Promo Pilot for Buffy the Animated Series Leaked

For some time now, the idea of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer animated series has been something that has left Joss Whedon fans salivating with anticipation. According to Wikipedia, we know that Whedon and comic writer Jeph Loeb started working on the series around 2001–but various complications prevented any real development until 2004, when a 3 1/2 minute pilot was produced featuring most of the show’s original cast members. The role of Buffy was played by Giselle Loren, best known for voicing the character in the Buffy video games.

The pilot was never picked up, and the project eventually died as Whedon and Loeb moved on to other projects. (Loeb is now a writer and executive producer for Heroes) Fans have been waiting eagerly since then to see this promo, but it never made its way to the Buffy DVDs as many wished. All hope was seemingly lost–that is, until somebody uploaded the pilot to Youtube earlier this month.

As initially reported by Geeks of Doom, the pilot offers a quick glimpse into what Buffy the Animated Series could have been, and honestly, I think it works surprisingly well. Set in the middle of the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the animated series would have offered a refreshing look back when things were simpler for the Scooby gang. Major characters would still be alive, and the presence of Buffy’s supernaturally-born sister Dawn would prove an interesting twist on the show’s first-season dynamic.

It’s a shame that the animated series was never picked up, but I wouldn’t count the series out entirely yet. Whedon’s recent online experiment with Dr. Horrible shows that he’s looking at new business models for his projects, and I could easily see the Buffy Animated Series working as a series of web shorts, or even just a series of direct-to-DVD films.

i saw a version of this posted on AICN a couple of weeks ago. It was a little shorter, but more or less the same. I'll jump on the bandwagon and say I'm sorry this didn't occur. But I do think there is still a place for it, and it's something the fans might take and run with if nothing else, honestly.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks Buffy's black lipstick makes her not look like Buffy?

LOL at "standing in the corner tshirt" and Giles' wicked sarcasm.

    Horrible.

    I don't want that. :?
  • i never really watched buffy. so i pretty much have nothing to say about this. anyway, congrats Devindra. must feel pretty good to write your first for slashfilm. peace!
  • ahmmm... I'm not sure what's wrong with me. But every second that I watched that video I just wanted it to end. The animation is horrid and the it just felt too Saturday morning cartoon crap, like it would probably follow whatever version of Power Rangers they play nowadays.

I'm here to say no to Buffy the animated show...

    hahaha, oh wow

I partially enjoyed it and I'm not a Buffy fan. It needs a little work with animation and scripting, but it is a good treatment and could be an excellent series. I just think John needs to go back to the drawing board with this one...literally.

I admit, I liked it. The animation is pretty good, reminds me of the Powers comics but the voice acting could use some work and a better script. I see this working as a childrens Saturday morning cartoon. This is not for the hardcore Buffy fan.

I didn't think it was all that bad. The style is good, the animation is better then some anime out there, and dialogue not so bad either. I wouldn't watch it but if I had nothing else too...

If I had nothing else to do I'd kill myself.

    Dark things."

I want to like it but I don't.

Seven years ago this would probably seem a lot cooler than it does now. No doubt, being a 3½ minute test (not even a full episode) means it comes across weaker than a full length properly funded animated series might. It doesn't have the benefit of developing its own characters, dialogue, story or style. The style itself looks lifted from Bruce Timm's DC animated heroes.

This has the disadvantage of introducing a kids(?) cartoon whose original appeal was to a 16-30+ yo demographic. Its humor, action and ongoing storylines were all far more mature and sophisticated than most Saturday morning fare. It stiill beats out most of what you find on primetime (Anyone else remember Buffy and Spike knocking down a condemned building with violent sex? Or Caleb gouging out Xanders eye with his thumb?).

Buffy wasn't afraid to experiment with its form either. Check out its dream sequence episodes, an ep where everyone randomly bursts into song or another where no one speaks for nearly 30 minutes of screen time. This animated series strips it of everything that set it apart from the other dreck that gets greenlit by execs and leaves nothing but the shell of the original series.

That's why it wasn't picked up.

I just didn't like how things were very uncharacteristic. Buffy's black lipstick, Giles sarcasm towards Willow wearing the same outfit, and the vampires turning blue after they die. The library isn't that big and when the hell has there ever been a dragon or anything of that magnitude in the show? I understand its a cartoon but I just don't see dragons in the show.
  • That was not good. It didn't have any of the qualities that made Buffy such a great show (no charm, no wit, no chemistry, etc.). People need to let Buffy go.
  • Brad
response to Matthew: Final episode of Angel and the new canon Angel comic features a Dragon. Dragons exist in the Buffyverse.

I for one like the promo. Whedon has delivered quality entertainment time and again, I've become a fan more recently than most and would definitely give any new endeavor a chance based on past work. He is an excellent story teller and has a knack for attracting other great writers to his projects.

The title is a bit misleading. I thought a pilot for an actually show was leak, but o'well. :(
I liked what I saw. There was some decent action and decent jokes. I wouldn't be begging for this to be made but if it did I'd probably watch it.
  • Mikey M
I thought it was pretty decent. Why don't they do a Buffy/Angel Action hour?

I don't know what to think of this. I suppose it was just too 'kiddie' for me. When I first heard of a Buffy animated series, I thought it would be something far more stylistic and mature. Something they could REALLY experiment with, you know? There's a lot you can do with animation that would be impossible with a TV budget. This, although not horrible, did not reflect any of that. I'm kinda glad this did not get picked up. It would have diluted the franchise.

Maybe I've just watched too much anime. There is deffiantly a larger audience for 'mature' animation and the same demographic that enjoyed the Buffy series would deffiantely be open to a animated, Adult Swim or MTV version. When this pilot was made these waters had not really been tested yet, so I can understand the kiddie approach but the world is a different place now. Let's hope that Joss remembers this if he decides to return to the concept of a animated series.
