Update: Russell Crowe NOT Guy Ritchie’s Dr. Watson

Update: Empire has confirmed with Guy Ritchie that the Sun’s report is FALSE: “I don’t have a Watson,” said Ritchie. “Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that’s news to me. I suspect that hasn’t happened and I’m still looking for my Watson.” The original report follows.

As you already know, Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to star as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming action-tinted adaptation of the classic detective. The Sun is now reporting a rumor that Russell Crowe might be in line to play Holmes’ sidekick Dr. Watson. According to the report, when Ridley Scott’s Nottingham was put on the back burner, a spot opened in Crowe’s schedule. A movie insider told the Sun:

“Russell wants the part, Guy wants Russell. All they’ve got left to do is dot the i’s and cross the t’s.”

Again, let me remind you that The Sun doesn’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to the rumor department. But every once in a while they get something juicy. Watson appeared in 52 of the 56 original short stories and all four novels, as a friend, assistant and biographer of the great detective.

Discuss: What do you think about Russell Crowe as Dr. Watson?

The sun are usually wrong about these like you said. Am i right in being told that there isnt a scripit for this film yet.
  • Nicholas Boyd
No, no no no. I hate this hack.
  • BadWasabi
I want Paul Giamatti as Watson.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    He doesn't fit at all.
  • Watson was an infantry surgeon and carried a war wound from heavy fighting in Afganistan. He was very much the tough guy.
If this turns out true then it might be the best casting of Dr Watson yet.

Back in March 2007, Crowe was rumored to be inline to play Holmes...so his involvement isn't a new rumor, you never know the Sun could be rehashing an old story...

btw Cher confirmed on Perez Hilton no involvement in Batman3, thank god!
  • Jon
I agree with BadWasabi, Paul Giamatti is the best pick for that character. But Crowe is just such a good actor that I'm sure he can find a way to pull it off, Kirk Lazarus style!
  • nick
I wouldn't be upset with Crowe as Waston, but there are better choices.
Now the only thing I want is for Ridley Scott to wait for Christian Bale to come available for Nottingham as Robinhood.
  • burt waldo
Kinda funny Russell Crowe being in a film with Downey jnr. considering Tropic Thunder had a good few digs at the ol Crow-meister.
  • Vobe
If Russel joins he will totally steal the picture from Rob..
  • Antibodies
If this is true it's strange that they would pick 2 non-Brits to play two of England's most famous characters.
  • simon
Mark Strong casted as the villain in this project?
  • 790
Another great reason to avoid this movie.
  • Chris
    Action-oriented Sherlock Holmes? No thanks.
  • YouKnow
I avoid any movie with Russell Crowe in it, so it always makes me happy when he signs on to a movie I don't have much interest in. It means he'll be too busy to be in other, better movies that I might want to see.
