Land of the Lost Photo: Sleestak and Will Ferrell

The following image gives us the first close-up of the Sleestak named Enik from next summer’s $100 million incarnation of Land of the Lost starring Will Ferrell and Danny McBride.

The Sleestaks are a horned reptilian-insectoid species that inhabit the alternate world stumbled upon by Ferrell’s paleontologist and friends. In the original source material, Enik is a more evolved, pessimistic outcast of the Sleestaks that wears clothing and speaks.

Back in April, we praised director, Brad Silberling (Casper, Lemony Snicket’s), for choosing men-in-suits over CGI for the Sleestaks, in keeping with the campy ’70s Sid & Marty Krofft TV series. Pretty cool costumes aside, I’m getting a slight Mars Attacks vibe based on what I’ve seen, heard and read about this film. Too soon? Sure, that’s fair. But the studio lowered the budget by $25 million before the production started, and I still wonder how much they questioned this material’s built-in nostalgia factor. We’re in the early stages, and writing about this movie already requires an inhaler and a spy glass. Somewhat surprisingly, this marks Ferrell’s first foray into the land of big, special effects-driven summer adventure films. Same goes for Danny McBride and his well groomed mullet. What do you think of the pic and any takes on the film and material?

This was in the L.A. times about a month ago...but whatever. Hope its good.

I loved the show..I just hope this doesn't end up like Ferrell's "Blades of Glory" or "Semi-Pro" just dull comedy...If Sid and Marty Kroft are involved in the production this could be epic even with the budget cut...They produced many amazing kid shows with modest budgets, great costumes and puppets...so I'm not worried effects-wise more about the script/story and chemistry between the actors....

Expect lots of "yelling" in this movie.

I was recently shooting a documentary in a building off Wilshire, I can't say where, but they were working on the advertising specs of the new film. They're spending over $50million just for ads.

because of the kid draw, i'm thinking this will do big $$. but along with the 'mars attacks' vibe, is anyone else getting a 'lost in space' or 'planet of the apes' feel? like they'll probably leave the ending wide open, but ultimately we'll never see a franchise spring up from this one film. then again, if it has legs, maybe this'll be one that has sequels.

and i totally agree that the men-in-suits decision was the cool direction to take. we have enough cg creatures, and it really captures the sleestak's strengths and limitations.

Christopher Marc, I'm pretty sure Sid & Marty Kroft are dead ,,,

    (Trivia)
The original epsiode that introduced Enik in season 1 of the original show was written by Star Trek's Walter Koenig.

I'm guessing this is gonna be a semi_gay comedy like all Ferrells other films. Those shorts sure fit the bill ///

It will be big on DVD.

Looks like Homer Simpson needs to see a dermatologist.

I have a feeling that they won't go for the camp as much as more of a family friendly comedy. I would rather see a serious take on Land of the Lost than a "Kickin' and Screamin' meets "Jurrasic Park" version that I think it will be.

This movie probably only works if they go straight out camp or make a serious version. They obviously decided not to go with the later since Ferrell is involved. I think they probably won't go for the former because I don't know if people under the age of 30 really appreciate the campiness that was Sid and Marty Kroft. I'm a little worried that Brad Silberling might go the route he went when he directed Casper which was boring kids stuff with juvenille jokes and very kid friendly material.
  • I hope they get Peter Griffin to sing the theme song.

I don't think there's any possibility of a serious take. How could there be?!

More Trivia: In "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", Will Farrell's character was "Marshal Willandholley". :)

im sure McBride will outFUNNY will Ferrell!

I think you can make a serious Land of the Lost because I think the original was unintentially campy. Unlike many other Sid and Mart Krofft productions, I think they were trying to play this one straight. But like other Sid and Marty Krofft productions, the production budget was about $100 and the acting was horrendously bad making totally campy. But I know when I was a six year old watching it for the first time, I thought it serious and didn't get the camp until much older.

Personally, I'd take a serious Land of the Lost over a kidsy version if that is what they are making.

Hey Rob, did you know that the first season of Land of the Lost was written primarly by ex-Star Trek writers.
I used to be in love with Holly. Lol.

Maazer: Isn't $50 million fairly cheap for a film's advertising budget? Isn't the rule of thumb supposed to be "spend a dollar on marketing for every dollar you spend on the picture?"

jurrasic park blew me away when it first came out and ive been waiting for another good dino flick ever since.i grew up watching land of the lost, caveman, and all the other claymotion films but jurrasic park spoiled me as far as how real dinos can actualy look.so when i look back at those other shows i kinda laugh at what i thought was 'cool'...so i was kinda happy when i heard about this movie...untill i remembered the sleestacks.even as a kid i thought they were a bit corny.i agree though.i think a more serious dino flick would be more entertaining then a kiddy flick but can you be serious with lizard men walking around? who knows.guess we'll have to wait and see.i still think a live action movie based on the caddilacs and dinosaurs comic book and cartoon needs to be made!

    @ mayorjimmy

i hear phil anselmo singing the theme song...

    @ goobity

'Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly' - i'd forgotten they did that, rad!

for some reason, the early green sleestak photos got my interest up for this flick. i'm also pulling for ferrel, because i'm thinking that he's following in carrey and sandler's sad footsteps. and his imdb 'upcoming films list' doesn't give much hope that he's gonna change this recent run of absolutely shitty films.

Honestly, how the hell can you not like the looks of this.

is that the love child of Greedo and Abe Sapian standing next to Will Ferrel? I never knew that Greedo was a chick, or maybe Abe can do that thing that frogs do...
