Yesterday was a semi-significant day in movie blogger history, comparative to the invention of the “Who Farted?” t-shirt. When TDK actor and beloved old geezer, Michael Caine, told MTV that a Warner Bros. exec had mentioned Johnny Depp for The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman for The Penguin in Batman 3 (the borderline fan-fic sequel, hence the title), enlightened movie bloggers posted, podcasted, Twittered, filmed and pissed in snow diatribes like: “Enough!” “We have standards!” “This is bullshit, don’t get me started on Big Willie for Capt!” “I’m not going to mention it, but I am mentioning it, clever, innit?” Fitting then that MTV  decided to ask Senor Hoffman what the deal is at the TIFF (not at the tres ghetto VMAs)…

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

Ha. But wait. Depp has said that while the villain rumor is categorically unfounded The Riddler would be “fun.” How about a little fun?

“I don’t know. I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it. I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest. [laughs]”

Orly? But what is the possibility that Hoffman then put on a monocle, scarfed a sardine and excitedly texted Cher and Depp and Nolan and DeVito with “They frickin’ bought it”? Twittle me that, because I’m a believer.

    @ Gerry Putler

Stay away from the pig latin, Jerry Butler. It's easier to overlook your comments that way.
  • This is a dirty shame, but I'm very confidant Nolan will choose a good actor for whomever the next villain is. Though Hoffman would/would have been cool.

I can totally picture Hoffman playing The Penguin in my mind and it's awesome. You should all really see it, it's awesome.

id really like to see Guy Pearce for the riddler. especially for him and nolan to work together again

    @ b-nasty

What do you mean? Find a way to look into your mind? HMMMMMMMM? I'm sure it's a scary place.
  • bp
I'd like to see hoffman do it. i thought heath was a bad choice at first and look how that turned out.

i like the guy pearce idea too.
  • @ Oi Vey

if you could find a way to watch the batman 3 of my mind, i'm sure you dig it. I've seen it 4 times in my head, and let me be the first to tell you Batman 3 totally tops TDK. The Batman 3 of my mind stars a 35 year old Paul McCartney (voiced by George Harrison) as Robin. It's also worth mentioning that the joker is played by McDonald's mascot Hamburgler, and that Batman is now a starfish-like creature from the 9th planet. It's a pretty kick ass.
  • Elpizo
He could do it. Just slap a couple of comics his way.
  • Frokid
I think James Gandolfini would make a better Penguin anyways.
  • digitalet
I've never liked the penguin as a villain. He's kinda lame. I mean, I've seen March of the Penguins, I know how this shit ends.

    Badly.

Thought long and hard about it and first it was Black Mask that I wanted to see but then again, I really don't wanna see another childhood flash back. However the similarities between him and another character struck me. I give you Bane.
Here's why. I really like what Nolan has done with Batman. That said. I wish they were a bit more Nolan. Where's the Hitchcockian twist and the end of the movie? Momento has it, The Prestige as well. I wanna see them go into year one (flashbacks) Batman goes toe to toe with King Snake. This way you could introduce several villains while your at it. Point is you give Batman the chance to piece the whole thing together. But by then it's too late. He never saw Bane coming. So who do you get? Loose the Venom thing. I'll settle for a genius /convict /escapee over a roid monkey any-day. Just Imagine somebody like Benico Del Toro in a suit and a black and red lucha mask.
    R-RATED 4 SHO!

iv'e never liked Penguin either, for some odd reason. It's like how i don't like Doc Ock; i don't have a reason for it though.

i think this just confirms the fact that the WB exec was telling caine what they plan to pitch to nolan. hopefully the pitch doesn't turn into a push. after what TDK just accomplished, if they are stupid enough to force the hand of a guy like chris nolan, then they deserve the disaster that awaits.

it all boils down to nolan saying he's doing 'the prisoner' next, and then just a long while of speculation and patience. again, IF he does it, i'd prefer 4-5 years before the film is in theaters. the anticipation/viral/rumors/etc for TDK was almost as kick-ass as the movie itself.

whenever i think of the penguin..i think of john leguizamo in that clown suit from the movie Spawn.funny how it made him look so short.if they use that technique..hell i guess anybody could play him.
  • Gajonka
he would be a great penguin and should cozy up to the idea...
  • Gajonka
THE PENGUIN IS THE BEST VILLIAN MAN, WAKE UP PEOPLE....
  • A Better Class of Criminal
I think everyone already knew it was just speculation.

IF the Penguin is used in any degree in the next film, PSH is the person in my mind best suited for the role. Though, I have thought a couple times of Paul Giamatti... but I'm not sold on that idea.

As for the Riddler, NOT Johnny Depp. It wouldn't work for me at all.
IDK, maybe Paul Bettany would work.
  • This is sloooowly getting out of hand if you ask me. I will believe any and all rumors --or "rumors"-- when they come from the mouth of Chris Nolan himself and no one else. Period.
  • razor1000
guys stop asking for who you wana see instead ask for what you wana see and i wana see another great nola batman movie that will defenetly escalate what was done in dark knight, things will probably get out of control in the third one with lots of criminals trying to follow the jokers example and some even trying to out the bats that sounds like a better idea to me anyways rather than oooh i wana see the ridller and catwoman and yada yada yada
  • Truman Show
    @ Better Class of Criminal..

Bettany was horrid as a bad guy in Firewall and the Da Vinci Code, but amazing in Ganster # 1..

I would really enjoy seeing him in the next Bat-film..
  • rudy
all speculation.....I like the idea Giamatti as the Penguin, dude was a pretty good villain in 'Shoot'em Up' and could definitely see him playing a twisted/evil Penguin than the crappy one Burton gave us.

I think the perfect villain for #3 would be The Hangman, his storyline would go along perfect with TDK
  • Would they both be great? Yup. Does this mean anything? Nope. I almost want Nolan to send out a press release saying that he'll decide on villains when he's good and ready and just tell everyone in the blogosphere to FO.
  • charles
Bullshit, if they show him a nice paycheck he'll WANT to do it.
  • Crispin Glover as The Riddler, Michael J Fox as The Riddler's son. Classic.
  • jokerkid
bob hoskins 4 penguin dont know him look it up
  • chris
    @jokerkid

i'm pretty sure most people know who bob hoskins is.
  • DAN
man, hoffman was so kickass in MI3 as a villain. i want to see him do it with a proper, gritty, character-driven thriller. haunt my dreams the way heath ledger does.
  • Bob
I don't want to see Cher, Depp, or DeVito in the 3rd installment. Let the fucking Casting Director or Nolan himself decide who's good for a role and not the fans. The fans were not excited about Ledger when casted, and now they can't imagine joker with out him. Now they want Depp etc and I can just assume after 3rd movie they'll be disappointed about their performance.

    WHAT ABOUT THIS:

Gotham's Wolrd-Famous ICEBERG LOUNGE presents 'Ladies Night' every thursday - featuring DJ TUX (ladies free all night):

    http://www.TheGothamTimes.com/issue2/page3.htm

Could be DJ TUX in fact Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin ???
  • Tobi
Michael Caine might have just been screwing around knowing all the buzz around Depp and Hoffman as Riddler and Penguin..he seems like a guy with a sense of humor. But something is indeed fishy (hehehe) about the whole situation. Perhaps they really are casted for the rolls...hopefully not Cher though...Angelina? Hell yeah.
  • @ Tobi

After seeing Wanted, I'd prefer if Angelina Jolie never made another movie.
  • Aindriú
DJ Tux. lol I doubt Oswald Cobblepot knows how to spin. The Cher and Depp rumors are getting pretty annoying. Cher is just horrible. Let her stay on the Vegas Strip and wither away. Depp is a great actor, but not for The Riddler. Tim Burton isn't directing Batman movies anymore. Besides that, the Frank Gorshin version of the Riddler has been done in a movie, I'm sure the brothers Nolan and David Goyer would go for a more realistic version.

Hoffman, however, would be a great choice if they decided to write the Penguin in. Considering none of us know if they've even put pen to paper on this yet. Cobblepot was always a twisted mirror image of Bruce Wayne's wealth and influence, and how he could've used it to further the crime and corruption of Gotham City instead of doing something about it. The Penguin is a great character, if done right.

    @ orange cinema

I pretty much agree with everything you've said. I'd imagine Nolan, if he were to do it, would be doing another film or two before another Batman. If you include those with the time it would take to make Batman 3 it'd have to be at least another 5 years before we get one. Which is fine with me. TDK was good enough for there not to be another sequel. Cos basically, we all know whatever comes next won't top TDK. It could be awesome, but it can't top it.

Penguin is a lame villain. Nolan could come up with a cool take on him but ultimately he's pretty lame. I'm still all for a The Dark Knight Returns approach, setting the story 10 or so years since TDK. A villain returns, possibly an older joker (therefore using an older actor) and Bats is forced back into action. It works, people!
  • awh that sucks o well
  • ad435
    Rose McGowan for Catwoman? thoughts?
  • ad435, I think I know what will be my last thought before I drift to sleep tonight... I don't think she'll do too well in the acting department, but oh my God, what an image...
  • i think hoffman would be an excellent penguin, even though I heard on the grapevine that kevin bacon was up for riddler, must disagree that penguin was a better villain than the riddler but it depends on how the riddler is portryed, a darker, edgier jim carey version would be intersting even though would be hard to top ledger as joker, let see, any suggestions?
  • Phantom Gremlin
what would seeing Johnny Depp as the Riddler accomplish? a more twisted and evil version of Willy Wonka? PLEASE NO! get someone new! I like the ventriloquist and Scarface personally...
