Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival to promote Miracle at St. Anna, Spike Lee has confirmed that plans for a sequel to his 2006 film Inside Man are in motion, with Terry George in negotiations to write the script. Lee plans on returning to direct the sequel, tentatively and creatively titled Inside Man 2. Inside Man was scriptwriter Russell Gerwitz’s first-ever feature-length script, and I thought he and Lee did a damn good job at crafting a gripping bank caper (the next movie you may see featuring Gerwitz’s work is Righteous Kill). Terry George has written critically acclaimed films such as In the Name of the Father and Hotel Rwanda. Undoubtedly, a collaboration between George and Lee for Inside Man 2 will continue to lend the heist film genre some more credibility and (hopefully) some more commercial success, just as the first film did.

According to Lee, the movie may feature the same characters from Inside Man, with Denzel Washington and Clive Owen reportedly interested in reprising their roles. The new film would develop their relationship further, but in a different standoff-like situation.

Discuss: What robbery/heist scenario can you imagine that would top the first film?

Anything...talk about a mediocre movie. "They are all Nazis so robbing them was worth it." Lame.
  • Blackstar
"They are all... what?" ... ? I think Brian here needs to put down the glass Strawberry Milk and get ready for bed. It's past his bedtime.

Inside Man was great film. Very well written and very well acted by the cast. I just don't see the point about making a sequel for a story that does not need one and more than likely, will simply diminish the image of the original. If George and Lee want to get together and make a heist movie, great. I look forward to it. I just don't see the point in hitching wagons to an already established quality film that stands perfectly well by itself. Leave it be. The world has too many sequels in it already. Time for something more original.

I liked Inside Man. It was very solid, but I did think the whole twist was overhyped. It didn't blow me away or fool me like I was led to believe.

However judging on how bad Righteous Kill is, perhaps it's best that Gerwitz backed off this one.

Are people missing the original was to go beyond just a bank heist? That there are plenty of crazy stereotypes people still rely on in their day-to-day lives?

The cop who got shot by a ni-ni-little black kid, the Sikh who was called a terrorist, a detective accused of taking a bribe, guilty "because he's black," two male detectives who can't focus on an interviewee because she's busty, etc.

Lee makes 'isms a large part of the stories he shoots, I think a sequel would be good as long as his racial/sexist/agism dynamics stay intact.

I loved inside man and this sequel seems like a good idea. Hopefully Clive Owens does come back to do his role.

I like Inside Man for what it was -- a little heist/caper film. Everyone hit their notes well and the film is rewatchable whenever HBO deems to put it on.

A sequel, however, would be a bridge too far for me. The story was neatly wrapped up. Bringing them back for another heist would feel weak and lame -- unless somehow Denzel managed to win this time and capture Clive Owen (which can't happen because you've established Owen as the smartest guy around).
  • Prophecy_Projectz
    Agreed with BFFRedo here.

Inside Man to me was one of the top 3 films of 2006 and I enjoyed it immensley and it was good to see Spike Lee have a legitamite box office hit with it, but I just dont see it as a film that warrants a sequel considering everything was so neatly put together. I would however like to see Owen/Denzel and Spike working on another project together.
  • Oi Vey
it feels like the most random sequel ever.
  • Mr. B
As much as I would like to see the Steve, Stevo, Stevie, Steven, etc. Team pull another heist with Denzel there. I can't help but think this would fail as miserably as Ocean's 12.
They would need to find another compelling situation that would bring them all back for some reason.
Perhaps Owen's character himself becomes a hostage in some crisis and becomes Denzel's "inside man" to thwart the hostage takers and then of course Owen's character would get away with the precious items.
And before y'all tell me, I know it sounds lame.

All I remember about this movie is someone calls Jodie Foster a magnificent cunt.
  • CLS
Clive Owen's character is lured out of retirement to execute a brilliantly complex plan to boost an old accomplice out of jail. Call it OUTSIDE MAN!
  • Brian
The twist in this movie sucked.

I don't know how anybody could dislike Inside Man, or so a sequel as being completely necessary. The film doesn't end on a complete note, and there are tons of ways to utilize both Washington's and Owen's characters. Personally, I can't wait for it. Do wish Gerwitz was involved though--his Inside Man script was far better than I think anybody expected it to be.

I loved inside man, and i think a sequel with both Denzel and Clive could be fantastic. I think the two characters had a connection that they could build on for another movie. i like the idea of a trilogy where Clive does a couple more heists with Denzel as a negotiator, learning from each other and building a relationship, and eventually Denzel gets his man..or lets him go.. or something. I think it could be good.
  • YoungZe
I'm not sure, the first one was okay but with all it's unnecessary racist subtext that really messed up the movie for me it's lost a lotta credits. If Lee would be less involved in this one i bet it would be so much better.
  • Darrell
    Looking forward to it!

You could take the easy route out and go for the ever corrupt police department. Clive Owen infiltrates and gets Denzel Washington to be his inside man.
  • Crusher Creel
Denzel, Clive and Spike together again = Yes.
Sequel to Inside Man = No.
  • Maybe Clive could take Denzel hostage and use his knowledge against whatever negotiator the SWAT employs...sort of like "The Negotiator".
  • Jamie
I didn't like Lee's direction in this. I loved the script. I am intrigued where they go from the first film.

Also, "This ain't no bank robbery!"

    Greatest Denzel line ever?
  • Adri
    I LOVE CLIVE OWEN!
  • robert
They wouldn't be abel to pull off a srqeul but, if they made it placed before the hiest it could work. They could show some background info and the planning and reasoning.
