Aykroyd on Ghostbusters 3

In a recent interview with EOnline, Dan Aykroyd was asked about the status of Ghostbusters 3. Aykroyd responded:

Well, y’know, two sharp young writers are purported to be writing the sequel, the third movie now. If I could interest Seth [Rogen] and Judd [Apatow] to be part of it, that would be an absolute dream.

Given Aykroyd’s relationship with the franchise, it’s nearly impossible that he wouldn’t know for certain exactly what is going on with the script, so it’s quite plausible that a script is currently in the works as he says. As for the involvement of Rogen and Apatow, capitalizing on the current popularity of the Apatow crew seems like it might be a good way to both placate longtime fans as to the quality of a new film, and also introduce the franchise to a new generation of viewers. Of course, all of this is the definition of “speculative,” but it feels like there might just be some truth to it.

Discuss: What do you guys think of a new Ghostbusters with the Apatow crew? Who would like to see cast in Ghostbusters 3?

(Thanks to /Film reader SINProductions for the tip!)

  • Oh Blair
I would love it, I would love it.

I guess i would love it.
  • krackajap
An Apatow version of Ghostbusters? If Apatow made the first Ghostbusters, the Staypuff Marshmallow Man would have had a gigantic penis and would have probably smashed a bunch of cars with it.
  • just thinking out loud here, but wouldn't it be awesome if Aykroyd were trying to put some Michael Bay esque misleading rumors out there by claiming he's hoping to interest Rogen, when really, the two unnamed writers are Seth Rogen and Even Goldberg? Anyone?
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    Do it... Do it naugh!
  • Christine
    YES. GOD, YES.
  • gah
wow, so there actually was some truth to that.
  • Love Aykroyd, but he's been jerking our chain for years now.

No Venkman = no Ghostbusters for me. No thank ya.
  • Christopher Marc
I've heard this before and it makes sense...the second city/snl guys in the originals have a lot in common with the Apatow crew...they spoke for their generation and Rogen/others do as well for our generation...I just hope Apatow doesn't make a mistake of casting Will Farrell...

I could see the new group being Seth Rogen, John C. Riley, Paul Rudd, Jason Segal and Craig Robinson...will smaller roles for James Franco, Jonah Hill and Danny Mcbride...with cameos from Weaver, Hudson, Bill Murry, Aykroyd, Ramis, ...too bad Rick Moranis retired

Funny note: Aykroyd opened a winery not too far from my house in the Niagara area...lol.. no joke
  • JP Dyno
    Would be awesome.
That photoshop looked perfect and aslong as akroyd is involved, Its got my thumbs up.
  • REAL6
Apatow crew are FUCKING CORNBALLS. Dont fucking ruin it!!!!

Have all 4 of the original cast man!!!
  • Christopher Marc
    @REAL6

That would be hard considering that Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd can stand each other....I don't think there is enough money to get them to work together again...The only way to see a new Ghostbusters film is with a new cast
  • Dustin
I've got to say I like Christopher Marc's casting, I immediately thought of Craig Robinson as well.
  • B4tS
    great idea!!!!!!

you know back a few years from now there's ghostbuster animated show called EXTREME GHOSTBUSTER.
i really think they should developed it. that way new cast will involved with the original cast, a whole knew ghostbuster without rebooting the original which i think as a masterpiece.
well, i guess we'll see then...........
  • M&Co
Bring it to the small screen. HBO needs a new comedy.
  • orange cinema
for me, it'd have to have all original 4 members in roles bigger than just cameos. the apatow crew could be a cool way to pass the torch, but only if they were side players to the original cast.

and i think chris marc is way off that they hate each other, didn't we just read E3 interviews of them all (except rick moranis) getting together for voice work on the VG? i haven't heard that they are fighting at all.
  • Presto117
    @christopher marc

i wouldn't be so sure of that....

all 4 were eager to do the ghostbusters video game, and they're all in it with their likenesses/voices.

don't really see why they wouldn't wanna make more money with a new movie.
  • Captain Awesome
I'll think about it when they get Bill Murray on board, and the rest of the original cast. If it has neither of these people...

    They can go fuck themselves.

    Sorry, I don't want some re-imagined, re-casted, shit.
  • Brandon
Yeah, agreed. If you have a perfect idea, an idea that is perfect in every way, DON'T GET CREATIVE! Creativity sucks. All you're going to do is COMPROMISE the integrity or the strength of the original idea; It's just like the new PEPSI globe; it was such a strong logo for so long, and now changing it is the same way as saying they no longer have faith in the PEPSI globe, it wasn't strong enough to endure the test of time. Well, you know, maybe I don't want to buy a product from a company who has a weak faith in their design. Maybe I want to buy from a company who says, we have the best logo, the best taste, hands down, no compromise. When you compromise, you just discredit the work you've done.. It's an INSULT. That's all you do. No new PEPSI logo. No new GHOSTBUSTERS.
  • Super A.J.
Dream come true. Who better to star in the sequel than the Apatow crew?!!?! I LOVE Ghostbusters. I would probably lose my mind if Seth and Paul Rudd and Jonah and such were the new Ghostbusters! (in a good way of course)
  • Christopher Marc
    @Presto117

They never had contact during the "voice" acting for the video game..they did their sets without others in the room, so if you like cartoons or a CGI movie..that's what you're going to end up getting if you want the original cast to interact with each other on screen...there are many articles backing up the fact they will never have the original cast back..sorry that's just a fact
  • Ghost
I really would prefer the Apatow crew to stay far away. I'm getting tired of them being all over the place. Let the originals do it or let them find someone else. There's more comedic actors out there then just the Apatows.
  • MrMad2001
I have seen it, It was great.
  • Pentarix
Fuck Apatow and his shit crew. If they touched this franchise it would be an atrocity.
  • South Texas Terror
Cameo only for rogappatow. Im gonna be pissed if they strap on a proton pack. If there is a torch pass let it come at the end of the movie.
  • DRM
I kinda like the Apatow crew, and Seth specifically has been great in everything I've seen him in. Even if he does mostly play himself. I think however that they'd have to follow suit with the video game by getting Akroyd and Ramis to do the script.

But the more that I think about it the Apatow crew is probably ill fitted to this kind of work. I honestly think that Simon Pegg and Co. would be a better approach to this kind of movie. They'd probably be able to ground some of those crazy ideas of Akroyd's in reality much like Ramis did.

Now I really want to see that movie.
  • marz
the crew from the 40 year old virgin would be perfect but would it be a third film...or a reboot, either way,i'm there.and while they're at it,what about doing gremlins?
  • Greeg
I want it now, with Aykroyd, Murray, the Apatow crew, Rick Moranis and written by Kevin Smith.
  • brian
The only way a Ghostbusters sequel will work is with the original cast. It'd even be a pretty cool angle now that they are a whole lot older. I think if the Apatow crew took this on it'd be a big mistake. Ghostbusters isn't their kind of humour. Especially if it was a PG sort of deal which I'd assume it would be.
  • orange cinema
    @ christopher marc

my google search isn't giving me any of those articles, can you tell me which magazines this fued was discussed in? thanks
  • Bilobatedtimmo
I'm not sure how i feel about this, I don't want Ghostbusters turning into Superbad or 40 Year Old Virgin. Dont get me wrong, I love those movies, but I cant see that style of humor blending well with ghostbusters.

And they better not change the theam song.
  • Tatiana
Why not just do a ghost movie instead of making it a "Ghostbusters" movie? (I had the same feeling about "The Lost Boys: The Tribe." If they had just made it a vampire movie and not tried to link it up with the previous one, it might actually have stood on its own a little better.)
  • REAL6
    Christopher Marc:

I agree with you alittle but to me these guys are burning out fast...

I perfer the old original cast. I know they dont get along but in the past people have got back together for the greater good ;)

Look at Indy, Rambo, Die Hard, ETC.

SO we need the old school to show these young assholes how to make a movie.

    LETS GO SCHWARZENEGGER!!!!
  • Hendo
I don't know... I have a hard time picturing a Ghostbusters movie full of weed, tit, and fart jokes....
  • Mikey M
Tired of Rogan and his writing. Apatov I do approve of just as long as he is hands on with this.
Would be great to get the whole cast back. Rick? Bill?
  • Superman
I hope in gb 3 manhattan instelf becomes huge ghost. If you're gonna go out strong that's the way to do it.
  • Jonathan
Paul rudd as venkman, Rogen as Stanz, Egon is the wild card but, Winston is definitely Craig Robinson. Who's everyones pick for Egon?
  • Steven Seagal's Right Hand
this would rule only if they do it the right way...

have michael keaton play all the ghostbusters
  • &E B.
This is horrible, horrible news. Apatow's a fuckin over popular fad. God I hate it. God, why? Just leave ghostbusters alone and keep making your own shitty stoner movies, you fuckin turd.
  • jamie
no, the Apatow drug and brew crew is the biggest joke at the moment

stay the hell away from good comedy movies that don't solely revolve around unfunny situations involving drugs and sex
  • griffty
I think Eddie Murphy should play all the ghostbusters, He can't be in a film anymore without being everyone lol. An Apatow crew film can work, it would need the input of some of the original writers though, otherwise the humor the first films are famous for will be lost, i can't imagine the Apatow crew coming up with a script with the suttle references and comedy apparent in the first film without help from Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Combined they could make a fantastic film.
  • Christopher
I dont wanna see anyone except the original cast!!! Anyone else in the movie would ruin Ghostbusters
  • DianePgh
In my opinion, Bill Murray seems to be very off these days when if comes to making films. I do have to agree about all three of them, Ramis, Akroyd and Murray having bad karma with one another. Although it would be nice to see all three of them together again but it seems merely impossible. I do like Akroyds idea about the movie from what I have googled. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if this really happens. One of the articles I read was Akroyd wanting Ben Stiller in the movie. Now, that scares me. If Stiller is going to be in this movie I surely won't go see it. It's like putting Adam Sandler in a Nightmare on Elm St movie, no offense.
  • Brandon
I agree with all of those who say the Apatow thing wouldn't be a good idea. Apatow is fantastic at what he does, but what made Ghostbusters amazing was its wit and situational comedy, no references to drug use, no nudity, no extreme cursing. Those things are all good in Apatow movies, but it's just not right for Ghostbusters.
  • I WOULD LOVE A THIRD MOVIE, WE HAVE PEOPLE GOING NUTS OVER SPECTORS BECAUSE THERE IS NO MORE GHOSTBUSTERS. IF DAN DID DO ANOTHER MOVIE, I WISH SPECTORS COULD DO A GUEST APPEARANCE IN IT. WE HAVE OUR OWN GHOST BUSTING TYPE FUNCTIONAL VEHICAL AND ITS INSANE HOW MANY GHOSTS WE CATCH! PEOPLE LOVE US. SO YES! PLEASE! DO ANOTHER GHOSTBUSTERS MOVIE, JUST HOPE THE WRITERS ARE SMART ENOUGH TO MAKE SURE THEY PAY RESPECT TO THE ORIGANAL CAST OF WRITTEN CHARACTERS BEFORE THE WAND IS PASSED ON TO A NEW TEAM. ONE THAT FLOWS WITH THE ORIGANAL AND BRING BACK THE STAY PUFT. WE ARE 100% BEHIND DAN AND ANYONE ELSE IN THIS VENTURE FOR "GHOSTBUSTERS 3".
YOU HAVE OUR BLESSING! GO GHOOOSTBUSTERS!
NOTE - I HOPE THE MOVIE IS WRITTEN SO ALL CAN ENJOY. REAL HUMOR AND NO CHEESY LANGUAGE TO MAKE IT BAD ASS. IT ALREADY IS, JUST GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT.
THANK YOU - CAL G. CEO AND OWNER OF SPECTORS INVESTIGATIONS.
  • jAMES
i think that the aptow group should help write it but now have the apatow group in the movie. all four original ones need to be in this film. THEY ARE THE GHOSTBUSTERS! that's what we know. the apatow group should be trying to look at remaking MEATBALLS! that'd be freaking awesome!
  • Tessa
Please make a ghost busters 3. my husband and i love to first 2. We think it would be awsome is if ghost busters 3 was made. I bet alot if people would watch it in the movies and buy it when it come out.
  • MDstatus
I think it's AWESOME Man!!! Finally GB3:Ghostbustin' in Hell!
Besides, I think it's about time to refurbish or enhance the new Ecto-1A and upgrade it to further more lights, the GB original team,
along with the new GB team, an all-star cast; Ben Stiller is one of them, maybe Orlando Jones just name a few, and yes have a female GB teammember. Some cool flysuits (uniform colors) and with an edge put a digital-style camoflauge flysuits, etc, etc.
All i know, this new film should bring lots of ghostbustin like the first film, the second was alright but it was missing something, on the contrary, it had alot of humour, but i believe GB3 should bring it all out (of hell), lots of racy scenes (example, seeing a woman (or demonness), sexy legs nice and firm as the camera pans upward to the mini skirt, and cut it to Ray and the slim pack accidentally squirts a nice wad just for humor, i dunno, that's just my idea-- you can have it, i give to ya!
All i know, i cannot wait to come out, bustin harder than hell!
    I'm hyped up!
  • MDstatus
They do say 3rd time is a charm, yes, Ghostbusters 3?
YES SIR!!!!, I cannot wait for it to come out!
  • MDstatus
Just one more idea? I think Dan Akroyd should make some calls to GM dealers (any Cadillac dealers), and be a sponsor to bring back the 59 Cadillac ambulance/hearse but more of a 21st century 2010 version, more like Dodge came with their new yet original design like Challenger, i think it'll be cool, kind of like in Michael Bay's Transformers Bumblebee's new Camaro.
Just think of it, to be really a diehard GB fan, you got to have your very own Ecto1, Ecto1A, or Ecto1B, just my opinion, ya'kno!
    (3rd's a charm)
  • chrissyp
i think this movie has the potential to be an awesome top off to the ghostbusters. as long as bill murray is involved it will be no less than legendary. i think the involvement of apatow and rogan is possibly the greatsest idea anyone could have come up with. got to say i am excited about this bad boy hittin the flicks
