John Lennon Biopic “Nowhere Boy” In The Works

Numerous sources are reporting that Sam Taylor-Wood, a visual artist whose 2008 short film Love You More was nominated for the Short Film Palme d’Or, is slated to direct Nowhere Boy, a biopic based on the life of John Lennon. The project is now moving forward, and according to Screen Daily, the film will cover the story of John’s early life, with prominent roles for his mother and aunt, as well as for Paul McCartney, whose musical partnership with Lennon ending up being a fateful one (to say the least). This will be Taylor-Wood’s feature-length directorial debut.

Taylor-Wood described the focus of the film:

The women in John’s early life truly shaped who he became and the strengths and weaknesses of their relationships are central to this film.

The film will be written by Matt Greenhalgh, the BAFTA-winning writer behind musician biopic Control. Although no casting has begun for the film, the Daily Mail is reporting that Kate Winslet is one of the actresses being sought for the role of Lennon’s mother, while Emily Watson is a possibility for Aunt Mimi.

The musician biopic genre has grown rather tired around these parts, to the point where Hollywood was able to make a movie about how they all have the same exact storyline. Nonetheless, with Greenhalgh writing and Taylor-Wood directing, Nowhere Boy seems like it has the potential to offer us something different (from a plot perspective) and visually interesting at the very least.

Discuss: Any John Lennon fans out there? If so, how do you feel about a John Lennon biopic?

It has to be better than "Backbeat." It just has to.

Who the heck is not a John Lennon fan?
  • kheas
its long overdue and, if done right, will be quite a story. Here's hoping that whoever has the rights to the Beatle/Lennon library now, be it Jacko or Macca, lets some of it go for this film.

    @ Chris

    My thoughts exactly.
I am very happy to hear this.

IMO, Adrien Brody is the right man to portray him.
  • yeah
I am looking forward to it. Although I feel like it won't hit any of my local theaters.
  • Kieslowski K.
David you're so much better than Peter. Will you go over and pee on his chair for me? He'll never know. He's miles away. It will be our little secret.
  • J.D.
SPOILER ALERT: He gets shot at the end of the film.
  • Wow, you guys didn't post the new Max Payne trailer yet? Well, you can always go to my site to see it.

As for a John Lennon biopic, eh why not? We got his killer's story last year so...
  • Ryan
Sounds like it could be good.
Not a fan of the film's title though.
    I get it, I just don't think it's a good title.
  • Cody
    I am excited about this.

John Lennon was a huge talent, but I sure wouldn't want to journey thru that mans troubled life.
It would be cool to see how the Beatles met and how they kicked out the first drummer, but the Yoko years and breakup of the band would be a painfull experience to behold in HighDef Widescreen.
Of course the ending where he's shot would also suck the good times out of the film.

The title is HORIFFIC and ILL CONCIEVED.
When I first read it I thought it was a sequel to Bubble Boy.

    Adrien Brody would be good!

Other good choices would be Patrick Fugit, Paul Dano (he could break out!).

I must say casting Paul McCartney would be difficult... uhm McAvoy? Simon Pegg would be pretty cool, I think he has has an amazing role within him.
  • i'm a hardcore beatles geek and i'm glad to hear this is happening because his story is interesting, tragic, and awesome.

i'm afraid it might suck though. it sounds like the director understands intricacies of lennon's life and his relationship with the women in it. i'm double glad to hear he's going to focus on his relationships with mim and julia. two very important people in the development of john lennon's identity.

they're going to need someone to play george. how else can they tell the story of john and george's first time tripping on acid?

I can't think of anyone else to portray Lennon better that Robert Pattinson. Not only is he a talented actor but a very good musician, and I have seen a few black and white pictures where he Looks just like John.

Goddamn, can't wait! Need to see that, get that...

I am a 14 year old Beatles fanatic and i was wondering if anyone knows how i might be able to get involved with this film. I would love to play a teenage Paul McCartney as everyone tells me how much i resemble him and i even had to play him once on a little show on stage.
It would be my ultimate dream to play a teenage Macca, i think i could do a superb job.

    thanks

How come they have not made a biopic, with actors, about Lennon's whole life-before the Beatles, during Beatlemania, after Beatles, and then his death? I am aware of Imagine: John Lennon, but that is a documentary. I think it would make a great movie- struggle, triumph, redemption and then tragedy.
  • Kathleen
I absolutely CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS!!! I'm am one of the many teenage Beatles fans out there. And this film is gonna be EPIC! It'll be hard, of course, to get people right for the parts. Every little difference will bother certain fans, especially when you're as obsessed as I am. Overall, I think this is a brilliant idea. Good luck to the writers and actors.
    BEATLES RULE!!!

If they would make a biopic about Lennon, I would cast Edward Norton as Lennon and Guy Pearce as George Martin.
  • Jeffrey
I would also include a renactment of the first Shea Concert, along with other notable concerts (yes, including the "rattle your jewelry" remark at the Royal Variety Revue).
  • lub
they probably won't get to even 1965, though they should. its just too hard for somone to play John from his "fat elvis" stage to his untimely death. but i most say i'm excited about a new movie. all the ones i've seen aren't that great.
  • Zoe
Aaron Johnson will be in this movie! YAY
  • Zoe
    He will be John Lennon!
  • Rick
Paul McCartney is played by Thomas Sangster
