Fox Searchlight Wins The Wrestler

Anne Thompson is reporting that Fox Searchlight acquired U.S. rights to Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler for about $4 million. Lionsgate, Overture, Weinstein Co. and Sony were also said to be in the running. I’m just extremely happy that Sony Pictures Classics or TWC didn’t win the bid. The deal was finally closed at about 11 a.m. Monday. Searchlight is the best possible company to market this film for sure.

Apparently a huge oscar campaign for Mickey Rourke is part of the package. I’m guessing this probably means the film will hit theaters in late December to qualify, although an official announcement is forthcoming.

Really looking forward to this both as a wrestling fan and Aronofsky fan. Do you think even with the social stigma wrestling has on society that any Oscar contention will be a possibility?

Excellent news!!! Fox Searchlight has been under the radar this summer. Sony didn't know how to promote "The Wackness" and Paramount Vantage sells their stuff as Best Buy exclusives (just bitter about the Son Of Rambow release) so we know how they feel about their products.

    Great great great news!

I would be so happy if Rourke could get an Oscar nod for this, but being a fan of his work and following his career a little too nerdishly over the years I can't help thinking if this IS the film that gets Rourke the critical love he so long yearns for, he'll only go and f**k it up as always. This is the guy who came back from the cold after over a decade (in which his midlife crisis saw his face destroyed in the ring) and made "The Pledge" with Sean Penn before vanishing again thanks to some Tom Cruise bashing, got chummy with Tarantino and got himself a great part in "Sin City" but then followed it with the awful "Stormbreaker" and "Kill Shot" and then turned down Stuntman Mike in "Death Proof"! Rourke has a self destruct button and I really hope that if "The Wrestler" shows the world what he really can do and delivers on that early promise of "Rumblefish" and "Angel Heart" that we get a string of great work from him and not another implosion.
