jr. both look good, but Joe Wright's direction is the thing that has me most excited about this film. He proved himself with Pride and Prejudice and Atonement to be a very gifted filmmaker, and this looks like a decidedly different type of film, even if it looks a bit more Hollywood schmaltz than his previous efforts.
  • doly
I agree, anything with RDJ in it I will gladly fork over cash to see. I'm so happy to see him back on the big screen. I became a fan of his when I saw Less Than Zero. Foxx isn't one of my favorite actors but I'll still go to see this film.

I absolutely recommend reading the original columns about the relationship, some of the best journalism I have come across. Definitely another case of the book being better than the film.
  • Adam
So uhhh, did anyone else pick up on the fact that Downey Jr's facial injury switches sides? at the start with the bike crash, the left side of his face is messed up. next scene u see him in, its the right side. whoops?
  • Donivan
    Eh,not impressed.
  • Ohiofile
    I can haz oskarr??!!
  • Arolex
Joe Wright,Jamie Foxx and Downey Jr. i cant wait.
  • fanboy d
everytime i see jamie foxx i think how much cooler collateral would have been if it was a will smith/tom cruise movie...*sigh*
  • Marilyn Jacobson
The trailer looks like a bunch of Hollywood glitz. Since I'm a cellist, I'll go for the potential music. It doen't look like Jamie really plays the cello in the trailer. I wish a real player could also act!
  • phillip
I wish i knew what the name of the song is that the cello solo is please please let me know thanks
  • An
I believe it's Bach being played.
Marilyn, real musicians do act too. Patrck Tatten, who plays Jamie's roommate at Julliard, is a trained violinist as well as an actor.
  • Jamis
    @phillip

It's Bach. I think it's being played by Yo-Yo Ma. It's the first song on this album. What throws me is that all the version I've heard are solo cello. Who did the arrangement with the orchestra, the horns, etc as heard in the trailer?
  • Alison
Well, I haven't even seen the film but my God what a load of crap.
So egocentric - a poor and mentally ill black man being saved by a dysfunctional white man - so the white man feels good about himself.

At the end of the film RDJ says "He's my friend " well bully for you - for having a poor black friend.

If only Americans in Los Angeles could be so concerned about their homeless "friends" in real life -
    Load of Hollywood superficial crap.
I wont be seeing it - well maybe as a comedy!
