Quinto Gives Star Trek Hint?

In a recent interview with CreationTV (video after the jump), Zachary Quinto made a possibly revealing statement about his role in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek.

When asked “How did it inform your character, knowing what he would become?” Quinto responded that while Leonard Nimoy’s performance affected him to a degree, “Although, When you see this movie, you’ll understand that this story happens irrespective of where the Spock we’ve come to know ends up.”

Now, Irrespective means “Without consideration of; regardless of”. This to me means that Quinto’s Spock will not be the same Spock that Nimoy portrayed in the series or at least that one doesn’t affect the other. Fans are speculating that it may confirm rumors that the story will branch off from the original series, onto an alternative time-line. Or maybe it’s nothing. What do you think?

Wasn't the whole "leaked" storyline from a few months ago about how the plot dealt with Romulan going back in time and killing Captain Kirk, forcing the timeline to shift. Then future Spock had to go back in time and team up with alternate timeline spock?

Time travel is impossible...nah, just kidding.
  • Michael
You should watch some of the earliest Star Trek shows and note the changes in Spock over the years. Particularly the show "The Cage" where he is almost emotional... Perhaps it was that he wasn't first mate... Majel Barrett was...
  • Brian from OR
Zachary Quinto already said something simular to this a while back. His Spock would be still be learning about controlling his emotions and he would not be has logical has Leonard Nimoy’s older and wiser Spock. It goes back to the story being an origin story for the original series characters.

ever think that he is a different Spock throught the entirety of the film but then there is some major event that changes and shapes him into the Spock that we know? I mean young spock did rat out Kirk when he took the test afterall...
  • Jamie
    Hendo makes an interesting point.

    Also:

    Kirk lives! You know it.
  • Eric
Why not just go "[regardless of]" instead of consulting the dictionary?
  • Jeff W.
That's certainly a lot of over-analysis for one small comment. I believe you're reading far too much into it.

Weren't Vulcans emotional early on in their history? I remember an episode where Kirk and Spock go back in time in that weird library and he reverts to a barbarian of sorts. It could explore that.

I think that people need to stop reading in to every phrase an actor says about a movie, like they are purposefully trying to drop hints about the plot. Just look at when this movie is taking place and you know what he's talking about.
  • Yeah, I would think that Quinto's Spock is just much younger than the Spock we have come to know. I was certainly a different person in High School than I am now. Maybe the events that make the Nimoy Spock haven't really happened yet.

I'm really excited to see how this turns out.
  • Jamie
If you read between the lines in OhNoItsGojira's post, I think he is trying to say that Quinto's Spock will be more action oriented, Kirk will return from the dead and the Enterprise will have six nacelles and run on Quadlithium crystals.

Am I reading you right, OhNoItsGojira?

It's an obvious thing to state.

I don't live my life considering what specific situations I'll encounter 20 years in the future.

My life is lived for today and tomorrow will deal with itself.

I know what irrespective means. Thanks.

So if JJ decides to take Star Trek down a new 5 year mission in an alternate timeline how are the fans gonna feel.
    Hmmmmmm??????
  • fanboy d
that is the stupedist over-analysis of a minor statement i've heard in ages. he clearly just meant his character preceeds the other and that his arc in the course of the movie doesn't necessarily take him to a place that is where the TOS spock was...

an 'alternative time-line' scenario wouldn't exactly be the new viewer friendly movie abrams promised would it.
  • 790
Yes I agree that's what Abrams said he would do, but will it work ?????
I know some of the hardcore fans are gonna be pissed.
  • Jondy
I think he's just speaking of the fact that because this is a possible reboot, there are things in the future of this movie and the past of TOS that affect Spock's personality.

Almost seems like a cop-out for a lack of skill to play Spock but I'm not a Quinto hater so we'll see.
