I Love You Phillip Morris Photo

The first official production photo from the new Jim Carrey comedy I Love You Phillip Morris has been revealed on JimCarreyOnline. Adapted from Steve McVicker’s 2003 novel, and based on a true story. Carrey plays Russell, a criminal who falls in love with his cell mate, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). After Morris’ release from prison, Russell attempts a variety of bizarre prison escapes in hopes of reuniting with the love of his life. The movie was apparently pitched as “Catch Me if You Can meets Brokeback Mountain“. The screenplay was written by the team who did Bad Santa. You can read the actual book description below

Steven Russell possessed unusual talents-he was a jailhouse Houdini with a specialty in fraud. Staging his escapes on a series of Friday the thirteenths, he managed to outwit the Texas criminal justice experts in four ingenious jailbreaks. The rst time, he simply waved a walkie-talkie convincingly and was buzzed out by an affable guard. Another time he used a green pen and a bucket of water to concoct surgical scrubs and sauntered out. His ensuing escapes grew more audacious, as did his plans to reunite with his co-convict lover. Award-winning journalist Steve McVicker captures with a pitch-perfect blend of humor and disbelief the real-life story of Steven Russell, a con man so shrewd, relentless, and incorrigible that he’d be walking free today, if it weren’t for his fatal aw-he’s in love with a man named Phillip Morris. Written with exclusive cooperation and disclosure from Russell, who’s serving 45 years plus 99 years in a maximum-security jail (at least, for now), I Love You Phillip Morris tells an oddball American tall tale of what can happen when mocking the law, a daredevil spirit, and undying love collide

I Love You Phillip Morris is will hit theaters in early 2009.

Discuss: Does anyone else have the feeling that this will be another miss for Carrey?

  • orange cinema
glenn ficarra doesn't have the best track record, but i'm a firm believer that anyone can turn a corner and impress. and we all know carrey's efforts over the last decade (of course eternal is excluded)

off of the nonexistant info we have on this film so far, i'm going with macgregor as the most solid thing ILYPM has going for it. if he's in it, then there has to be something inspired happening on that set.
  • Jintro
Carrey showed his worth in Eternal Sunshine, and his performance will probably be the point where this film succeeds or fails. I don't know, I like the pitch and I'm willing to believe in this one
  • Adam B.
is he wearing the shirt from Ace Ventura in the picture on the left? XD
  • Kimo
I really think this one is going to bomb, big time. It may possibly destroy Jim Carrey's acting career, as well. Just the picture gives me chicken skin, where they're about to kiss. I'm not a homophobe, but I see no need to flaunt this unnatural, perverted affection on the big screen. And expecially with a big name such as Jim Carrey. It's not like there will be a happy ending with those two standing outside of their home, watching their kids playing in the yard...know what I'm saying. Get it outta here, enough trying to push the homosexual films on the American public, it's always gonna be disgusting for the majority of us.
  • Adam B.
Saying it's disgusting makes it seem like you ARE homophobic. I mean this is based on a true story. I don't get how it's 'unnatural' either. Pushing them on the public? Just don't go see (everyone has that option) if it really makes you THAT uncomfortable. But yeah, I admit it's a bit weird seeing Jim Carrey about to kiss another guy, haha. The concept sounds interesting though.
  • Kimo
Ok, came off kinda harsh, but it's gonna come down to the directing and what Carrey can do with the storyline, cuz this could definitely go to the extreme in either direction, as stated earlier by Jintro. It will either be a complete failure or a triumphant success. Either way, Jim Carrey is still the man.
  • D.
"I’m not a homophobe, but I see no need to flaunt this unnatural, perverted affection on the big screen." Oh. My. God, you are an asshole.
  • Mike
    oscar gold
  • OAKside
Hopefully they won't try to reproduce the old Carrey homor. (I'm looking at you, horrible Yes Man trailer.)

    Also: Kimo's a homophobe. ;)
  • Panda
Man, Carrey was in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.. so I got no problems with whatever he does.. that was an awesome movie
  • E
Carrey's got the chops... and I think the premise is definitely quirky but lovable enough for it to work... I see no reason why this wouldn't be a hit (of course, that doesn't mean it will be one... see "The Majestic").
  • Tom
Am I the only one who thought Eternal Sunshine was terrible? Carrey has talent, though, but I think it'll be tough to watch this one without thinking about all his rubber-face comedies.

And Kimo, you're definitely a homophobe. It's usually the ones who protest the loudest that are only hiding from themselves.
  • igroveman
If homophobe means that I'm a guy who likes girls and think that's the way it should be, then label me all you want.

"Homophobe" is like the term "fascist." One of the most used and least appropriately used terms in existence.

It is often used in the sense that if you don't actually get homosexually aroused in a positive way when you see such things, you are a "homophobe." The world needs to check/remember that it is possible to disagree with the homosexual lifestyle and still be a sane, loving, person. Just because I don't believe homosexuality is all it is cracked up to be, or that it is mostly the result of a person's choices, doesn't mean that I HATE homosexuals or want them destroyed.

What's ridiculous about this movie is that it probably won't have the honesty to admit that 90% of the laughs it is generating is due to the undeniable absurdity when a human goes after the same sex vs. the opposite one. Period.
  • Martin
definition of "homophobe" is: a person who hates or fears homosexual people
  • Agirl
I really hope this movie doesn't destroy his career. I like Jim Carrey and I liked all his movies so far. This sounds like an interesting movie to me.
  • Bob
well lets see if adam sandler can do i now pronounce you chuck and larry and make over 100 million, i don't see how this can be a success too.
  • Slobodan Chutzpah
Igroveman and Kimo: homophobia is a fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuals. so clearly you both are homophobes. No two ways about it.

It has nothing to do with "just liking girls" or any simplistic nonsense like that. And certainly not with "not getting sexually aroused when seeing homosexual things", and frankly you are a cretin and an affront to heterosexual men everywhere for saying such a supremely inane thing. Probably you are also harbouring deep insecurities about your own sexuality; otherwise you wouldn't bother being bothered about the whole thing. (And yes, do go and confirm your sexuality by drinking with your other "straight" friends, maybe preceded by some full-contact sport and commonal showering, probably followed by some drunken, "manly" wrestling and sincere intoxicated heart-to-hearts, and lots of very "masculine" yelling. Sound familiar? Or is it all about Jesus to you?)
  • nick
Now this is how you get your career back on track!
  • Baron Von Cheddar
It looks interesting to me. Granted that the homosexual hurdle will be a tough one for most people to get over, Jim Carrey is a capable actor. Most people can't see past his early comedies to realize that. While I haven't seen "The Number 23", I've enjoyed everything I've seen Carrey in (including the ridiculous Batman Forever and the Oscar-bait that was The Majestic).

I am sure that since Jim & Ewan get separated for most of the film, we won't see a whole lot of dudes making out. But even if you do and you want to squirm: grow up, man! When the movies over, go out and celebrate your straightness by making love to a woman!
  • Since this is a true story, I'm willing to give it a shot. The story sounds extremely interesting.

If done right, this could be a great movie. We'll have to see.
  • wow, some of you are homophobic. Are you boys afraid you might be turned on by boy-boy action?

Get over it and deal with it.
  • salthegeek
can we please just talk about the movie ? eh ?
well this should be a interesting film
    maybe oscar
  • leviticus
C'mon people. Stop shoving "you're homophobes!" down everyone's throat who disagrees with homosexuality. It's just a scare tactic to make people accept it. "Oh no! I don't want to be labeled a homophobe! I guess I'll keep my mouth shut!" Seriously, if you can't accept other people's opinions why should they just immediately accept yours? You think it's right, others think it's wrong. You should be the one getting over it.

Oh, and I'm fully prepared to be labeled a homophobe now, because I said something that is not in agreement with your way of thinking! Gasp!
  • akumi okuda
Speaking of words which are misused, how about "unnatural"? Saying that homosexuality is "perverted" or "unnatural" is just a way of discriminating against homosexuals for what you feel are morally justified reasons. Also, you believe that homosexual films are being pushed on the American public... that's ridiculous. How many such films can you think of off the top of your head, compared to the number involving a straight couple? Your comments are basically nonsensical, so people have plenty of reason to believe that you're homophobic.
  • leviticus
First of all, your comment comparing homosexual couple movies to straight couple movies is very extreme and ridiculous. The reason it's so heavily discussed is because it's new and controversial. If there was a movie about God everyone would scream that the movie was shoving religion in our faces, yet how many movies are made that don't even mention God? See how dumb that argument is?

And if you just replace the words "unnatural" and "perverted" in your sentence above with "homophobic" and "intolerant" you will see that you are playing the same game that the "homophobes" are.
  • ...so are we talking about the movie or everyone's views on Homosexuality?
  • Elissa
I'd fall in love with my cellmate if he looked like Ewan McGregor too! And I think the promo picture is hot. Count me in!
  • igroveman
Slobodan Chutzpah: Your method of response is basically "insult with heterosexual stereotype" overkill.

There are types of discrimination. Being anti-discriminatory doesn't mean you never use moral judgment. If Jim Carrey was making out with a horse, would you call me a equinephobe? Or a bestial phobe?

Just because a categorical term exists for labeling people who DISAGREE with a certain lifestyle choice doesn't mean that term is holier than thou, one hundred percent correct, and righteous every time it is used.

I, for one, am all for keeping heterosexuality as the healthy norm. It's that simple, and you can insert all kinds of psychological reinterpretations and slander all you want and at will - the fact remains that men and women are meant for each other and they are the norm. It is not bias, or prejudice, or hate that backs up that statement. It's just simple fact. As to how that plays out in my real world and my moral universe, well, you can't judge that because you have no context for it, other than the fact that I refuse to be put down and "silenced" by the word police who act like if you have even the slightest negative reaction to homosexuality, you are a "cretin."

Sorry, but you are the one who is out of touch with reality.
  • ...can we please talk about the movie?

the whole pro-gay/anti-gay argument is lame.
  • oh no!!! i guess that means if Hollywood makes movies about interracial couples, then they're shoving it down our throats that it's OK FOR A WHITE MAN AND A BLACK WOMAN TO FALL IN LOVE!!!!

stfu, Leviticus, and go back to your cave.
  • wow, so many of you boys are such homophobes. it's hilarious, funny and sad. 30 years ago, you guys would probably have voiced your protest against interracial dating.

people like y'all losers disgust me.
  • andy
    swing and a miss
  • Mikey M
First off....Kimo. Grow up. The media shoves pictures of Men and Woman about to and actually kissing. Ashamed of a response like that.
    This movie sounds quite interesting.
  • Agent J
    Why Ewan McGregor, WHY?????
  • Matt
Even if I didn't like the premise the Bad Santa nod would interest me. There haven't been many movies that I've laughed throughout and BS was one of them.
  • Nathaniel
@ igroveman, it may not be hate that is backing your statements, but using "the fact remains that men and women are meant for each other and they are the norm... It's just a simple fact." this as your justification does not work. Who created this fact that says women and men are "specifically" meant for each other? Was it the Bible that told you that? Or was it George Bush? I'm sorry, but I think it's up to the person, not what the Bible or what the Government has to say.
  • pete (original)
this will be another miss for jim carrey. why try to get back to your former popularity by grossing everyone out.
  • Rachel Summers
I think it'll actually be a good thing for carrey. I can't wait to see it.
  • I think some people are missing the point. No one is going to turn gay by watching this movie, nor is this a "gay propeganda" movie.

This is s true story about a guy (who happened to be gay) broke out of prison multiple times. He broke out of prison to be with his ex-cellmate/lover. If he hadn't been obsessed with breaking out of prison, he would have been parolled. However, because of his numerous escapes, the dude is still in prison!

This is an extremely interesting story...and it happened! I'm really interested in what Jim Carrey brings to the role, but I'm more interested in this story. I think this has tons of potential.
  • Anna
Aw, I was just wondering what Ewan was up to, glad he's still around, it seems like a while since he was in any big movies.

And this won't be the first gay-themed movie Jim Carry's done. If the shite "Doing time on maple street" didn't ruin his career, this certainly won't.
  • Bobby
No one mentioned "Truman Show". In my mind, that film is a modern day classic and Carrey is excellent in it.
  • some guy
Saying you don't want to watch two guys kiss isn't "homophobic" anymore than saying you don't like radishes means you're afraid of radishes.
It's possible to not like something because you find it disgusting and depraved.
If you watch one of these "gay pride" parades you'll see these homosexual men (not women) parade themselves on our streets wearing nothing but their underwear, or ballerina costumes, touching themselves, and anyone else. All there for everyone to see on our nightly news. And when we complain about it we're homophobic!
  • ivyleaguer
I haven't seen many men in gay parades with ballet outfits sorry. Yes, plenty in briefs with amazing ass bodies! Damn! But for someone who is a homophobe you really hang out at gay parages, Someguy?
  • Detective comic
I trust Jim Carrey will pull it off! he's one of the great comedy legends.......however, I gotta admit it feels kinda weird seing that photo up top
  • Me
Let's hope its not anything 'meets Brokeback Mt" cuz that was a shitty movie. It had bad writing and was based on a 20 page short story that was also bad.

I think this movie has a chance to be great. If they don't go for silly, bad, physical "Old Carey" Comedy, and use his natural quirkiness and put it in good situations, it'll be great. Kinda like the humor from Oh Brother Where Art Thou, but in a completely different context
  • igroveman
I'm sorry, I just get so crazy at the thought of homosexuality. It's not right for me to force my views on anyone else, especially when I'm not sure about myself.
  • Gannon
About 10% of the student body in almost every college turns out to be gay/lesbian/bi. The bigger the college, the more bodies that fill that 10% slot. Anyways, my point for bringing this up is that this movie will specifically target that section of the audience and others who are curious to see how well the acting is portrayed in this movie.

On a financial stand point, this movie will definitely not make as much money as what the majority of the population on this planet is accustom to.

On a theatrical stand point, this movie could win many awards and be the next Brokeback Mountain. Sometimes the most uncommon theme makes it big and that worked for Brokeback Mountain.

It will really be interesting to see how this movie will turn out... its either going to be a big hit or bomb greater than Hiroshima.

No offense to the victims of Hiroshima...
  • gocitizen
    I'm a badmoviephobe.
  • Leviticus
Angry Broomstick - First of all how did you know I lived in a cave? I try to keep that on the DL if you know what I mean.
Second - I think everyone knows and understands that using interracial relationships to justify homosexual relationships is way off. It's like this; I can still walk when I have a shoe for my left foot and one for my right foot, even if they are different colors. But tell me, can I walk if I have two left foot shoes? Not so much.

P.S. Please don't tell me to "stfu." I didn't say that to you. I'm just trying to have a civil debate here.

One other thing, why is your name Angry Broomstick? I'm not making fun of it, I'm honestly just curious as to how you got the name.
  • just sayin
does that mean all the single people are barefoot?
