In an interview with G4, comic book writer Mark Millar (Wanted) revealed his plans for a new trilogy of Superman films, which he would like to be shot back-to-back.

“A director approached me about three months ago,” Millar said. “and he said ‘look, [Bryan Singer's] The Man Of Steel might not be happening. If that doesn’t happen, it has been spoken about the possibility of me coming in, would you like to write it?’ And I was like Yeah.”

Yeah, we have already heard this before, but here is where the juicy details come in:

“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a big Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. And hopefully release them one year after another,” continued Millar. “If it works out, we’ll have to start shooting next summer.”

Wow, big plans, but even Millar admits that nothing is firm yet, and while this is a “long shot”, the director in question is “a big deal” and he apparently said that he won’t do it unless Millar writes it. But would Warner Bros put up the cash to shoot three Superman films back-to-back, especially considering the box office disappointment of Superman Returns? Millar has previously revealed that his Superman would be “Superman for the 21st Century, keeping everything we adore, but starting from scratch and making the kids love it as much as the 30-somethings.”

Millar also claims that Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass budget is actually $70 million, and not the already impressive $30 million budget that has been previously reported.

“He has a bunch of rich pals who coughed up $10 million each or something and in two dinner parties, he raised $70 million,” Millar revealed to G4. “Now he’s going to make the movie the way people want to see it.”

$70 million is a lot of money for an independent movie. For a complete overview of Kick-Ass, please check out out First Look: The Cast of Kick-Ass feature. You can watch the full interview with Mark embedded below.

I think that warner will snap this superman up, if this does get made because i think they wont wnat anyone else taking it away from them.

Also that Millar has made a decent film and Kick ass to follow up it will make it easier for him to create.
  • Captain Awesome
    Millar's writing blows.
  • Look, honestly, I wouldn't mind to watch this new *approach*. Really. Just.. I mean, if they DO shoot it back to back, they're not gonna release a movie every 2 or 3 years, right..? So.. more Superman, more often.. I don't know..
  • Any guesses on who the "big deal" director could be?
  • Hunter Stephenson/Slashfilm
Man o man, I really hope this happens. Millar is one of the only guys who won't turn Superman into another boring pansy. He gets it. The fact that we're even doubting Superman as a trilogy shows how much Singer has damaged the franchise and character with his previous $200 million soap opera. I'm surprised the trilogy director's name hasn't leaked online.

$70 mil Kick-Ass, incredible. Hollywood blew a big opportunity with this one. "The children, the children." et al. Laughable. Let's hope Vaughn allots some of that dough to properly design and set Nic Cage's hair.
  • Oi Vey
i can't wait for Nic Cage's hair. It's an event.
  • John
Has Warner ever even read Millar's work? This is the last guy you would want in charge of the Superman franchise.
  • Pill
As long as it isn't an origin story, or involves Lex Luthor, I am on board.

Superman Returns was so utterly soul-less and uninteresting, somebody boot Singer already.
  • orange cinema
    - wow, wow, wow! ok, the guy likes to take care of buisness. it's funny to hear peter say '$70 mil independant film' - but that's exactly what Vaugn has accomplished. and in order for kick-ass not to be another 'wanted' abortion, i know this was the way to go. oh, and this CANNOT be a nic cage picture - in fact a strong supporting role would be good for him right now. and i agree, fuck the kids, they have enough films - this can only be a hard 'R'.

-as for superman: i've always said he is not my favorite, but i like him and cannot deny what he represents, and his films do belong at the top of the food chain. we've heard millar say all of this recently, but i'm just dying to know who this big director is, and what's this new direction they're gonna take, and WHO is the new man of tomorrow?!
  • Captain Awesome
    John,

I expect lots of 15 year old angst-type dialogue. You know where "fuck" is used like periods at the ends of sentences.
  • Jeff W.
Please don't make us sit through Superman's origin for the millionth time. We all know where Superman hails from, so why not begin the next film with Superman already Superman kicking ass? Perhaps over the opening credits there could be a 2 minute prologue for the handful of people on planet Earth who are unaware of Superman's story?
  • JMoney
    I second Jeff W.'s comments.

And also, I've heard bad things about Wanted, so why would this guy be a good pick to pen 3 Superman movies?
  • Benny Turd
I feel sorry for Brandon Routh....
  • JMoney
NM, he's the writer of the actual comic book and not the movie.
  • 790
    And here we go again.
Another director that gets it. Lol.
    Heard that before.

Wanted was crap,,,, so here we go.
    Craptinite.
  • Brendan
This could be awesome if they followed the Superman: Birthright storyline for the first film. It's kind of an origin story in that it follows Clark Kent when he first decides to become Superman in his early 20's (in a modern updated setting)... instead of the usual origin business we got in Singer's film and the whole super baby flies to earth from doomed planet stuff that we don't need to see.
  • "Has Warner ever even read Millar’s work? This is the last guy you would want in charge of the Superman franchise."

Except for his awesome work on the Superman Adventures comic and Red Son?
  • 790
If they do another supes origin film everyone over the age of 15 should Boycott !!!!!!
  • John
I'll give you Red Son (to a degree), but Millar went off the reservation years ago and shows no signs of returning. Have you read the crap he's been churning out lately with 1985, Civil War, Ult. Fantastic Four, Kick-Ass, or Wanted? All complete rubbish. The guy, like Captain Awesome pointed out, writes like an angry 15-year-old now.
  • Anthony FTMFW
I'm not sure why so many people are opposed to an origins story. The reason why Batman Begins was so successful was because it essentially reinvented the franchise for today's audience, and it did so by making a new origins story. We got to see WHY Bruce Wayne decides to become Batman. We most definitely need the same for Superman.

In order for the audience to connect with Superman, to CARE about Superman, we need to agree as to, at least UNDERSTAND, why Clark Kent decides to become Superman.

And Lex Luthor needs to be a Billionaire who could care less about the real estate market.
  • I am so over Superman.
  • Superman
Well people know my origin story so well, it'd be pretty pointless to go over it. Flashbacks seems like the best option for this fresh reboot. And it's about time! 30 years and the best they could do was give me a side kick? What were they thinking? Well let's just hope it isn't the wackowski bros in talks to do superman. sure their action was some amazing stuff, but I'm not into all that long boring dialogue they like so much.
  • fex
Just the fact that somebody might be excited about a movie entitled "Kick Ass" puzzles me. Yea! There's a nine year old cutting peoples heads off! Sorry that just not the type of adolescent bullshit I'd be interested in. Yeah I know it's a comic but taste change and I out grew this type of shit a while back.
  • Whiskey
    A 7 hour Superman trilogy?

    Fuck yes!
  • Agent J
    I second that Fluff Yess!
  • YoungZe
I don't understand why they choose Millar. I mean, this guy is not suited for Superman at all. There is simply no violence in it. That's not going to work. But maybe this is what we need. :? I don't know i personally think Superman is the most boring Superhero ever created.
  • gocitizen
yep, Superman is just not very interesting. Good luck to any writer trying to make it otherwise.
  • nathan
superman return was the worst, the kid story line was dumb, kate did a so so jump as lois, routh sucked, where was his muscles,he had none.kevin was the best part of the movie,i hope they reboot the series, don't use routh, tom welling would be great.redo the movie.
  • Kal-El
yes, Superman has always been my favorite. Someone needs to step up and do the franchise justice.
  • alex
