The Dark Knight Breaks $500 Million

The Dark Knight surpassed the $500 million mark early Sunday morning, which is a new record, as no film has ever accomplished this particular feat in just 45 days. It probably helps that only one other film has even accomplished that feat. Titanic hit $500 million in 91 days. Industry Analysts still predict a $520-$535 million domestic total, which would be $60 plus million shy of Titanic’s $600.8 million record.

  • In articles like this, you should point out that you are speaking domestically. You have many international readers.
  • Captain Awesome
It's made an additional $416,700,000 overseas.

Batman does need a new Tumbler :)
  • Captain Fritzl
    hello captains!
  • Captain Awesome
    Aye! Aye!
  • Captain This Captain Stuff Is
great story and i absolutely agree that the dark knight will make somewhere between 520-535 and it will not get re-released at holiday season but will sell like hotcakes on dvd during the holidays
  • Eric
DAMN YOU JAMES CAMERON and you stupid sinking boat.
  • Indiefilm
    What a great movie.
  • Captain Jon
If it keeps making money in the theaters, it also means that they will delay the DVD and it means more waiting for Captain Jon! ARGGHH!!!
  • StarBlazer101
come on people, just 100milli more!!!!!!!
  • Captain Thunder

  • carg0
c'mon dammit, we can't allow Titanic to remain the #1 all-time US movie. we'll probably never get any closer than this.

    SEE IT AGAIN!
  • rich
It is the best superhero movie of all times but had it not been for Heath Ledgers untimely unfortunate death this would have been certainly be a 325-350 million $ grosser. No comparisons with Titanic coz Titanic was an epic masterpiece and still continues to be.
  • Admiral Threeleg
damn those icebergs on the sea of box office
  • Captain Thunder
aye those icebergs be a royal thorn in my wooden arse!
  • Titanic is a masterpiece and so is the Dark knight!!
Titanic only needed one movie and Batman needed to reach 6 movies later to go over 500,000,000 domestic....

The Dark night is amazing, but lets be serious!!
Titanic had the ladies crying at the end.

    Titanic 10/10
    The Dark knight 10/10

Anyways, I think it would be soooo cool to see Johnny Depp in the next batman film. That would be amazing!!!!
  • Rob
Arrrrrgh cap'n, look thar. The Dark Knight was thee cursed iceberg!
  • Captian Bob
the dark knight willl probably remain #2 lets be realistic

yarr rich yer probably right but it was fun while it lasted

I don't hate Titanic like most people on here... But, I do like to see things shaken up every once in a while. So come on, go see it a couple more times this week... just 2 or 3 more times each of you.
If we just pretend it's opening weekend again for this one last week.

    We are the Iceberg!
  • I love THE DARK KNIGHT but make no mistake TITANIC is a GREAT movie. For anyway here that dosen't think JAMES CAMERON is one of the greatest filmmakers ever think again. THe PETER JACKSON'S of the world can't hold a candle to him! NOT even close!
  • mike
Realistically we have to take something into account here. The re-releaseability of the movie into theaters. For those who have seen it both in standard and in IMAX you know this is an IMAX movie. This movie will clearly be back on IMAX theaters in short and long runs for years. People will return in droves to see it the way it was meant to be seen. Nolan's long tail on this move will set a new standard. Think about this: if Titanic was back in theaters would anyone go? No. Ten years from now if they brought TDK back to theaters it would be sold out as its an IMAX movie, and you can only experience that in the theater environment. This is a phenomenon the likes of which the industry has never seen. Nolan has by chance or design created a new economy for the theater industry.

    @ entertainmenttodayandbeyond

Woah, careful there... Pete Jackson's the man IMO.
  • Klaus Kinski
Last week i finally got the chance to see the dark knight here in germany (started one week before). Yes its a really good movie, and Ledger as the Joker is really awesome...but the movie is just good, or great. not "SECOND BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME". Great Marketing, good Movie....far from being in my top ten.
  • barry convex
    @ coreywilson

what in the holy hell (regarding your myspace)?

    @ klaus kinski

    agreed.
  • charles
Yeah this is great. But I see that it won't even get close to $600 million mark. If DVD and same day PPV weren't as big as they are I could see a long theater run. Although its 2008 its just not happening.
  • Spalding
Wow this is fantastic news for those jews in hollywood
  • why so serial?
    @klaus kinski

Since when have box office charts determine the best movies of all time? No one is saying that The Dark Knight is the second best movie all time (that would be just plain dumb), people like the movie a are glad its doing so well. Do you actually think that a movies gross is in direct reflection to its quality? Laughable.
  • YoungZe
I really enjoyed this movie. Gonna see it again with original dub. The voice actor for Heath Ledger was okay but i don't think he can ever match Heath's performance.
  • arn
Anyone knows when it's coming off the screen?
I've been living in a country that doesn't play it in theatres, and i'm finally going to the US at the end of September. Wondering if i'll get a chance to catch it.
  • Nelace
Good googly mooglies!!! $504 mill domestic!!!!??? I'll say it'll probably topple @ $550 - $560....what do you guys think? Also, will it top a billy (billion) combined with the foreign totals? Right now, it's at $921...I say YES!
  • Captain Awesome
    arn,

Considering how well TDK is doing. I can bet you will still be able to find it easily on screens still in the US around that time.
