Questionable Internet/playground slang alert: A Bollywood family film entitled Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors is the target of a Warner Bros. lawsuit. The point of contention lies in the title’s similarity to the studio’s multi-billion Harry Potter franchise. Sillier still, Hari Puttar is described online as a blatant Home Alone knockoff. So the robber on the left is Bollywood’s version of Joe Pesci? Serious algebra. As you’d expect, Puttar’s producers and crew are claiming innocence…

“Hari is a very common Indian name and Puttar stands for son in English,” the film’s music director Aadesh Shrivastav said at the music release of the film earlier.

This is true, and I don’t think the lawsuit holds much weight, but c’mon, the general approach of “Whaa? Harry Potter? Ours is Hari P-u-t-t-a-r” is straight out of This is Spinal Tap (or Bollywood’s knockoff, Tiger Sandwich). Judging from this 2007 event flyer, the similarity didn’t elude Duke University’s South Asian Student Association. And if you’re curious, here’s the logline…

The film revolves around a ten year old boy, Hari Prasad Dhoonda (nicknamed Hari Puttar) who has recently moved from India to the United Kingdom. Left home alone with his cousin Tuk TukĀ  when his parents go on vacation, Hari must deal with two burglars who hope steal a secret formula Hari’s father had created.

Discuss: Who do you side with, Puttar or Potter or Daniel Stern? Do you think Warner Bros. has a case? Should American kids see Hari Puttar?

WB is just wasting there time and Bollywood is notorious for cheap rip-offs. Can someone say Oldboy? I don't know, I just don't care.

I'm guessing the studio is getting pressure from J.K., because she seems to love these lawsuits...The story is far from being confused with the Potter films..and they have a point about the name being common..you'd expect the Home Alone people would be more upset..Bollywood is famous for borrowing ideas from western films this is nothing new...

Hari is a very common Indian name, and puttar means son in Hindi..this is true. I'm Indian, and I speak Hindi. My dad use to call me puttar growing up. I'm sure it might be hard for someone who is not Indian and doesn't speak Hindi to see how common this is, but even then you would still be able to see Warner is just being ridiculous. The title of the Bollywood film translates to "Hari Son." Its pronounced Hu-ri and not Ha-rry.

That being said, Bollywood rips off tons of movies, from North America, Asia, Europe, everywhere. WB should just let it go, cause nobody is watching these Bollywood movies anyway.

Hunter needs something else to do. This story doesn't even deserve to be on slashfilm. Waste of space article about gossip that no one cares about.
  • Jury Betler
That old 'Hari and the hendersons' indian film about an ill-fated love affair aboard the HMS Titanic was far more credible a case imho
  • @ The E

We have different ideas on what qualifies as "gossip," and even so, there is a category on Slashfilm labeled "Gossip/Controversy." This is a post on a lawsuit involving a major Hollywood studio, one of the largest film franchises in history, and the trend in Bollywood of borrowing from Western blockbusters. At the core of the lawsuit is a seemingly flimsy argument over copyright and creative license, and as the commenter above you pointed out, there also seems to be a cultural misunderstanding. All in all, there is plenty here to justify a post. But wait, I think I have a new jpeg of Shia LaBeouf's healed finger or Max Payne's shadow on a wall, let me find them and I'll replace this post for your betterment.

If Warner/Rowling are so litigious and protective of the Harry Potter name maybe they should take a gander at everyone's fave 1986 little bugger run amok flick TROLL which features a bespectacled child fighting off mystical creatures with the power of magic.

    His name?

    HARRY POTTER!

    Hunter,

You have no idea how much I love you. People need to STFU and let you do your job. Keep up the good work.

The E, this article is relivant.
Are you aware of the FOX vs WB lawsuit concerning coptwrite infringment over Watchmen?
this story sure puts WB in a new light.
I have to wonder Hunter, if one hand donsnt know what the other is doing over at WB ? This lawsuit seems super frivolous, I would think WB lawyers would all be working on the Watchmen case. I hope WB loose's this suit.
  • JP
WB's just compensating for the rape they're about to receive from Fox.
  • A Bollywood version of Home Alone? I am so totally there!
  • ^^Dan Palmer just murdered WB's argument.
  • seanovan
Doesn't WB and J.K.R. know that imitation is the highest form of flattery?

It might increase the awareness of the original in India (just a guess).

I think this bullying is only going to be bad publicity for a Harry Potter sequel that's already been pushed back because The Dark Knight made WB's profit margin for the year.

How long will Hollywood stand by and just allow Bollywood to rip them off?!

Their movies are just rip offs: from Godfather, and Bruce Almighty, to Just My Luck and Mary Poppins.

This needs to stop. Wake Up people.
  • seanovan
Oh yeah, nice comment Hunter. :)
  • seanovan
Will, can you argue that the original will lose any profit?
  • egyptnation
    paint. paaaaaiiinnnnnt.
  • Goobity
If they re-name it Hairy Puta, count me in.

And for the record, J.K. Rowling ripped of Neil Gaiman's Books of Magic.
  • Matt
Law abiding, as stated above WB has little to no claim. Probably just some rookie legal that had free time on their hands. I don't believe in IP anyway. Either way Bollywood wins.
  • Bob
seriously though screw WB, i've got 3 things to say

    1. don't sue bollywood its not worth your time

    2. what is worth your time is to fix this watchmen lawsuit with fox and just let them have some of your profits. i'm pretty sure you guys have made enough from the dark knight

    3. move harry potter and the half blood prince back you bastards
  • Ptolemy
    @Bob:
U think WB are idiots?Bollywood is BIGGER now then ever was!It is a very big market for hollywood movies MORE then ever...!I ld love to explain further but m short of time.So whoever says bollywood is not worth it ....is an absolute fuckin mutt!
  • Amit
lol, good follow up hunter :)
  • Captain Awesome
    Will,

    Parody is legal.
  • Smumdax
I totally side with Bollywood... First, I personnaly hate all that is the Harry Potter craze... But on top of that, I hate it when bullies push lawsuits around like they own the world. I really DON'T think this film is much of a threat to the franchise... and if lawsuits were to be made, howcome Asylum doesn't get any ??? I mean, if you wanna talk about rip-offs, aren't they THE supreme masters ?

If Asylum can make Monster, Snakes on a train, Transmorphers... and what more, they release it right around the original big-budget film... and I just read on Wikipedia that it is perfectly legal...

...so... WB is suing Bollywood for something that is legal... if that is not bullying, then it's total bullspit.
  • Captian Bob
    @ Ptolemy

what i mean is that bollywood will end up winning either way because its not even about harry potter so don't waste your time trying to win this lawsuit warner bros

and also read smumdax's comment for more information
  • As I've stated twice on my site, I'm totally siding with Mirchii Films on this. Also, if you go there you can see the trailer.
  • rish
Omg..that is officially the most retarded sueing ive ever heard. It has nothing to do with harry potter at all..Harry potter prob need money to actually make their next movie a little more interesting.
