Gus Van Sant’s Milk Movie Trailer

After crafting the critically acclaimed Paranoid Park, director Gus Van Sant now seems poised to follow it up with yet another audacious and powerful film. The trailer for Van Sant’s Milk debuted on Apple today and it masterfully sets up some of the main conflicts of the film (namely, the social climate in the late 1970s, Harvey Milk’s conflict with city supervisor Dan White, and the threats to Milk’s life). The trailer also gives us glimpses of some of the film’s main performances. Along with an unrecognizable Emile Hirsch, Sean Penn looks to give an understated performance as the titular character and Brolin continues his unstoppable career revival by playing White (does anyone remember when Brolin was still cavorting around in films like Hollow Man? I do *shudder*).

Harvey Milk was a gay rights activist and a San Francisco city supervisor, widely regarded as the first openly gay man elected to any political office in America. He was the subject of the 1984 documentary The Times of Harvey Milk, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Milk will be the first non-documentary film based on his life.

As always, feel free to leave your thoughts about the trailer in the comments below. Milk hits theaters on November 26th 2008.

  • This looks like an amazing movie.

i was worried about penn going over the top, but he does reign it in, and this looks like its gonna be a beautiful film.
  • AHAHAHAHAHAH
As a straight native-San Franciscan, that looks pretty dang good. Sean Penn and just about everyone else in that trailer look like they are in full acting force. And it's always awesome to see real SF in any movie.
  • lookin good
  • Sean Penn gets another Oscar nod. The rest of the movie, we'll see...
  • Domino
Think the trailer looks good, really strong young supporting cast (Franco, Hirst, Luna) and I'm always looking for more good films shot in San Francisco.
  • Bob
    looks like a good movie
  • Adam
I'm not sure about this one- it doesn't seem that, beyond Penn's theatrics, there's much to it. We'll see when it comes out, but I'm not on board based on that particular trailer.
  • mash
    that looks fantastic
  • Sean
    this is gonna be sweet
  • Shocking, a movie that looks like it will paint a real picture of homosexuality. As a gay man, I really hope this movie is good. You know, as opposed to shit.
  • Dave
    This looks fucking amazing.
  • andy
good trailer i guess....cant wait till watchmen! (hopefully march) and HARRY POTTER. FUCK YOU WARNERS. FUCK YOU TOO, TWILIGHT.
  • Ryan
    Looks great.
I'll see it just for the supporting cast.
  • Bill
fantastic trailer. made my excitement for this film go from "meh" to "YEAH!"
  • Superman
    Got... No, too easy.
  • Gary
It looks like another oscar nomination for Penn.
  • Antibodies
I think this might be the first Sean Penn movie I'd be looking foreword too. Although a lot of that might have to do with the really good cast.
  • T.J.
This looks great. Way better than I think Bryan Singer's project about Harvey Milk "The Mayor of Castro Street" would have been.
  • BicentennialHoosier
    I Believe in Harvey Milk.
  • J.D.
It'll happen just like it always does: hardly anyone will go see it, and the leftists in the Oscar Academy will nominate it for an award; probably for 'best picture.'

    That's my prediction.
  • kyleelyk
im surprised this movie hasnt been made yet.. im really glad it finally is. harvey milk was a very intresting person with an intersting story. maybe after this movie comes out it will change the way a lot of people view the gay community. i mean look at the trailer... back in the early late 70's people were hating on gays pretty harsh, and now look - it is now legal in california to marry sombody of the same sex...if we can go from that to this in 30 years im looking forward to the next thirty years.
i cant believe thats jeff spacolli by the way hahaha..
  • Matt
Now that's a fucking trailer. Best one I've seen in a while by a mile.
  • eldiablito
Definitely looks like a fantastic movie. I just wish I would have drove up to S.F. to see the set. This is one I'm anxiously waiting to see.
  • I wanted Simple Jack 2 : Electric Bugaloo
  • cellchild
    Really powerfull trailer. Nice job!
  • Ian
Gus van Sant is an incredible and has time and time again shown his ability to direct. This trailer tells me that Sant could go all out, get the awards, the praise, and even the box office top spot. And with a cast like that where can you go wrong.

The pacing of the trailer has you in chills whenever the actors names start appearing. The text across the screen is also very well done, going from "nineteen" to "'78" subtle changes like that amuse me.
  • menotrouble
this looks really impressive. wasn't on top of my list, but is now. agree with others here: that's what a trailer should do to you: make you want to see the movie.
  • Go
i wasn't really looking forward to this, but that trailer changed my mind.
  • bart
Sean Penn will probably get an oscar nomination for this...
  • it looks so damn amazing.
  • Mikey M
Looks wonderful. I have been looking forward to this since they were filming here about 6 months ago in San Francisco. Amazing how they de-aged the Castro and rest of the city for this movie.
  • Sean Penn finally comes out of the closet.

Waste of a budget on this crap
  • OMG It's Russell Crowe
Anyone not familiar with the story should definitely check out the '84 documentary.
  • Not Impressed
Am I the only one that thinks Sean Penn is acting a little "I Am Sam" in this? Except he didn't go full retard - so maybe he'll get the award. In all seriousness, he does some of the exact same movements with his hands, and the slight lisp, and awkward smile. Anyways... the trailer was decent, but I can't say I'm blown away. Sorry.
  • bab3a
That was really amazing. I didn't know a lot about it gong into this viewing, but I am really excited for this now.
  • Christain K
Looks good... Does anyone know if the movie will include the trial and White Riots?
  • Oi Vey
    what an awesome trailer.
  • Elissa
I also have a feeling that the Academy will be all over this. Then, at the last minute, they'll give the award to some undeserving, overrated, overacted PILE OF STEAMING CRAP like Crash. Sorry, but I completely loathe that movie. Anyway, Milk looks magical and I can't wait to see it.
  • Pentarix
    Great trailer, very promising!
  • lujs
    That trailer is awesome
  • ol cannon
Having just seen the trailer today - which I thought was very well done. Let's see what the film will do after it opens in November.
  • Coasterbear
It looks like Sean Penn just keeps getting more and more progressive in his movie carreer. I never was really crazy about his early films but this man has become one hell of an actor over the years! And taking on the role of Harvey Milk, well I never would have expected it from him. Kudos Sean for taking on a role such as this! I'll be in the theater the day it opens. The trailer is excellent and only made me want to see it more!
    Bravo
  • very interesting movie...love it!!!
  • Jutilda
It certainly swept the Oscar announcements this morning.
