Appaloosa Movie Posters

Four stark profile posters for Ed Harris’s revival Western, Appaloosa, have popped up at IMP Awards. The film reunites Harris with his A History of Violence co-star Viggo Mortensen for a tale of “two friends hired to police a small town that is suffering under the rule of a rancher find their job complicated by the arrival of a young widow.” The widow is played by Renee Zellweger, and the antagonist by Jeremy Irons, who seems like a inspired choice for this type of genre and setting.

Harris’s previous film, the 2001 biopic Pollock, garnered two Oscar noms including Best Actor for his performance. Opening this October, early buzz for Appaloosa from the TIFF is mixed, with disappointed comparisons to recent feted Westerns like The Proposition and 3:10 to Yuma.  We’ve included the other two posters after the jump, as well as the original one-sheet released earlier this year. And for Western buffs, the film is an adaptation of Robert Parker’s novel, not a remake of Marlon Brando’s The Appaloosa (1966). Factoid: the title refers to a breed of horse.

Discuss: With this cast, where do you expect Appaloosa to fall in comparison to recent Westerns?

Ed Harris would be a fitting actor if they ever plan on doing a Punisher MAX movie.
  • Josh
Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are going to rock this movie. Excellent actors.

I am not completely sold on this one, but I will check it out. I have to give some love to those genres that are dying out. It is a shame there aren't more westerns made these days, but it is a sign of the times.

The only cast member that makes me leery is Renee. I don't find her all that "cute" and her lemon face smile from the massive amount of botox makes me cringe.

as far as recent westerns go, i feel this will be as good as 3 burials for melquiades (even though that was a modern tale), but nowehre near as legit as unforgiven. this is my favorite genre, so i might be bais as i love em all.

also, you take away the facial hair & get a better hat, and viggo puts in his best roland deschain pose.

This is going to be incredible. Hollywood has needed a kickass Western for quite some time.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Almost every modern western has sucked in comparison to the classics. But Viggo Mortenson, Ed Harris, and Jeremy Irons sounds like a promising cast.
It’s a wait and see for me.

Why does Renee Zellweger always make me annoyed? I don't see here in a period piece. Didn't she try to speak with an Irish accent in some film recently?

Ugh. Why couldn't they find a hot unknown actress?
  • Goobity
@ J.D. : I agree. She hasn't done anything decent since her debut as Starlene Jones in 'Love and a .45'

I don't get her casting at all.

The Proposition was alright. 3:10 to Yuma had its moments but the last 20 minutes were pitiful. Hell, Open Range was better than 3:10 to Yuma. Appaloosa deserves props for Irons, but Zellweger? How is she still in the movies? I just saw Cold Mountain the other day, and she's laughable in that. She's gonna derail this one all by herself.

    Maybe I'll netflix it.

Ed Harris would make a good Roland for Dark Tower Movie(s).
    Jeremy Irons rocks socks.

At first glance, the posters reminded me of Clint Eastwood and Daniel Day Lewis.

The Renee Zellweger poster reminds me of Miss Potter promotional images. The posters look really interesting though.

O.K. I'll admit, I'm hooked by just looking at the posters. Badass.
  • Pretty kick-ass cast with Viggo, Ed Harris and Jeremey Irons. I hate Renee Zellweger and her squish face, but the movie looks pretty good. Gotta love a good western!
  • JB
I thought Zellweger was decent in Cinderella Man. Maybe she can pull through in this one...

two floating heads is way better than one giant floating head, and two menacing floating heads framing a small female is even better!

    this movie will be great.
Ed Harris is an underrated actor.

    @ all

I'm enjoying the enthusiasm here for this one. Maybe it'll be a sleeper hit. And I totes agree about Zellweger. She's too oft the dealbreaker.
  • w smith
HELL yes.... that's what I'm talking about. Also not a Rene Zellweger fan, but that shouldn't be a problem with the rest of this ass kicking cast going on. Ed Harris looks remarkably like Clint Eastwood in that pic. And Viggo just looks like a freaking bad ass.
  • igroveman
I thought the last twenty minutes of 3:10 to Yuma were brilliant. I'm a Western fanatic, I'll go see this in the theater unless it is getting less than 20% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Agent J
Shell Yeah!! Jeremy Irons? This movie just rose up to kickas$...Renee Zellwigga? This movie just got knocked down to suckfest...Viggo & Ed Harris? This movie might not suck that bad until "Wigga" comes back on.
  • if it's better than hidalgo, i'm there.

i don't know bout zellweger, tho. could be the weakest link.
  • Lenny
    So pumped for this.
Not a big western fan but when a good one comes along you know it.
    This is gonna be one!
  • Joe
A great book by Robert B Parker! I hope they do it justice.. with this cast I'm sure it will be a good movie
