Live Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Reboot!?

A couple months ago, mention of a live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film was posted on the Playmate toys website, only to be quickly removed hours later. Fans wrote it off as a mistake, but as it turns out - it is true. Kevin Eastman, the co-creator of the Turtle franchise posted the following on the Heavy Metal forum:

“Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrant a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better “re-invention” (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted.”

I think a darker reinvention could be cool, especially if they went back to the original Eastman/Laird comics as inspiration (red masks and all). Although, I’m sure they would take a more kid friendly approach as they did with the computer animated film. But in this post-Dark Knight world, who knows what might be possible.

But what’s the point of having the same director come back and basically remake the earlier film? I always found the action and cinematograph of the original film lacking, and hope they find someone better than Steve Barron, who could “do it right” as Eastman says. Barron, who directed the original Turtles film (the best of the series) and Coneheads, is also responsible for some of the great music videos of the 1980’s: Take on Me and Billie Jean. Barron has recently been reduced to directing television movies you’ve never even heard of.

Also, I wonder if Vanilla Ice will be brought back to do an updated version of the Ninja Rap.

Discuss: Who should direct the live-action reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Someone awesome should direct this. Turtle Power!!!
  • Oh Blair
Holy shit that would be awesome!!!!!

I seriously cannot wait, I also want this to be rated R, haha!
  • David E
This is truly a sign of the apocalypse.

Let me get this straight. Because The Dark Knight was such a resounding success, the TMNT franchise thinks they can "reboot" as well?!?!?!

    Calgon take me away.

couldn't be any worse than the final movie and that CGI one....I just hope they keep the guy in a suit concept and not cheap out and use computer generated characters...
  • I feel bad that Kevin Munroe might not get a chance to keep going in the franchise. Granted, he may not be interested in doing a live-action film but he is a huge Turtles fan and even as they were working on the animated film, he posted on TMNT fan boards and talked shop and everything -- seemed like a very talented and energetic guy. But I am interested to see another live-action film, regardless.

As for who could pull it off... my personal favorite would be Robert Rodriguez. He has experience in dark graphic novel adaptation, very action-oriented plots, and films that can appeal to children. I'm not saying he would do it like Sin City (at least not entirely) but he clearly, being his own DP, has a great vision for adaptations and merging styles and making films efficiently.

However, he's a tough guy to pin down so, if he's out of the running, there's plenty of qualified candidates. I'd like to see someone like James McTeigue try it. Bob Zemeckis obviously would be a great fit. And this is a little abstract but how about Stephen Chow? He would have to go to a little different tone than he has before but he does have a good pedigree to pull it off.

Steve Barron should...besides...the first 2 TMNT movies back in the day were and still are awesome...perhaps they should continue the story in live-action rather than go back and make it darker becuase i dont know aobut anyone else but the first TMNT was pretty dark with the almost death of Raphael and so on.
  • mudywaters
Yeah, the first one was awesome because it was gritty (gritty for TMNT). Sam Rockwell was the main thug in the first one! The other two sequels were okay...the second one a lot better than the third. Go, Ninja, Go, Ninja, Go!!
  • Simon
The Wachowski Bro! They know how to work with dark elements and fight scenes, and they already do something a little bit more kid friendly (Speed Racer).
  • emily
    This really needs to happen.
  • Twistedlp
Wachowski Bros are a great choice.

I'm so absofuckinglutely thrilled that its going back to live-action. And the fact that it *could* be going for a darker tone (the original comics were extremely dark compared to the diluted TMNT of now) just absolutely thrills me.

    Give it to Nolan!

I wouldn't mind it they kept it CGI just made it like the comics of the 80s. The art style of those comics was amazing, and not like anything you see today.

Here's a link where you can read the first half of the series page by page in black and white. It's amazing. Imagine an animated film like that.
  • JiveTurkey
Del Toro is the perfect choice since the Hellboy series has that rubber suit guys bashing each other genre.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
Del Toro or Wachowski Bros are great suggestions I think. And I would much prefer another live action turtle film over a CGI film.
  • Marko
Vanilla Ice already did a Ninja Rap 2 on his last album.
  • Yes! Go darker with the turtles!
  • Presto117
i actually really, really liked the new TMNT cgi-film, and i grew up loving the turtles (i still get mezmerized watching the guys in suits lol), but this would be a great idea.

i've been a turtle fan literally all my life and i would be there at midnight.

    first in line.
  • JiveTurkey
I dunno about the movie getting any darker would end up kinda forced...I think they should focus on fun more, leave the cliche darkness in the 80's where it belongs. The new CGI movie sucks balls because most of it is like derived from CG action scenes from forgotten Videogame FMV's and the friggin Hokey Immortal crap fanfic story that belongs to the mummy 2.
  • orange cinema
Alfonso Cuaron was able to do the 3rd potter film very dark, and still appease the younger folks. that's my vote, though it'll never happen. i also hate that they'll stray from those early eastman/laird books, there is an amazing story right f-ng there to work from, i don't know why they insist upon coming up with their own shite.
  • Superman
They just need to erase the awful sequels including the shitty cgi movie from our memories. Keep the first one though because it has actual quality and got the tone perfect for the series, not too violent but not too kiddy. Drop the danny subplot and it'd have been perfect.
  • Mag
But didn't the CGI set up for Shredder to come back! I want part 5!
  • Greyson
    2 words: Casey Jones!
  • UnKaL
    Ok....darker hmmm........TIM BURTON!!

What do you guys think? I mean he is well known for two animation that were dark and kiddish.....and c'mon don't forget the first two batman movies that were the shizit!!! Well I mostly certainly enjoyed the last cgi movie but when I first heard of this movie, I was already thinking live-action so yes I'm all for the live-action and go dark like the comics and a bit darker than original first one!!!
  • JiveTurkey
Tim Burton?Heck No, do not want "Hot Topic Emo Turtles"!
  • A Better Class of Criminal
The Wachowski's would be absolutely perfect. The Matrix was awesome... and they've had experience with children's cartoons (Speed Racer) which I never thought was that terrible.
So this could be really good.
  • dom
I think this movie should be along the lines of the first one. It was perfect. A little silly a little serious. I hate the term "DARKER" its over rated. Batman was supposed to be a darker character so it worked. It does not mean if you make everything darker it will work and be a blockbuster. NO TIM BURTON.... he would ruin the movie. Who wants to see Depp as Shredder any way.
  • Agent J
I don't really care who directs as long as they throw more martial arts and tag-team moves between the Turtles.
  • Gregg
    Guillermo del Toro.

To me that seems to be the perfect fit, since the creature concepts in so many of his movies are so completely excellent. Also, it's worth noting that Hellboy wasn't a CGI mess.

It'll never happen, but a man can dream.
  • Marshall
I think Joe Dante would be an interesting pick.
  • J Productions
I'm for a reboot but do it right. It should be dark like the TMNT really are. I'm not saying really extremely dark, but still darkier than they usually are. I thought the 2003 TMNT series first season was done quite well. Something of a mix between that and the comics would be great.
  • jj gonzo
    please ENOUGH of these reboots!!!
come on hollywood be original and get it
    right the first time around!!!!
  • Crusher Creel
Do we really need ANOTHER version of TMNT? Live OR animated? Is the concept really that interesting? I mean God, Jesus it's the 21st century can we have some new ideas please.
  • rjt
They can do it dark-ER. Its not like the early films are some untouchable masterpieces. How about a film focused on Shredder? The bad guy is always more compelling anyway, and the earlier films made him pretty lame.
  • Kiwamu The Kappa
a movie of issue 1 would e awesome. having the right backstory and having it live with cg Turtles are a fantastic idea, they can do much more than the stuntmen in suits. I`d love to see more tmnt movies featuring from Issue 1, and the introduction of April, Casey and the Utroms, and even the City at war Arc
  • I've been to the future, and I'm here to report. This is true.
  • you what let me b on this i fine somebody who can direct this movie hell i let emily direct the movie.
  • you kno what let me b on this movie i fine somebody direct this movie hell i let my girl emily direct this movie.
  • Cole
This upcoming movie sounds pretty cool, though I hope they include Casey Jones and that it truly relates to the orginial comics.
