VOTD: The Ring (Rescored)

The Ring (Rescored)

The Pitch: /Film reader Chris B sends in this cinematic experiment where someone re-scored The Ring to give the film a totally different mood and tone. It’s amazing how much a score can affect a film sequence, even without editing tricks and out-of-contextuality that recut trailers have.

That monday night football music was fantasic.
  • Started off well, trailed a little in the middle but I did laugh out loud (notice I didn't use that hideous acronym....) right at the end - The Ring! Love it.

My favourite re-scoring (and sliiiiightly re-editing...) of a masterpiece still has to be that version of The Shining.

MUSIC OR NO MUSIC, STILL ONE OF THE SCARIEST THINGS A HUMAN BEING WILL EVER SEE.

SCARED THE S*T OUT OF ME, AND I WAS IN MY MID TWENTIES. STILL NEED TO SEE THE JAPANES VERSIONS.

    THANKS.

    "out-of-contextuality"

Webster is turning in his grave. I think you were somehow referring to "continuity", maybe?

At mid-point I just fell uninterested.

I really enjoyed it, both the beginning and the end were really effective. The ending piece made me feel like the girl was bad-a$$ and that the film wanted me to be rooting for her.

true story: when i first saw that film in theaters, my girlfriend at the time and i were so fucking scared we almost got up and left when this sequence started. holy shit that film is a scary one the first time around!
  • Yeah, that didn't even make sense. The opening part was looking kind of cool, then it just got awkward. Playing music that doesn't match what is happening doesn't necessarily change the meaning, especially when there was clearly some scary shit happening. It might have worked if the scene was a little more ambiguous. It felt like I was watching the TV on mute and listening to something else entirely.

Yes, it really didn't go together.
Although, I did actually enjoy the beginning, after that it seemed really pointless and corny.
  • So what are the rules now? I'm going to die within three days of seeing this unless I post this on my facebook account and kill all my friends? No wait... I have to kill myself or all my friends die... oh jeeze. My schedual is going to be so messed up today trying to figure out this moral morass. Darn you people for showing it to me. If my whole family ends up dead I'm really going to be cheesed off.

Very Funny, but i have not got around to seeing the ring yet, so i might be looking at it differently

Sorry Peter...maybe you felt like it gave the scene a totally different mood, but to me it just seemed out of place, and not in a unique new way either. I agree with you that a score can totally change the mood of a scene, but in this case it just wasn't very successful. I just became irritated. But hey, that's just me.

i thought tht made an amazing difference! was pretty good. when i saw this film at the cinema, the bit right towards the end and she jumps to real close to him well scared me. but with this score its jus comical!

    Yeah I'm with Nick O.

It started off interestingly, but the score changes were jarring and the visuals were made no less creepy.

I didn't really think it changed the mood, it just seemed extremely out of place and didn't make sense.

Not bad. I did like the end music piece.
