We first heard of the possibility of an Arrested Development movie about eight months ago, when Jeffrey Tambor and Jason Bateman confirmed that talks for the film were in progress. Then this past June, Bateman discussed the film with MTV, saying:

We all want to do it. All the actors want to do it, the writers want to do it, and the boss wants to do it. And they are working on making a deal, probably as we speak. But it’s a long, sort of drawn-out, complicated business process. ‘Arrested Development’ is such a specific tone, it doesn’t lend itself to mass appeal, as played out by the fact that it’s canceled. So it has to be done for a price. They can’t spend the money they spent on ‘Hancock.’

Bateman also said that Hurwitz was developing a story that “would not be just simply the equivalent of four episodes back to back to back. It’s actually something that would be specific to the medium of film.”

However, in a recent interview with the National Post to promote Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Michael Cera was asked about the status of the movie. According to the Post, Cera “hasn’t heard of any plans for an Arrested Development film.” Cera went on to say:

I don’t think I would want to see a movie of the series if I was a fan, anyway…And I don’t really see a need for it if you can get the three seasons on DVD.

It’s possible that Cera was never involved in early talks or wasn’t going to be in the movie at all, but that would seem to contradict Bateman’s comment about everyone being on board. It seems UNlikely to me that Cera wouldn be interested in participating in a film whose TV predecessor helped propel him to stardom, so if he is unaware of plans then things really might not be as far along as we’d hoped. [sorry for the typo - now fixed in bold]

Aside from that, it’s clear that Michael Cera is an extraordinarily poor judge of the rabidness of Arrested Development fans, who continuously demand more of their favorite sitcom of all time in whatever form possible. I’m a huge fan and evangelist of the show and I was incredibly excited when the possibility of a movie first hit the web. However, I feel like the longer this protracted process takes, the more likely that the collective enthusiasm behind an Arrested Development film will wane. This new info from Cera certainly doesn’t raise my hopes that the film will happen anytime soon.

Discuss: Are Arrested Development fans still interested in seeing an AD movie? Or is it possible to have too much of a good thing?

Couldn't another season of the show find a home somewhere, HBO? It would be unheard of in TV history...but perhaps more appropriate than a film (which could be awesome, although hard to pull off).
  • Steelo
George Michael might be off to college
  • @Julia

According to my memory, HBO wasn't interested in Arrested Development. Showtime made the offer for 2 shortened seasons, but the lack of money offered and the stress involved in continuing a show that had always on the verge of cancellation led Hurwitz to pull the plug.
  • I'm torn. I truly loved the show, and I definitely can relate to that rabid feeling in me that just wants more AD! There's so much crap on TV these days, and AD was like a breath of fresh air ... when it was ON the air.

But a movie? I was initially excited with all the news, but I mean season 3 ended in a way that kind brought closure to the series. I long for another show like that, but let's get real: Fox doesn't care about quality, they care about ratings, just like all the networks.

And Michael Cera sounds like a complete fool. I've been a fan of his since AD, and have supported him through his work on clarkandmichael.com and all his other films... but what he said really bothers me.

Before AD, he was a nobody. Now he's a guy that can afford a $4000 suit and not give a shit about a film based on a show that catapulted his career? C'MON!
  • Fred
umm, he's totally aware. do some googling.
  • Dustin
if they don't make this movie I will commit hari kari, but not until I find Micheal Cera and bitch-slap him back to reality.
  • Christine
Fuck you, Cera. An AD movie would be AWESOME.
  • Oops, forgot to Google. That reminds me, I should get Chrome too.
  • MonkeyMafia
I'm a total ADdict; I am on my 74th time watching the entire series (no foolin' I usually watch 2 episodes a day min) and I spread the gospel every chance I get and I usually convert someone once every two weeks. I see David Cross all the time at the dog park and as nice as he is I don't have the nerve to geek out and ask about the AD movie or even call my dog by her proper name ("Maeby", of course) when I see him.

Seriously though, get this F-ING movie made and stop this, "only works as a TV series" BS; have faith in our lord and savior (Hurwitz) that He knows how to construct an extended narrative.

It's only too much of a good thing, if that very thing had enough time to gel and deal with itself long enough. Having an obvious start and even finish. I always felt it got cut very short, right as the characters began to expand.

Much like Deadwood and Carnivale. If the movie is done right, then I'm for it.
  • Yes, we all want an AD movie...
  • Yes, I want to see it. No, I don't think it will happen.
  • adam
uh, michael cera makes his money with deadpan. just something to consider.

    durr.
  • Gajonka
that would be terrible, becuase the show sucked.

    Thanks.
  • Take it from a kid still in college: Arrested Development fans are growing in number. When the show was on the air, I had one other friend who watched it. Now I'm hard-pressed to think of someone I know who ISN'T a fan.

MAEBY A MOVIE MAEBY A MOVIE!

fuck you michael cera. this thing needs to happen.
  • J Productions
I love AD. Favorite show of all time. I'm really excited at the idea of a movie, but at the same time I'm not too sure. Idk how they will pull of the story for a movie, but if they make it I'll trust they know what they are doing. But I can't get rid of that nagging feeling that it'll end up like Family Guy (which was crap once it was revived) or like Futurama (which is good, but just not as good as it could be).

Gajonka doesn't know what the fuck.

An AD movie could be huge. Every person who gets my DVD seasons in their hands wonders why it's not on the air to which I reply,"Because fucking losers like you don't watch TV when it's on television." Then I cry myself to sleep in my denim shorts.
  • melvin still
    heyyyyy big brother

I'm so mad at Cera, this is obviously code for him saying he's a big star right now and doesn't want to do it.

Bateman once before was quoted as saying that "the adults" were all on board with a movie, meaning either Cera or the chick who played Maybe were holding things up (one guess there).

He'd better not forget where he came from, especially when Infinite Playlist bombs.

Well i didnt want a movie when i first heard about it just cause movies from tv shows have a tendency to suck. They just dont have that charm. Then I finished all 3 seasons and I wanted more and I'd be really happy to just have something to laugh at again.

    STEVE HOLT!
  • cc
    fuck u cera!

you obviously are SO out of touch with your AD fans!

a AD movie would seriously be the best thing. I can do without George Micheal actually. He was rather boring anyway. The only good thing about his was the ever amazing Anne!
  • Rachel Summers
this is ALWAYS relative to my interests
  • Tommy
He must be kidding to say there's no audience. I'm in Wee Britain, and I get a kick of joy when I ask people what their favourite comedies are when I find AD at or the top of their list.
When I got into the show in 2005, so few people had heard of it. Nowadays everyone talks about it, it's becoming pretty high-profile.

Michael Cera/anyone listening: Please make this movie. I think you'll be blown... away by how much of an audience this show has nowadays, with people kicking themselves for not knowing about it when it was on air (thanks to some awful marketing). Even those who are yet to see it know it by reputation.

A film will be fantastic. Please make it happen! Now that I've heard it's a strong possibility I'll be heartbroken it if it doesn't come to pass.

Sincerely, Tom "watched the series through five times" Bradley.
  • Daniel M
    Movie? YES PLEASE
  • Evan
First off to the person(s) who did not find the show funny obviously are one of those folks who find dane cook hilarious and were not smart enough get the jokes. Secondly who WOULDN'T want to see an AD movie? Cera needs to show a little respect to the show that boosted his career! Long LIVE Arrested Development!!!
  • mike
although i was skeptical about how they would use george michael based on his real life maturing since the series ended, my heart is shattered as i sit here in front of my computer in my bluth frozen banana shirt preparing for my ritual am/pm arrested development session to rise in the morning and rest in the evening.
  • Shakey-Lo
there is still a typo in the article - you write "wouldn be interested"... I need to know if thats missing a T or has one extra N!
  • pete (original)
need more arrested development. no matter what. mikey cera, come on!
  • Dave
YES PLEASE, make a movie! I'll see it once because I love the show, twice to see the jokes I missed first time round, and a third time to show my love for the show and to give more money to the producers... Not that money will be a problem, as I know a good 10/15 people who have got into the show recently and will be there as well.
  • Kim
    Michael Cera SUCKS!!!!!!

He obviously thinks he's a big Hollywood star now and therefore is trying to get as far away from his roots as possible. Don't forget about your faithful AD fans George Michael!!! If it wasn't for Arrested Development, you would be nowhere, PAL.

    COME ON!!!
  • Joe
Let's kill Michael Cera (kidding, of course).
