With Wanted being a huge success this summer, it’s no surprise that Mark Millar is already talking plans for more sequels to the film. What’s interesting is that Millar has pretty much given up the comic book continuity of the series. In an interview with Newsarama, Millar discusses his complete disinterest in a comic follow-up to his original books:

“I’ve got this reputation of being a total whore, and even when I’m adamant about something like this, people don’t believe me, but there is nothing else coming from Wanted,” Millar said. “That six issues was the end. I love doing new stuff anyway – I get bored so quickly.”

Since Timur Bekmambetov’s film adaptation of Wanted differed in many ways from Millar’s original comic, I suppose Millar just isn’t interested in juggling two different universes. Personally though, I’m a fan of what Millar did with the superhero genre in the comics, and I’d really like to see more of that. The transformation of the Fraternity—from a secret society of super villains in the comics, to merely a secret society of assassins in the film—significantly altered the tone of the film adaptation for me. And while I found it a fun action film, a straight-up translation of the comic would have been infinitely more interesting.

But while we won’t be seeing more Wanted comic work from Millar, he will be contributing to some story elements in the Wanted 2 film:

“What I will be doing is providing them with a very small amount of stuff for a story, and that will be used as a basic story that they can build from. It will be a small outline that can possibly be picked apart and not used – but it will be something exclusively for the second film, and no one will ever really see it.”

“…It will be some of the stuff that we didn’t utilize from the first book for the movie – like chapters three and four – there will be some stuff from that, so in the loosest sense it will be based on the book, but only very little.”

I’m certainly excited to see more Wanted films, but it looks like the series is going to be moving even further away from Millar’s original books, and perhaps even further away from Millar’s influence.

Discuss: Are you excited for Wanted 2? Do you wish the first Wanted was more like the comic books?

  • I'm certainly not excited. Wanted was a huge disappointment this summer, especially given the original take on the superhero genre presented in the graphic novels.
  • matt
I wish the first movie was never made. And I pray to god this movie doesn't hit the theaters.
  • YoungZe
I would have loved to see a Wanted movie that was true to it's source. But Mark Millar is a whore and we can't do anything about it. The whole superhero/villain thing was unique and interesting. The movie was not unique or interesting.
  • YoungZe
And i didn't like the actor who played the Wesley. He is a pussy.
  • Jon
TBH, I felt kind of offended by the Wanted message. But who couldn't love Morgan Freeman saying "Shoot this motherfucker!"
  • Chris
The wanted books are tries-to-hard-to-be-edgy crap. The movie was a vast improvement.
  • "Are you excited for Wanted 2?" No. "Do you wish the first Wanted was more like the comic books?" Yes.
  • optimusprime
yes, im excited for Wanted 2
  • Pentarix
The movie was another example of a bad film that the mainstream audience ate up because it met the all the American requirements: guns, killing, hot chick. However it was executed extremely poorly and we spent the last 3/4 of the movie mocking the stupidity of it during the many moments of silence.

If you want to see the story done write, skip this abortion on film and pick up the graphic novel.
  • Devindra Hardawar
@Chris Honestly some of the edgy crap in the books was just dumb. I'm not saying the books were something like the anti-Watchmen that some people were calling it, but it did do a good job of presenting a world where super villains had a serious advantage on super heroes.

I feel as if the film just picked up the flash, violence, and guns from the books, and none of the superhero genre contributions. That's more of what I'm complaining about.
  • Matt
I hated the first movie, without exaggeration, more than any other movie that I've ever seen in my life. I have nothing against Wanted 2, if I could somehow live in a world in which I'd never have to see a single still, a single trailer, a single advertisement of it.
  • Tendrillar
I can just see him sitting back counting all his money, while answering these questions. The asshole. Basically saying, "My involvement in this project is purely superficial. And they can use my ideas or not, no biggie.........one thousand, two thousand.....etc."
  • I wish the movie was a better adaptation of the books...but I'd like to see them give it another go.
  • gah
It was one of those movies that you tell yourself "meh" when you leave. It was worth the admission but then you just completely forget about it and never think about it again after you leave the theater.
  • orange cinema
had they stuck to the books, it would have been a truly original/unique film. instead we were left with the same old tired formula, and an obvious set-up for sequels of the same nature.

i'm on the fence with wether or not i like millar these days - if he supports the same cinematic raping of 'kick-ass', i just might be done with him.
  • TJ
The first one was great mindless summer fun that didn't take itself seriously. I'll see Wanted 2.
  • Captain Awesome
Wait, so if Millar admits in not wanting to do anything "new". Why is it named "Wanted" then?

I want good writers to cross over to film, like Garth Ennis.
  • 790
    Boooooooo !!!!!!!
  • gocitizen
I love the attitude that says that "the mainstream ate it up" when in all reality, it was the same audience as any other similar, comic-to-movie film.

Well done by Millar to realize that the graphic novel and film mediums are not the same thing and to allow his work to be interpretted as such. If the checks keep on coming, I'd call him a wise artist and businessman. Count the cash and move on to whatever interests you.

Let's leave the pretentious, self absorbed, comic writer stuff to Mr. Moore.
  • Goobity
@ CA: I agree with that to a point...It's named Wanted because the checks from the studios name Millar. He seems to understand that once things get taken out of his hands, they are out of his hands. I'm not defending him, really : just saying.

Additionally...I'm not sure the 'outside' world is ready for the likes of Garth Ennis just yet. Or Grant Morrison, for that matter. As much as I'd like it to be.
  • Wait. We hate Alan Moore because he wants his movies to be exactly like his comics. We hate Millar because he let one movie be adapted to something different than his comics.

    Laaaaaaaame!
  • krackajap
    Thumb,

Alan Moore doesn't want the movies to be exactly like his comics, he wants the movies to not exist at all.
  • Devindra Hardawar
@Gocitizen I think it's honestly fine for film adaptations of comics to be different from their source material, it's just that in this particular case I think we were robbed of what really made Wanted unique. Now it's just another glossy action series.
  • gocitizen
    @Devindra-
I understand the point, but I personally think Wanted was a step to the side of whatever you are comparing it to. I enjoyed the GN, but the "superhero" stuff is something that I didn't miss in the film. I don't want all our big ticket action films to be tied to the superhero genre, so I accepted Wanted with an open mind and enjoyed what they did. The way it was scaled back worked for me and allowed me to identify with the main character's arc.

As for a sequel? I'd like to think that the Wanted story is fully told and there really isn't anywhere to go with it. When this is dicussed, I do see a sequel falling into familiar footsteps. I hope Bekmambetov takes Millar's example and does something different as well. I'll definitely be watching for whatever he is doing next.
  • Wanted was just and simple CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP.

    The comic is excellent.

Millar you really suck, letting Hollywood turn a great comic into dog shit.

Hope Alan Moore and Frank Millar don't give up into the dark side.
  • Lance Y.
Movies are movies. Try not to be a New York Times yuppie critic and just rent movies like these to watch with your friends over beer and popcorn. That's how the culture's degrading, but we love it.
  • Pentarix
No Lance, not all of us do. :)
  • Legion
The WANTED miniseries was so awful
  • Rex
Wanted was an awful movie tired and mind numbingly predictable.

How anyone enjoyed that movie is beyond me, you could see every plot point coming a mile away not to mention the bad acting, dialogue etc. really there are people out there who thought the movie was a success ????
  • G
Don't make any Superman movies with this man, Warner! He'll screw it up. Let Singer continue. Returns was not a masterpiece, but it was not a disaster like 3 and 4. Furthermore, I like his description of what Man of Steel is supposed to be.

And come one, hate Allan Moore? Okay, he can be a little bit of a jerk, he's old and eccentric, but he's the author of the some of the greatest--Watchmen being THE greatest--graphic novels ever written. Most people would have an equally big ego. No big deal.

Garth Ennis would be awesome. And bring Sandman, too.
  • Markus
Let me go on record by saying Millar and Moore are both awesome, they are like Professor X and Magneto ( professor X being moore, and magneto being Millar) Watchmen and Wanted are both good at way they are trying to convey. Now the wanted movie was not all the bad, think about it, the comic version of Westly was a complete dick he was like the Comedian on Steriods How can you make the audience like a character like that ?....simple you can't unless you change him up a bit.

Now as for the sequel I would like to more members of the Assassins with other powers besides bullet bending I mean they could make it more like the comic book by introducing other villains. Also I hated superman returns singer sucks as superman/clark we need someone more manly to do him right.
  • savage lee
fuck all of yall!!! wanted was a damn good movie and they need to do a sequal and bring angelina back. yes i know she dies in the first movie but how kan dat bullet have still had enough force to kill her after travling in complete circle and going through like 6 people. so yea great movie bring on a sequal and fuck all da hataz
  • man
    fuck you
  • Assassin?
wanted was a damn good movie!!
after watch this film, I feel....This is me taking back control of my life.
What the fuck have you done lately?
  • Gelbreak
I don't understand why anyone's complaining. I thought the first movie was excellant, a true blue summer action flick with all the things we hope to see in an action flick and more. I would love to see where they take it.
