The only good thing about those annoying Dark Knight sequel rumors is that it forces the actors on the receiving end to comment about the possibility in the inevitable denial. Our friends at Comic Book Cynic send over word that Johnny Depp has publicly denied rumors that he would be playing The Riddler, while appearing on a radio show. You can listen to the recording on YouTube or read the transcript below:

Host: Hey Johnny, a listener called in earlier said you have to ask about the rumors on the internet of you doing the Riddler.
Depp: Oh yeah, I heard about that. Not that I know of.
Host: You’d be a good choice.
Depp: It seems like it’d be a fun gig for a while, yeah.

So there you have it, Depp confirms he is not the Riddler, but doesn’t rule out the possibility. Christopher Nolan, did you hear that?

  • Jappo
    GET HIM NOW.
  • andy
so sick of that poser with his weird accents and costumes in fucking summer flicks. i am sick of johnny depp and would like him to go become a manager at a grocery store. hes in too many movies.
  • Can't imagine they'd hire any new cast members until they have a pretty finalized draft of next movie's script in hand. You wouldn't want to hire Johnny as The Riddler and then have it turn out that The Riddler's role is minimal in the final draft.
  • Josh
Please don't get him now. It goes against everything they have done with these films. Every single actor in these films (outside of perhaps Freeman, Oldman, and Homes) is an established, unknown if that makes any sense. Christian Bale was known for underground, cult hits before Batman. Liam Neeson? Excellent actor, hardly a household name. Heath Ledger? Relatively known but only for a teen movie and a controversial cowboy role. Celian Murphy? Most people still don't know who he is

So who do the rumors keep turning to? Johnny Depp. Angeina Jolie. Freaking Cher. If they go the route of The Riddler, there is only one choice outside of a total unknown and that is Paul Bettany. The comedy of Chaucer and the wickedness of Silas. It would mold so well into The Riddler. It really would. Especially in the Nolanverse.

Catwoman? Please don't give me that heart attack.
  • Stryker
It seems like it would be a fun gig for a while? He doesn't even sound that enthused about the idea. I agree with Josh that Bettany would be perfect. Who'd have thought that the two best possible Batman villians would be in a movie about jousting that featured the music of Thin Lizzy and Bowie?
  • Bob
excuse me josh but you are making absolutely no sense. most of your facts about the actors are complete and total bull. they were recognizable. i will name three movies each of your "unknowns" were in

    1. christian bale was in american psycho, a midsummer night's dream, and reign of fire

    2. liam neeson was in schindler's list, k-19: the widowmaker, and gangs of new york

    3. cillian murphy was in girl with a pearl earring, cold mountain, and clearly you have never heard of the movie that made him huge, 28 days later

    4. this one pissed me off the most since he was a well established star before his death and you ignorantly called him unknown, heath ledger. he was in a knight's tale, the patriot, and the very underrated lords of dogtown

i would not mind seeing johnny depp as the riddler and he has obviously shown he can be dark via edward scissorhands and sweeney todd so don't give me that bs either.

    my rant is over

and oh yeah, nolan give depp a call if the part is available
  • slammin'!

  • Thankyoufor
i swear to god if depp plays riddler ill be so pissed

might as well just bring back burton for the third movie

i hate burton fans and they would swarm to this if he was riddler

    damnit
  • Thankyoufor
    no no no
i hate burton fans and all this would do is bring them running

might as well make burton do the next batman

i hate that everytime the character is crazy or flamboyant JOHNNY DEPP JOHNNY DEPP, there are plenty of other actors FIND ONE!!!
  • LeBigMac
If the Riddler is even in the third film, which I doubt (at least as a major role), it won't be Johnny Depp.

Nolan will no doubt pick someone with the acting chops, but the chosen actor will be neither an obvious choice for the role nor a big name actor.

Johnny Depp, as great of an actor as he is, is just too big of an actor for the role. That's not to say he wouldn't do a great job. It's just that his performance would suffer the same fate as Jack Nicholson's Joker. While a great performance at the time, over the years we realized Jack was just acting like Jack.

We learned from Nolan's decision to go with Heath for the Joker, that the obvious or big name choices (ala Robbin Williams, Crispin Golver, Sean Penn) will merely be fanboy desires and not realistic possibilities.
  • orange cinema
    @ josh

don't listen to bob (in fact most of the movies he uses for examples are in that same 'established unknown' category. pearl earing, american psycho, & 28 days later are mainstream?! LOL, cmon man, get it together)

anyways josh, yer making perfect sense. it's that lower tier of mainstream where the truly talented lurk. for example, don cheadles is not as big a name as will smith, but is just as good if not better of an actor - i'd put him in that still under the mainstream radar category.

so yes, depp does not fall into that area, but i'd say nolan will cast whomever is best for the part, regardless of their standing in the world, and that's all we can ask for.

if TDK was inspired by heat, then i'd love to see the next one inspired by 'se7en' with a serial killing-clue leaving riddler. could depp do it? in my eyes yes, but its only nolans eyes that matter.
  • Captain Awesome
Depp won't happen. Neither will The Riddler.

    Let it go people.
  • Jon
    @Captain Awesome:

Why would the Riddler not be in the next film? Isn't he the most obvious choice for the Nolanverse? And after a performance that Heath gave, they need a character that can bring something new to the table. Who would be a better choice? Dr. Hugo Strange? Bane? Nolan doesn't make sequels so he needs a new story type. And Batman, the detective, has yet to be developed, and to appease the fans, it needs to be.The Macgyver-style gadgets that were in the animated series is needed. Also Question, but I am getting way ahead of my self. As much as the studios have pushed, Nolan may not return unless he finds a story that he thinks needs to be told. We are more likely to see a Frank Miller version and we all know how bad The Spirit is going to be.
  • The Riddler
@Bob... his point is....right now Johnny Depp is a Movie Star and extremely well known. The series has cast the parts with actors who have done good work, but aren't exactly attached to summer blockbusters every summer.
  • krackajap
Thank you Bob, you saved me the trouble of having to go through it. Those actors were FAR from unknown, especially Ledger.
  • JOHNNY PLEASSSSE BE IN THE NEXT
    BATMAN MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim Carrey did a excellent job playing the riddler, so I don't know???? I would love to see Johnny Depp in the next Batman film though, I don't care who Johnny plays just as long he is in it. He is a amazing actor!! If he does play the Riddler he better step is humor up and do something crazy, because Jim Carrey was in his prime when he played the Riddler....
  • Jeev
Imagine.. Depp with question marks, simple but brutal deathtraps, riddles that will haunt us for days to come.. and a perfect twist right at the end of the movie just like Nolan's brialliant Memento. Why not the movies becomes an action thriller? Making viewers wondering what's next?

If they wanna top The Dark Knight its not impossible, Nolan should take the challenge, because the worst rival that he could have is himself.

My top 5 picks to play the Riddler:
    1- Johnny Depp
    2- David Tennant
    3- Micheal Emerson (Lost)
    4- Guy Pearce
5- Jack Black (why so serious?)
  • My top picks for the Riddler....

    1. Johnny Depp
    2. Johnny Depp
    3. Johnny Depp
    4. Johnny Depp
    5. Johnny Depp

    He already proven himself worthy....
Charlie and the chocolate factory, Pirattes of the Caribbean, and Edward scissor hands.
  • Jeev
Oh.. By the way, Adrien Brody could do a good job too.

I hate the way Jim Carrey did it. My view of portraying Riddler is by showing him as an intelligent that you don not want to mess around. The balance between his comics and horrors should be perfect so that the viewers wont be judging him as stupid lunatic (in Jim's case). It had to be opposite to Heath's Joker in ways of costumes, perceptions and approach on Batman

If Heath says " Why So serious?", Johnny says " Lets be serious!"

I would like to see johnny playing a serious Riddler that has sadistic intent and make fun of his killings in his dark jokes or his riddles, (that would be fun) He should be like an unpredictable ghost. A killer that wouldn't kill his prey without having fun.
  • Jon
    @Jeev:

Michael Emerson would be really cool. But I don't know if he is capable of pulling a better villain that he already plays on Lost?

    action flick...or detective-spy-noir?

    @Corey Wilson

I think I just had an aneurysm after reading your comments.
  • cheeseburger-broken-english
yohnny depp as riddler is win :D
  • Eli
    andy (the troll):

He is in a lot of movies, but he changes his character AND his look for every single film. He's no second-class actor, he's become a great for his skills and talents.
  • Freddie
The only big name actor that I would support as The Riddler would be Daniel Day-Lewis.. simply because I believe he's the only actor that has the chops to at least match Ledger's performance as The Joker. The #1 thing that has to happen if they make another Batman movie is have a villain that can equal The Joker or that'll be the first card people will play when they say what they didn't like about the movie. They either have to do that or sidestep an iconic villain altogether.
  • B e n - A
Wouldn't the Riddler fit into the 'Nolanverse' by being as such like a Joker copycat. Fits into the whole escalation theme and all...
  • Bob
    @ josh

well after looking at some of these comments, i guess cillian murphy would kind of fall into the unknown category so josh i am sorry about that, even though 28 days later did get a mainstream release. but i still stand by my earlier statement by saying christian bale, liam neeson, and heath ledger are recognizable established stars

    @ orange cinema

american psycho was not mainstream? at least it became a cult hit. american psycho made christian bale a recognizable name

    @ thankyoufor

if burton fans swarm to see batman 3, wouldn't that make it a success especially including batman fans? it will not top the dark knight in box office, but it will probably make 300-400 million
  • Rocket
I think Riddler would work brilliantly in the Nolanverse. My top choices for the Riddler are:

    1) Casey Affleck
    2) Paul Bettany
    3) Guy Pearce
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    Riddle this me hearties, Yo-Ho!

It might be a good idea. But I'd like to think it will be someone we don't expect at all. Someone completely out of left field like Heath Ledger. That's the way Nolan works... he can find the talent he needs without our help and speculation. So I'm not even going to bother putting down my opinion any more... it's pointless. We'll know it all soon enough.

    Nolan's Will be done.
  • Thankyoufor
yea it would make it successful but burton fans are so lame

they think they know all about film but really all they watch are burton movies fight club and juno and donnie darko

johnny depp is ok but its gonna be DHP
  • Evan
Come on guys...everybody remembers when Ledger was cast as the joker everybody went wtf. Just because everybody wants Johnny Depp cast doesnt mean anything. Alot of people didnt want Christian Bale as Batman. They were calling for Ashton Kutcher or Brendon Fraser or somebody like that. I have faith that Christopher Nolan knows what he is doing. I think he has already proven that. Its didnt end like Batman Begins so nobody even knows who the villian is going to be. So everybody should just be quit until we here something solid and not just speculation. But since everybody wants to give out there picks for the riddler, how about Hugo Weaving
  • Dark Donnie
    @Krackajap

no one said they were unknown...the point was they weren't huge stars like Depp...
  • Detective comic
lol@ the nerve of some people
  • Freddie
Rocket, I'd never considered Guy Pearce.. but seeing as he's worked with Nolan and meets the star but not A-list star criteria.. could definitely see it happen. I think Pearce is underrated as it is.. perfect combo.
  • fex
Kinda hoping its not the riddler. It just seems like the Stakes wouldn't be high enough.
I'd kinda like to see Benico Del Toro as Bane.
    Just putting that out there
  • John
THE RIDDLER WOULD RUIN THE BATMAN FILM!!
IT WONT WORK, I DONT CARE WHO YOU GET TO DO IT!!!!!
  • South Texas Terror
woody harrelson as the riddler. three words - natural born killers
  • Dean
Johnny Depp is too high profile (His name alone would overshadow this film). Jack Black ,Woody Harelson give me a break! Paul Bettany is too British. David Tennent is too 1960's Batman campy TV series. Guy Pearce must be preserved for a Daredevil reboot. Michael Emerson is too cliche in his "Villinous persona" borrrrrring!

The Riddler fits the profile of a narcissist, which is what the Zodiac was. Plus in a weird kind of way the Riddler could be the Batman's most obsessive fan. And we have already seen Casey Affleck show that he was able to do this very well in The Assassination of Jesse James. I vote Affleck (Casey that is). Keep his brother off the set. Casey Affleck is the one and only choice. No other.
  • phoenix
    Giovanni Ribisi as the riddler!
  • adp
Nolan won't be using any of the villains that have appeared in previous films. He's already stated several times that he's far more interested in looking at using more of the lesser known baddies for a third film.

I can't see him casting Depp, anyway. It goes against his habit of casting non A-listers.
  • Ryan
Nolan at this point has not signed on to do anymore Batman films...I pray for the series that he does. However, I read that Warner Bros. is planning to release four more DC-Comic based movies, which includes a third batman movie. I hope all of our talking is not in vain...

However, speculation is fun...I had read that a major consideration for the villain of the next film was going to be Penguin and one of the top actors being considered for the part was Philip Seymour Hoffman. I think it would be an awesome pick just from what I've seen out of his ability to be evil from Mission Impossible 3.

I think Depp could definitely pull of the Riddler, I am just not sure that Nolan would go for it. One choice that I had in my mind for playing the Riddler, even though he has been in a Marvel film already this year, is Edward Norton. If you have seen Primal Fear, then I think you could definitely see how capable he is of being the criminal strategist that Riddler is know for...

Just my opinions...I could be completely wrong...
  • Bennet
Christopher Nolan makes his movies around ideas and themes, not around "indispensable" characters or big-name actors who fanboys demand to see... The sole possible exception to that was the inclusion of the Joker in the second film, since it's almost a given that you would include batman's arch nemesis at some point (although, it's worth noting that his presence was only briefly alluded to in the first film).

Controversially (and I am on the fence on this one because I understand the pros and all the cons), the only indispensable character not yet included is Robin!

So, anyways, before Nolan knows what the thematic structure of the third film will be, it would not be his style to decide on a villain (much less an actor) first and to build a movie around him--Nolan still has the choice whether to include the Riddler, or some other lesser known or comparably known cast of villains. And Nolan will not compromise his artistic integrity.
  • ummm, wasn't liam neeson in a little movie called "the phantom freakin' menace?" i'd say playing a main character in a movie grossing nearly a billion US worldwide would place you in the "household name' category. and you forgot michael caine as well.

    epic fail, josh.
  • Katelyn
I think Johnny Depp would be a good Riddler, because he has worked hard over the years to be very selective of his roles and plays the ones that he feels he is capable of fulfilling. He always brings something to the table that someone else may not have been able to bring. I think after his past film as Sweeney Todd, he has proven that he can be dark and sadistic. Todd, was a very dark and manical film that I was very skeptical about, especially being a musical, but I do not believe that any other actor could have pulled it off like Depp did.

Nolan has stuck true to the batman comics and has kept his dark perspective of the Batman tales, unlike other directors who added there comical scenes and props to the film.

I think Depp would be a wise choice and he would be able to pull off the dark insanity that is required for the Riddler, as well as look intelligent. If the Riddler is the next victim I agree with others in that he needs to be taken seriously unlike Carrey's portrayl of the man in the Question mark suit.

Only time will tell what will be brought to the table, but in my opinion of Depp as the Riddler, I think that he would be able to pull it off, and that his skills are being highly underestimated.
  • BigJ44
Frank Gorshim "was" the Riddler. It wouldn't surprise me if the Riddler role was made for him because of his incredible Riddler "laugh". He was bigger than life.

Johnny Depp is a "wildcard" actor, i.e. Gilbert Grape, Wonka, etc.
Depp's favorite director has already had his shot at Batman however.
The question is: Who is the best choice for The Riddler ? Who can scratch the edge of the wild card ? Downey would be a better choice.

Give the movie to Rob Zombie and let one of his cast of characters do it.
  • Strider
I hadn't thought of Daniel Day-Lewis, but I think he would be brilliant. He is an exceptional actor and very versatile.
  • Mike
I think Willem Dafoe would be sick for the riddler
  • Jbodz
Would it be out of the question to make a new villain altogether just for the nolanverse? It would have to be a work of genius tho..
  • RyanGosling
Ok, when I first saw Heath's performance, I thought to myself who else could totally transform themselves into a role that when you watch them on film, you forget who you are really watching. The only person I knew of was Johnny Depp. 'Pirates' aside, Johnny is an excellent character actor, though I do not know if having a somewhat mainstream actor as The Riddler a smart choice.

To be honest I would like to see Ryan Gosling as The Riddler, he isn't an obvious choice, but he is an excellent actor who could possibly bring this role to life.
