Reader Forum: The Fringe Premiere

So after much ballyhoo, J.J. Abrams’s Fringe premiered last night on Fox. I’m curious to know how you guys felt about the pilot episode, and if this is a show you’d like to see covered on Slashfilm in the future. The ratings are in—roughly 9 million viewers—and while it’s not necessarily a homerun off the bat, word of mouth will play a large factor in the proceeding weeks. Do you expect the show to reach the heights of The X-Files in its prime? Did the 90-minute $10 million premiere grab you?

    no and no.
  • lancelewis
Possibly, and yes. For a pilot, I felt it hit the ground running solid. Many pilots can take a while to find themselves (STTNG). I enjoyed it and will watch again. Not sure you should cover it religiously on this site tho. your call...

No Way. No How. Didn't have the same "umph" as the X-Files. Just felt... outplayed.

I actually watched this a while back when it was leaked onto the internet, and I must say that cut out a few noticeable parts. There was one great shot of the father and son and that was removed completely for what ever reason.

But anyways, I thought this was a really solid start for the show and I know I'm certainly looking forward to the next episode.

had some cool elements and it has potential, but the pilot was a bit of a slog. The main character has no interesting qualities at all, there was a fair amount of painfully cheesy dialogue and the weird 3-D location titles should definitely go. With that being said, I still think it might become something better.
  • Quan
I thought it was a horrible show. It seemed to drag, the acting was stiff, the dialogue was ridiculous, and I got too bored to watch the second hour. I just turned it off and went to sleep.
  • Adam B.
I thought it was pretty good overall (minus the lady with the mechanical arm). XD
but yeah, I think it started off really strong (the plane and mental institution scenes in particular).
hard to judge it off one episode, I just hope Abrams sticks with the series.
  • Dustin
oh, two other positives, Kirk Acevedo and Lance Reddick.
  • Tom Copeland
I saw the pilot a few weeks back, so it's not sitting in the fore front of my mind, but from what I can recall I don't remember being bowled over by it. Sure, it was good enough to warrant further viewing, and i'm interested to see how the plot will develop over the season. But there's no way it will reach the great heights of the mighty X-files. Oh, and didn't it have some rather awful CGI during the LSD enduced sequence?
  • Graham
I thought it was rad and will continue to watch it as long as fox doesnt cancell it next week
  • Pentarix
    No and no, quite bad.
  • Ghost
I found the cast pretty unlikeable.

I was bored and annoyed. I get that JJ Abrams is mr. plot twist, but his characters are absolutely one-dimensional cliches and their relationships are INCREDIBLY BORING. The episode was full of twists, but it's lame and half-assed to think we'll care about agent dawson (?) just because she said I love you to the dead guy whose skin is falling off. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but the script sucked, the characters sucked, and the only thing going for it was the name "JJ Abrams". And this is coming from someone who really, really likes most of the actors involved. Sorry, it's just plain weak. And it will probably be a smash hit.
  • For a show on a network I thought it showed a lot of promise and it caught and kept my attention. I can't imagine calling yourself a geek and not at least be interested to see where they take things, the subject matter alone warrants that IMO.

OMFG, was the best premiere ever! This show rocks, and I cant wait til next weeks ep. Reminds me of Xfiles back in the day but this is better.

  • I did a high school filmmakers workshop this summer in NY and HBO invited us to see an advanced screening of the show. I didn't like it. Lines were to cheesy, actors not that good, and JJ should have directed it. I love the idea, but they could have done better. Hopefully, what they showed last night was a better cut.
  • John
It was so b-o-r-i-n-g and the acting was awful. Please don't even think of comparing this with the X-Files.
  • trazadone
As long as the awful Pacey from Dawson's Creek stars in this, I'll be skipping it. I suspect it won't make it past its first season.
  • McGinty
This was classic hook 'em in Abrams. If it weren't so obvious what the end would be (and what about "The Pattern"- Dun Dun Dun! I would probably be hooked, but after Lost it just seems like formula.
I also hated the location titles (look at what I can do!), but the acting was fair (dialogue less so), and if you go back to the first x-files, that show sucked, folks!
Let's just finish Lost and I can stop watching TV again.
  • I liked it. It needs to grow a bit, but I felt it was a pretty promising trailer. I don't think it's ever going to be my favorite show on TV, but if it keeps it up, I'll keep coming back.
  • I gave it a 7.5 out of 10. Its a mix of X-Files, House, Altered States and Moonlighting. Very well made with interesting cast. I'll keep watching!
  • I found the show a bit dull. The story took too long to get started. I didn't like the cast all that much. I will watch the second episode, but if it doesn't pick up, I am done.
  • Mike
i actually loved it. definitely gonna keep watching
  • MikeEm
Just got around to streaming this today. I was surprised by how much fun I had watching it. It was quirky enough and suspenseful enough to make me want to catch the next few eps. i really liked the cast, and i especially thought the faux in-camera credits were a nice touch.
  • Chase
Definitely more Transformers than LOST. The pacing was horrible. The dialogue was cheesy. The way that the exposition was placed was ludicrous and seemed to take up 95% of the script. Plot twist at the end was out of nowhere and made no sense. No setup for it at all. Pulled straight from the ass.

I did think that Joshua Jacksons character was fairly likable. It seemed like JJ wrote all of his lines and the Transformer twins wrote everything else.

I thought it was a good start to the series. Yeah, the titles looked like some guy ripped off the Heroes "chapter" titles and added 3d. Seemed to get in the way and would have preferred the tried and true lower third.

It is a typical Abrams "mystery box" show. Seems like it could do well but that will depend on the direction it takes.

Feels like an X-files for a new generation.
  • Johnny
I really enjoyed the show! I think that there has been a void of sci-fi shows on network tv. I hope the show makes it!
  • Graham
they should ditch the floating signs
  • Tobi
I think it has the potential to be good...I didn't think the pilot was all that impressive, but I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide if it's worth watching. I think the fact that it involves a plane crash and a mysterious corporation nostalgic for whatever reason. (hehe..) The only thing I really hope it does is explain Cloverfield...that'd be great...
  • Aaron
I see more of a "Lost" approach to the show. To be honest, I only started watching "Lost" because I wanted to know what that damn creature in the jungle was. 4 seasons later and my answer is still forth-coming. That's kind of how I felt about "Fringe." I'll watch it (on Hulu in order to avoid the 5 minutes of commercials every 10 minutes) in order to experience the meta-story. However, the weekly stories will be fairly standard.
  • zinkywinks
It has potential. I saw the pilot a few months ago when it was leaked and without the sparse commercial breaks it was a lot easier to sink into the story. On tv however, you realize how slow paced it was. The should have introduced "The Pattern" a whole lot earlier, or at least hinted at it. At first it was a crime drama, then a supernatural drama, then I don't know what. Hopefully they settled on what it's supposed to be. I like the general idea, but I think they're struggling to put the idea on paper.

I'll watch next week and we'll see after that.
  • Mark
I love the premise and what it could be but I was very underwhelmed by the pilot.
  • Rick
I was disappointed. I was REALLY hoping for an old-school X-Files type show, but got new-school X-Files; the show that lost it's fanbase because of it's wild direction into government conspiracies, aliens, and double-agents.

I will probably watch the next one to "make sure" that I don't like it, but I'm not impressed so far. There were several times I thought there were script cards behind the cameras they were reading off of, and I'm not convinced of the "mad scientist" guy. He's lucid one moment and out there the next with no real "trigger". Eh... Not sure about him...
  • Trevor
I will definately be watching the rest of the season.
  • It wasn't terrible but I was bored through a lot of it. If the next episode isn't awesome, I'm done with it.
  • GWGumby
I was entertained. I'm not hooked, but I'll keep it on my DVR and see where it goes.

The comparison to X-Files are very deserved. I was reminded of the show over and over again. In fact, if the new X-Files movie had been at least this interesting, I wouldn't have felt so disappointed walking out of the theater.

I dont see how some of you people are just automatically calling this show crap. I think that it was a really smart show and set itself up for a really long and entertaining run. Im really not understanding how people think it is that bad.
  • Aaron
Yes, I found it to be really good. I'll be watching the show for the remainder of the fall.
  • Dan
Boo. JJ needs to focus on Lost.
  • Adam B.
apparently I'm one of the few who thought the floating intro signs were kinda cool.
    to each his own though.
  • sari
It was like that movie The Cell...minus the cool parts. And young Vince Vaughn.

Oh and the that company in the show, Massive Dynamic, is basically a wannabe Skynet.
  • Justin
I did quite enjoy it, but a few things bothered me.

The plot device of the pearl auto-pilot system seemed mostly unnecessary and too far fetched.

The FBI agent who was infected with the disease had vastly different effects bothered me. People on the plane are losing their skin almost immediately, yet they can get him in an ideal situation so quickly and after a large explosion like that, then end up with transparent skin instead is a very large lapse of judgment on the writer's part.

Finally when they were getting that doctor to help the FBI agent they let him shave. Yeah, he looks like a hobo, but they gave a person who is in an insane asylum a giant pair of old rusty scissors? That's not going to happen in any insane asylum. Not only that, but he leaves the bathroom completely clean shaven.

A few things that could have been changed to make it a bit more believable, but they chose for something that requires far more suspension of disbelief than one should have watching a science fiction TV series. That being said, I'll be watching it this coming Tuesday as well because I was thoroughly entertained.

it's got those pr-commerical break LOST strings.
  • Phillycheesesteak
I thought it was pretty darn awesome. Especially John Noble, I thought his ginger ale line was heaps funny.
  • I really enjoyed the pilot episode. It definitely grabbed me with the amount of outrageous activity that hopefully dives head first into teleportation, mind reading, and many more aspects of live that we only believe to be real in our imaginations. As for it being as good as X-Files? Who's really to tell? The ratings system? No. Was it as good as the last X-Files movie? Definitely. But in it's prime. I think it'll shoot for the stars but not reach where X-Files peaked at.

It wasn't what I thought it would be. I struggled to hang thru the last thirty minutes. I dug the commercial bumps and the short breaks. Joshua Jackson was ...okay.. I guess, I didn't understand how he went from being blackmailed to being totally on board with his looney ass father and everything going on. I'll give it one more episode. Bring on Life on Mars now!
  • Bob
It felt like a bastard child of csi and eureka in a rather dull way. The short preview of what's gonna come in the next episode just makes it seem more ridiculous than the show would appear to be at first glance.
  • Jason
I liked it, it was top notch. It was better than most things on TV and it has potential to be the next XFiles if not better. I think most of the people bitching about it seem to be trying to sound like critics but they come off sounding more like a-holes.
  • TheAverageDave
I'm watching it on Hulu right now. Charlie Conway is double-deeking all over the place.
