This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

The Good

THE OFFICE (SEASON 4)
Season Four of The Office may not be the best display of episodes the show has to offer, but it’s still a great season all the same. The most notable issue is that the story arc isn’t quite as well-rounded this go around, which is due in large part to the season being truncated to 14 episodes (thanks writer’s strike!). That’s not to say there haven’t been some interesting developments. For one, Jim and Pam are officially together now, and somehow the writers were able to carefully downplay it so the character’s wonderful dynamic together hasn’t been affected at all. Even more interesting though is Michael’s relationship with Jan, which is taken to a much darker place than ever has been before and continues to reverse our perceptions of him. It’s things like this that are part of what makes The Office above and beyond one of the best comedy shows on television.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Four commentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes, “Did I Stutter?” Read-Through, The Office Convention Invitation, The Office Convention: Writer’s Block Panel, and a Goodbye Toby Music Video.

THE PROMOTION
Starring Seann William Scott and the always hilarious John C. Reilly as two assistant managers of a corporate grocery store dueling for the same promotion, this comedy seems like a halfway decent version of Employee of the Month. It’s gotten a pretty mixed response from critics and audiences, as apparently it’s a low-key and forgettable affair, but if you’re feeling lazy and are in need of a video rental, this seems like a decent choice.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, making-of featurette, webisodes, and outtakes.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (SEASON 4)
Admitting to people that I like this show is almost like I admitting I have a vagina, but after three seasons of sneaking around to avoid people finding out my terrible secret, I just can’t contain it any longer. I love Desperate Housewives. There, I said it. And even though I haven’t yet had the privilege of checking out Season 4, I will happily pick up the DVD box set, as I’ve heard from some that this is the best season since the first. Don’t disappoint me, you drama-filled, love-entangled crazy Wisteria Lane bitches! [Season 4 contains 17 episodes, also shortened due to the writer's strike.]
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: “Couples commentary” (in which the stars pair up to talk about favorite season 4 moments), two featurettes (’Getting Desperate From Beginning To End’, ‘ Men of Wisteria Lane’), deleted scenes, and bloopers.

SUPERNATURAL (SEASON 3)
I’ll leave it up to you guys to tell me whether this show about two brothers who battle evil spirits deserves to be in “The Good” section or not. Critical reaction seems to lean toward the negative, whereas audience response seems to be exceptionally positive. Being that I’m a big fan of this demon-infused genre (less so of WB teenager melodramas), and since you guys did such a job convincing me Prison Break was worth checking out, I’d love to hear whether I’m missing out by not giving it a chance. [Season 3 contains 16 episodes.]
Blu-ray? Yes (releases November 11, 2008).
Notable Extras: Seven “A Closer Look” featurettes, Ghostfacers! Confessionals, a special effects featurette, a featurette on Dean’s car, and a gag reel.

THE BIG BANG THEORY (SEASON 1)
Yet again we’ve struck a show that I don’t watch, this one being a sitcom about “a woman who moves into an apartment next door to two brilliant but socially awkward physicists who shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.” (IMDB) Much like Supernatural, critics seem to be divided on this one, yet it has a select group of self-proclaimed “geek” fans who are absolutely nuts about it. Personally, I might’ve been willing to give it a chance before watching several clips online, but being that I didn’t laugh once, and am also wondering how there’s enough material for more than an episode (let alone a season), I think I’ll pass. [Season 1 contains 17 episodes.]
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A making-of featurette (’Quantum Mechanics of the Big Bang Theory’).

MARRIED LIFE
According to the reviewer response on Rotten Tomatoes, the best thing Married Life has going for it is the fantastic performances from its talented ensemble cast, which includes Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, and Rachel McAdams. The film is a darkly witty “1940s-set drama where an adulterous man plots his wife’s death instead of putting her through the humiliation of a divorce.” (IMDB) Despite that great premise, it’s been said that the movie has tone and pacing problems that prevent it from reaching greatness.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Audio commentary and three alternative endings.

The Bad

LIFE (SEASON 1)
Some people may find it unfair of me to instantly label a show as bad due to a single video clip, and normally I would agree with the sentiment… Then I saw THIS. As a gamer, it actually pains me to watch that footage. Any show that can combine so many illogical concepts, poorly handled clichés, and a complete disregard for reality in such a short span of time just cannot be considered quality television.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: Five audio commentaries, deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and several featurettes.

You saw the one terrible clip from Life. And yes, it is one of the worst things in to be written in TV in a long time. Persian boy hides his information....in Prince of Persia! But I implore you to watch the pilot of Big Bang Theory before putting it in the GOOD section.

    Seriously, I dare you!
  • gryffin
I'm just shocked to see big bang theory as good. I watch how i met your mother...which comes on right after it. I usually catch the ending of the show. It's the worst piece of crap there is, and I'm not a big fan of 'sitcom'/laugh track type shows.
  • Wow. Life is bad and the big bang theory is good? That doesn't make sense. I'm a gamer and I didn't find that clip offensive. Yeah, they got things wrong, sure, it seemed pretty illogical, but people actually hide files in other programs. They just decided to put it in a game. The show is actually one of the best new shows to come out last year.

I think you need to give the show another go. Basing your judgment on one clip is not fair. It's a really good show. Being a gamer, you should be able to laugh at that terrible rendition of how the game plays. It was so terrible it was hilarious, but the rest of the show is great. Watch the show for real before you place it in the bad section for no logical reason. It's irrational.
  • Frank
Big Bang Theory was the funniest show of last season. I didn't know people where this divided on it. Everyone I know who watches it loves it.
  • Captain Awesome
    haha,

    Adam has a vagina.
  • Hendo
I watch Supernatural and love it. If you love the demon-infused genre then you’ll like it too. You don’t have to worry about it being a teenage melodrama. Aside from the occasional vampire, this show is NOTHING like Buffy (Supernatural even does vampires better the few times they appear). Dean(pictured on the right) does like to sleep around but that’s about as far as it goes. The girls are usually just afterthoughts who never even make it onto the show and are only mentioned in pass by. They live on the road so there is no girlfriend baggage. Aside from caring about each other (they are brothers) they’re not emotional and are all about business. If you’re gonna give it a try tho you have to watch more than just the first episode so you can give the story a chance to get started. Also each new season is better than the last. Like season 1 had more monster of the week episodes while it was building the characters than the later 2 did.
  • Josh
"For one, Jim and Pam are officially together now, and somehow the writers were able to carefully downplay it so the character’s wonderful dynamic together hasn’t been affected at all."

Are you joking? Jim and Pam are now exactly like every office couple in the world: annoying as fuck.
  • 790
Yikes what a bad week for dvds.
  • Pentarix
"the always hilarious John C. Reilly"
I don't think a statement could be more untrue.
  • Tim
Supernatural is the best show on the crap fest television station known as the CW. I know that doesn't count as much, but the "Sam and Dean" brother chemistry is pretty damn funny. It's worth checking out from season one. Oh yeah, and tons of hot women are scattered throughout the show. It's Buffy for dudes.
  • Nantook
Don't knock on Life, one of my favorite new shows from last year. Every series has that one clip that makes you go "wtf?", that was Life's.
  • kapitan
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha that life clip is so horribly embarrassing and toe-curlingly cringe worthy!!!

    you have died
    play again?

    you win
    proceed to level 4

could of easily been handled better...
  • theanner
Wow, that Life clip was un-freaking-believable. It was ridiculously written and directed and went on far too long.
  • DW
Yeah, that segment from Life was extremely embarrassing and cringe-worthy, but it's also by no means representative of the show as a whole. The first couple episodes had a occasional clunky moments but they definitely found a great groove by the second half of its abbreviated first season. Don't cast it off based on that one clip.
  • clever name
how could you not mention the Blu-ray release of Transformers?!
  • Finz
Because I'm at work (I'm so productive, I know!) I haven't seen the clip you posted on your "review" of Life, but I gotta say . . . if I read that right and you haven't even seen the show, you've officially lost whatever integrity you had. It is actually a pretty damn entertaining show (MacBeth it ain't, I admit) but it's funny and interesting enough to keep you coming back each week and the lead actor is brilliant despite anything else. It is definitely better than half the crap that came out last season, including HE-BLOWS Season 2.
If it doesn't star Paris Hilton and you still classify it as "bad" without watching it, you officially have no more integrity or credentials as a "critic" of any kind.
  • Matt
Fuck all you fans and apologists of Life. That show was one of the reasons Journeyman was canceled. Life can only dream of being as good as Journeyman was.

I agree with the comments about Supernatural. Season 3 is good but should only be watched after 1 & 2. There are some great shows in the latest season but the overall story isn't as good as previous seasons. I loved the mindfuck episode about the haunted apartment.

Also, regarding the BB Theory. If you know what you're getting into it's a hoot. It's not a smart sitcom like HIMYM or The Office(?) but it's mindless fun even if the female in the show is just a look-at-me role.
  • Jon
I agree with everyone else here! You have it all wrong! Big Bang Theory should be bad and Life should be good. Why? Because despite that clip that has given aneurysms to gamers everywhere, the series is actually pretty fun to watch. Just watch the pilot and judge for yourself. It would be nice if they had a little more research into the scripts, but the lead, who was in Band of Brothers, gives a very enjoyable performance.
  • John Q Popcorn
I'm a fan of LIFE. Looking forward to season 2. I enjoy your good/bad dvds but will rethink if you judge by only one clip. I wasn't aware you categorized with such little support.
  • seanovan
I didn't think JCR was funny at all in "The River Wild" maybe it's just me. :)

Anyways, "The Promotion" was ok I guess, worth renting if you want a decent flick, do not buy it.
  • Rick
Life - Try watching the show before rating it because of a single video clip referencing a game. As far as I've seen, NO tv series nor movie has ever gotten video game references right.

    It's actually a pretty kick-ass show.
  • kingdarius
Life is a very good show but the big bang theory is HOT TRASH!!! i mean awful whether ur a genius or an idiot its still stupid
  • Yikes, some of you guys need to calm down. The point of this weekly column isn't to give me a platform to review movies and shows, it's to inform people what the week's most popular DVD releases are. People spend so much energy debating the placements of DVDs in the good and bad sections, they don't even bother to read the commentary explaining why they're there. If I haven't seen something, I'll base my placement on critic/audience reaction. You'll notice I did that very thing with The Big Bang Theory, which I personally have zero interest in but a lot of people seem to love. Then we have Life, which I've heard little to no positive things about and is getting generally weak reviews, and my only experience with includes that horrendous but rather hilarious clip (which is why I chose to share it).

The comments on the releases are NOT reviews. They're just general thoughts and ramblings, meant to share my experiences with the movie/show, tell a little about the plot, and give some insight into what people are saying about it.

So please, stop taking the good/bad placements so personally.

Oh, and Finz, I love how you claim I have no integrity as a critic (when did I ever say I was a critic?) in regards to my review of Life (when did I ever say it was a review?) because I put the show in the bad section over one clip. Here's a question: how are you qualified to determine how much integrity I have after I made a single offhand comment about a TV show that was meant to be taken more as humorous jab than a serious critique? And then to make it worse you haven't even watched the clip in question. What was your accusation against me again? Passing judgment without being completely informed? Hmm. Sounds familiar.
  • Jamie
Seann William Scott is not usually a good sign for a movie. Which is unfortunate for him, since he seems like a reasonably talented guy.

Anyone see Mr. Woodcock? Wow. That was bad.
  • Finz
"I'm 30 years old, I live with my mother, and I have a Captain Kirk costume."

Now I see why so many took offensive to this clip! HA HA HA!!!

I apologize for stepping on your cyber toes Adam. I mistook classifying a piece of entertainment as "Good" or "Bad" as a form of critique.
  • Mitch Mouse
I watched the Life clip and I'm....somewhat offended.I can stand to see 9/11 and Hitler jokes, Hell, I'll make a few myself if I can think of one that isn't too tasteless but that was just crude. It's like watching your Grandma mock you while you're playing Call of Duty.

A real gamer should have been used. Not some girl saying "I'm more into Tetris" or some Comic-con nerd decked out in a Samus suit, but the other 90% of us in the middle ground.

    Lawsuit a go-go!
  • Jon
Adam Quigley, it seems you are the one that is taking this WAY too seriously. Everyone else here is just discussing the choices and giving their opinions. Its why you have comments, so people can discuss it. No harm no foul.
  • 790
    Lol,,,Finz
"I'm 30 years old, I live with my mother, and I have a Captain Kirk costume."

    Rock on brother!
  • Actually, the thing that's offensive about that clip from Life isn't even the lame stereotyping of gamers; it's the stupidity of the writing. In what realm of existence would a person hide computer files on a console where his primary means of accessing them is completing ten levels of a video game? That might just be the least convenient thing ever. Couple that with the cringe-inducing cliche where the main guy notices the hot girl thumbing the air as if she was holding a controller and you have yourself a whole mess of crappy television.

And Finz, of course labeling something as either good or bad is a form of critique. If you really think that's what I was debating, then you need to read what I wrote again.
  • kheas
have you actually watched LIFE? the clip you saw was taken totally out of context. Please watch the show before making such a judgment call, I really would expect more out of a blogger on this site. Normally you are on par, but this one cuts into your batting average a bit.
  • kheas - Did you read my response in the comments? Apparently people are giving way too much credence to something that was meant to be seen as more of a joke. That's my fault, I suppose. I should've been more clear in my write-up. Then again, I didn't realize at the time that there were so many fans of Life that would take my comments against it seriously.

Let me be clear now then: even without that hilariously awful clip of Life, the show would still be listed under The Bad section because of its mediocre/negative critic and audience response. Were the show regarded as amazing, I probably would've still posted that clip and said my thoughts on it, but I also would've put it under The Good and made clear that critics/audiences appreciate it.

In fact, that's basically what I did for The Big Bang Theory.
  • kheas
sorry your taking a lot of heat for this Adam, but it did seam a little unfair. Alot of people look at your good, bad etc as a recomendation for what is out there. I myself have been swayed a little by your GOOD section and have found many things in the past that have been just that, GOOD.
I think what a lot of people are feeling is that, as a blogger on a reputable site, you have inherited somewhat of a responsibility (whether you want it or not) to be as informed as possible when making statements. Most people would like to know YOUR opinion, not a conglomerate of public opinion.
So, sorry for the backlas, I happen to like the show,LIFE, and my wife is a fan of sorts. Give it a try, you'll at least appreciate it, if not like it.
  • duca
I'm a BIG fan of Supernatural. I suppose it might be because it fills the void after Buffy, which was a show that I more or less grew up with. The series started out as a very typical seeming, road trip/monster of the week show and then BAM it actually developed a plot O_O At the core of the show, of course, are the brothers. Sam and Dean are just wonderful to watch together. The theme of family and sacrifice runs deep, especially once you get into season 2 and the events surrounding their father and mother. At this date I have only seen about half of season three but I liked what I saw. It's a show that should definitely be watched by anyone who is a fan of the genre. No teenage melodrama for miles either lol :) (Note: The episode where Dean is a PA... BEST EPISODE EVER)

As for the whole 'Life' thing. I've actually seen that whole episode that the clip was from. In fact, it's the only episode I've seen lol To tell you the truth... it was 'meh' The main charactor is appealing, but it seemed like he was trying to be House, but a cop. Perhaps with the proper development the show could be turned into something decent but.. neh, it just ain't for me.
  • Anti-Septic
I cannot take your reviews seriously when you tell me you are a closet watcher of Desperate Housewives!

Best new show of last year was easily "Life" Your review of it based on a brief clip sucked. You should not review anything if you cannot devote an hour of your life to watch an episode to give a fair review.

The best Comedy of last year was "The Big Bang Theory", if you cannot appreciate the interaction of these geeks who have no societal skills then I fear you are hiding something about yourself. lol As other viewers have stated, anyone I know who watches this show raves about it! So yea, it is just you basically.
  • nick
Life is a good show. Took me a few episodes to really get into it, but after watching the entire season, it satisfied me much more than that horrible thing they call actually call a show named Heroes. I sort of enjoyed Heroes after the first season, and thought of all the possibilities, but it went down hill during the 2nd season, and it doesn't even matter that they had to cut it short, THANK GOD they did it was terrible.
  • Nantook
To whoever said "Tv shows/Movies don't get video games right", check out Chuck. Best new show of last year
  • Mikey M
Damn right that Supernatural belongs in the Best catagory.
I remember not being crazy about the first few episodes of season 1 because of the macho brother sterotypes but they flehsed the characters out and the chemistry is one of the reasons this show is so good. That plus the writing.
Can be as good as X-files (a similar program) and sometimes can even be a bit scarier.
If you have not seen it, give it a try.
  • JB
I've been losing interest in Entourage, but I have to say, M. Knight's cameo in Season 4 is awesome. He needs some self-deprecation at this point.
  • cLIFF
Life is a good show the clip was the wrong one to put out the writers got lazy but the acting was great.I am actually more offended by the big bang theory talk about stereotype guess you can't be smart and have social skills As for journey man being canceled I loved it and wished they had moved it another night I think it did bad because it came on after Heroes and people probably turned from nbc because it was horrable(if you ask me i think the writers were on strike before they stopped writing).Plus I dont think many people really got it.
