Mark Wahlberg Says Max Payne > The Dark Knight

Another morning on Slashfilm, another Kid Icarus in Hollywood. Previously, Robert Downey Jr. used the web to hawk an Iron loogie at The Dark Knight and DC Comics, and now Mark Wahlberg—who enjoys lighting cigarettes in the rain—says he’d pummel The Caped Crusader. Put down the Pop Tarts and take a deep breath, fanboys.

“I’m not talking about financial box office, I’m talking about one-on-one with these [puts up fists],” Wahlberg squealed to MTV while flexing in front of a mirror.

We interrupt this quote to bring you a witty message from ODB. And we’re back. Moreover, Wahlberg offered a direct and slightly ‘mo challenge to Bruce Wayne…

“Take off the suit and if you want to go one-on-one, two-on-one, and put a couple of you guys together—they all like to put the comic book characters together—come at me.”

Who is he calling “they”?! Of course, this braggadocio is in reference to October’s Max Payne, the PG-13 adaptation of Rockstar Games‘ framed cop-shoot ‘em up franchise.

“I guarantee you there’s not a badder dude in a movie this year than Max Payne. This is like my characters from The Departed, Fear, Four Brothers, all mixed into one, times ten.”

Wait a second, Fear? Mebbs he has a point.

Discuss: Should Christian Bale bother retorting in front of a mirror? Chris O’Donnell?

/Film reader, Jones Johnson, says, “Nobody’s badder than Michael Jackson. …I have doubts.”

/Film reader, Reggie, nicely references Walhberg as “a white dwarf heading for a black hole.”

  • "not a badder dude in a movie this year than Max Payne"

Not sure about him, but Ledger's Joker was pretty badass. Then again, some people would consider Vin Diesel is badass. In fact, others would argue that [fill in name here] is badass.

But we're not talking about badass-ness are we? We're talking about the level of bad-ness, right? And nobody's badder than Michael Jackson.

Seriously though, if he comes through with his promise of combining all his characters and multiplying them by 10, then he should definitely be the baddest mofo we've ever seen.

    I have doubts.
  • Krejik
if Mark Wahlberg really thinks that Max Payne could take Batman than hes really stupid
  • Bob
max payne is a bad ass but so is the joker so all i have to say is who gives a shit
  • Gregg
This is clearly just a case of Wahlberg joking around in an interview, or simply promoting his movie the way all douchey celebrities do. Nothing here that should ruffle any feathers, so relax /Film.
  • Jake
Chrisitan Bale has already issued his mirror retort ... http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii138/heathm...
  • Aqualeo
This is only to get everyone talking about the movie. Just like Downey Jr. did for Tropic Thunder. It will still fail at the box office.
  • Roberto
    Good God, Wahlberg's drunk...
  • Reason
It's all tongue and cheek, nothing to take serious.

It's funny that the Dark Knight was so incredibly good that you have all these great actors coming out saying, "Oh yeah, well I'm bad too! I'm so bad... yada, yada,yada..."

It's all in good fun, even the Downey quote, but it's a testament to the greatness of the Dark Knight.
  • I'm more badass than the badass playing the badass pretending to be the badass.
  • Rob
Unless you are the director of Babalyon AD, you usually overhype your movie to the max. Why care what Walhberg says? Odds are the movie is going to suck just because most videogame adaptations suck. I am pretty sure Wahlberg said the Happening was going to be the most frightening thrillers in years too.
  • scott
if only bruce willis was younger and took the the role of max payne THEN payne would be more badass
  • Vobe
Max Payne is a tough character, but it will be hard for him to beat Christian Bale's Bruce. Max may be a badass, but with the way i think a story like this will work on the big screen, it will very easily become just another "revenge-movie". I still have my doubts with this flick..
  • Reggie
Robert Downey Jr. is a comedian. That's his thing. He always jokes around and it's rarely any different in interviews unless he's going all psychological on you.
Mark Wahlberg...well, what the hell do I know about that guy. "He's a white dwarf heading for a black hole." So I don't know if he jokes around in interviews, but....it's so hard for anyone to take this seriously, much yet the actor who was involved in the whole sack of shit. I think he's just doing it as a joke too because, could he HONESTLY think his movie could even touch TDK?

    @sean
    LOL :)
  • hmm, Wahlberg would say that wouldn't he - he's got a film to promote
  • dvq
did Max Payne ever used his fists in the game? ill answer: nope. i mean... he is badass but ... come on!
  • Max Payne looks like crap. Stylized crap.
  • Vin
    Hunter Stephenson owns this site.

I laughed so hard at the ODB joke.
  • Max Payne looks like a terrible movie. I'm with Jimmy on this one.

And as for the character, playing both games throughly and loving them both, I can safely say Payne won't scratch Wayne. Wayne has standards that subdue his moral delimas while Payne is just constantly bombarded with inner-demon after inner-demon. I will say that Payne is one of my favourite characters to come out of the wood works in a long while though as he seems fresh in a world of rehash and nostalgia. He's very similar to Wayne in many ways.
  • Bull
So his character is going to be like that loser he played in Four Brothers? Wow man, that is pretty badass. Four Brothers was such a piece of dogshit, I hope John Singleton never makes a movie again.
  • charles
    We'll see, we'll see.
  • Wall-E Plays Pong
Batman is tougher because he doesn't need to kill or use handguns to fight his enemies. He uses intellect, psychology, and pure brawn.

    Funny though.
  • Captain Awesome
"This is exactly like every character I do on screen. From The Departed, Fear, Four Brothers, The Happening, Rock Star, Planet Of The Apes, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, all mixed into one, times ten.”
  • OAKside
Actually, Max Payne's dev'd by Remedy (Rockstar's the pub). And get back to comedy already, Mr. Diggler-Corn .
  • Is he serious? lol

Bruce Wayne is Batman. He has trained years in the arts of martial art, combat, etc.
  • Agent J
I'm with Marky Mark. I mean with a dope name like Marky Mark, you have to be a Bad-As$. Am I right or am I right??? Hollywood get started on a Max Payne vs. Batman movie right now!! Dark Knight a Bad-As$?? I give that a solid Meh.
  • Didn't Marky Mark work out with cinder blocks in his video for Feel the Vibration?

    That's badass.
  • Amit
    lol@Captain Awesome

    yea sure@mark wahlberg
  • Agent J
Oh yeah, .sean, he did. Thats a testament to how his badas$ism works. Obviously he just oozes badas$. Plus he doesn't need to drop the F bomb to get over with the audience.
  • Go
RDJ, now Mark W....all have to compare themselves to TDK. Let your movies speak for themselves. And listen, I love RDJ just as much as the next guy, he's brilliant....but he couldn't follow TDK? Yes, the plot was dense and it twisted and turned every chance it could...but just couldn't follow any of it? What does that say about him?
  • XdarXideX
Jesus... I think most of you fell for the geek-banter-bait.

I like the style of Max Payne (from viewing the trailers). Regardless of how faithful to the games this adaptation is I'm sure it will be a fun, entertaining movie. But I'll reserve judgement UNTIL I'VE SEEN IT.

    Ahem..
  • evergreen
He cites his character from Fear but not the one he played with the Funky Bunch? BLASPHEMY!
  • orange cinema
speaking of past characters mr. wahlberg, i believe patrick bateman would chew yer face off and let rats eats the leftovers.
  • Detective comic
Mark wahlberg was kidding guys c'mon. He's 1 of the worst actors I've seen tho' ( the happening)
  • Elissa
LOL @ Jake. Love that photo!

While I think MP looks like it could be a really cool film (I like the Constantine vibe), there is just no effing way it will touch The Dark Knight. And I'd like to think he's joking, but like Reggie says, MW doesn't really seem like much of a prankster. He comes across as this churchgoing family man sorta guy. Snoozefest, right?

Although, I thought his performance was brilliant in I Heart Huckabees.
  • christ
is /film contractually obligated to run at least two dark knight stories per day?
  • Goobity
  • andy
    fail.
  • evanz
    Min Payne.
  • Chris
    Heh, funny guy.

I do wanna see Max Payne though, at least from the trailer I saw? I'unno. I'll prolly just watch it for the DB trailer that's attached.
  • Goobity
@ Chris: Or you could stay home that night and learn to write legibly in English.
  • 790
Marky Mark can bite my ass for laughs!!
This film looks like 6+ other films I can rattle off.
Wanted / Punisher / Matrix Reloaded / Matrix / Matrix Revolutions / the AniMatrix / Star Trek First Contact, and Jonny Nuemonic.

    :-)
