The Wrestler Wins The Golden Lion in Venice

Yesterday we talked about how Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler was creating big buzz at the Venice Film Festival. The film has now been awarded the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion. This is bitter sweet for Aronofsky, whose 2006 film The Fountain premiered at Venice and was met with lackluster reviews. I’ll be seeing the film tomorrow night at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere, so look out for my review on Monday morning.

awesome peter, i'm jealous as hell that yer seeing this one. I'm curious how you'll end up ranking these 3 'indie' films:

    the wrestler
    the wackness
    american teen

those have been the top 3 indie films you've pushed so far this year. i've seen the wackness and it was beautiful, not AT or TW yet. i'm sure i'm forgetting some other 08' indie's, but these stand out.

i don't see how it is bittersweet....it's really just sweet.

Glad to see that Micky has again landed squarely where he always seems to be; under a well-deserved spotlight, as an all-too-often under-rated actor.

I've always liked him, and thought he was more recently awesome in Sin City. His small part in "Rainmaker" was also one that I thought stood out from the rest of the "stereo-typical" cast of characters.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

See you there, Peter! I'll be the guy waving.

Hoorah. Aronofsky was the most exciting director of our generation before he made The Fountain. It's great to have him back, I can't wait to see this & then the fighter & then wolf and cub.
  • Speaking as one who loved Requiem and hated Fountain...I'm cautiously optimistic for The Wrestler.
  • Hey Peter!

I actually saw your mug a few rows behind me at the screening. I would have said hello but I always feel like a tool approaching someone from out of the blue.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed The Wrestler as much as I did. Rourke's performance as Randy Ram might be one of my favorites of all time. I kept getting the Marlon Brando vibe from On the Waterfront.

And for the record The Fountain is one of my favorite films of the past decade. Give that baby time for people to appreciate it.

Mickey Rourke is a fantastic actor...underappreciated on occasion. But, dude, is he getting fugly. He was actually better looking in the Marv make-up in Sin City. Yikes!

  • Jbiza
Volvo, because they don't understand it.
