Max Makowski to Direct Voltron

Earlier this month we reported that Relativity had scooped up the gestating Voltron movie from 20th Century Fox (nice move) with plans to make it with a “more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including 300.” Latino Review (huge Voltron fans) report tonight that Max Makowski, a general unknown, is set to direct the nostalgic robot actioner.

Makowsi is currently attached to direct the revamp of Kung Fu, due in 2009, and he’s best known for the 2005 Sundance assassins flick, One Last Dance, co-starring Harvey Keitel. Haven’t seen it, neither has LR. IMDB: 6.0. Here’s the trailer. Other films he’s attached to, in a writing or directing capacity, include Shinobi and Hawaii Five-O.

A while ago, LR memorably referred to the script by the buzzing Justin Marks (Hack/Slash, Street Fighter: Chun Li) as a “fucking masterpiece.” I’ve got it, need to read it. Logline: “a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico which follows five ragtag survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.” I’ve been pretty amped to see this film for years, and the early word parlays that Makowski’s visual acumen will set it apart from Transformers. Playing it loose sans a $100 million budget and with a risky hotshot actually ups my anticipation.

Discuss: Familiar with Makowski? Please chime in below. Voltron fans, what do ya think?

/Film reader, ch, adds: “Saw One Last Dance. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. A definite ode to some its more entertaining Korean action predecessors.”

If by 'setting it apart from Transformers', that means this “fucking masterpiece” won't be an over-hyped, poorly crafted, shit-fest of a movie? I really doubt it. Even if it is from the same visionary creator behind Street Fighter: Chun Li.

Hunter, maybe its my nostalgia for voltron but i totally agree. this in my mind can either be an utter disaster or one of the sweetest movies coming up. who knows.

  • Screw Transformers! Voltron is where its at. The director better not screw this up!
  • It's gonna flop. Transformers is already out with a sequel, and is more easily recognized by the average Joe. Voltron, unless by some grace of God, is not going to work.

"Playing it loose sans a $100 million budget and with a risky hotshot..."

these are the ingredients that do lead to unexpected, unorthodox, ambitious, and suprising successes. i'm totally stoked for this film. i think it'll help lead to the inevitable flood of 'robot-drama's' that will include robotech, big-o, and definately some shittier hack one's as well. if the script is as good as LR says, then there are plenty of things in the voltron story that will seperate it from TF, though i do realize the average viewer might sigh at the robot onslaught we are about to incur

I don't see this project working unless it has the effects on par or better than Transformers. Now, I'm not talking about aesthetic direction or character/performance choices here, just that the CG had better be realistic, eye-popping, and badass.

Wu Tang has to create the soundtrack.

I used to watch the cartoons religiously as kid and I must admit, this would be hard one to make into a movie. Done right, it would be awesome. But what's right? This one is so out there. Just like ThunderCats, which I also saw every episode of. I'm 30, the prime age of these cartoons. They are burned into my childhood. But I'm willing to let just about anyone take a stab at making a movie out of them. If they fuck up... Reboot!

Screw Voltron, where's the Power Ranger love, that show with todays technology is perfect.
  • fabescore
@ Sean: WU would be epic!

@ Rosario: Still in high school? Voltron shits on the power rangers.

    Voltron > Transformers
  • Hows does an unknown director get attached to a huge film like Voltron?

I've read the LR bit. Just another fanboi jacking off to another treasured eighties memory. I was supremely disappointed by Transformers, and once bitten, I don't hold out much hope for the sequel. Some eighties cartoons just don't translate into live-action/cgi movies. And NY again? Seriously, why does it always have to be NY? You'd think by now there would be nothing left off the place, after having been flooded, blown up, penetrated by lizards and frozen over. Oh, and meteors, can't forget about them.
