Weekend Box Office: Anna Faris Has Hops

While Peter is on the record questioning Anna Faris’s cute-ranking, I have continuously defended her on the site as one of the funniest chicks working in Hollywood. My first ever item for Slashfilm was shot down, even. It was to be an essay on Faris’s stoned character in Smiley Face, with a paragraph dedicated to her lime green Sex Wax t-shirt and brilliant application of zit cream. This weekend, Faris finally became a star, and the bandwagon is zooming all over the Internet.

The House Bunny, a rather quiet $25 million Happy Madison comedy, surprised at the box office, grossing $15 million this weekend for the runner-up spot behind Tropic Thunder. Sure it’s not a massive opening, but taken with her role in the Scary Movie franchise, the industry can’t ignore it. The number is being attributed to Faris’s popularity and talent, with reviews and journalists demanding she headline a worthier film. On deck this year for the actress is the comedy, Young Americans, from Fubar (!) director Michael Dowse and co-starring Michael Biehn. Not sure about that one, but next year’s Observe and Report from Jody Hill and Seth Rogen looks like a sure thing. And hopefully her passion project, the heady Linda Lovelace biopic Inferno, gets the boost it needs.

Elsewhere, the remake of Death Race floundered with $12 million. Jason Statham remains a likeable actor with high star potential that, unlike so many bit torrents, Hollywood hasn’t connected with. More on this tonight on the /Filmcast. Thankfully, Crank’s fanbase continutes to grow. Ice Cube’s The Longshots bombed with $4 million. Director Fred Durst, yadda yadda. TDK is still approaching $500 mill, banking $10 mill. Pineapple Express won’t hit $100 mill. Any theories in the comments? Meanwhile, the #1 Tropic Thunder grossed $16 mill, for $65 million total in its second week. Definitely not the monster we thought it would be back in May, but for the sake of appearances, it’ll do.

  • I used to think Statham had Star potential but now I think his chance has gone by. He is pretty much at the peark right now, I can only see him going down from here.
  • I thought pineapple express would make about what it did, didnt seem like it would have too many legs after the opening. Tropic Thunder really suprised me, I was expecting at least a $150 million run due to the hype, star power and positive early reviews....House Bunny, where they heck did that come from?

Statham was great in The Bank Job. I think if he keeps branching out into smaller, better projects he could break big at some point. Paying the bills with crap action is working for now, but I'd like to see him as a Bond villain or something. Pineapple Express is performing poorly because all the funny shit is in the preview and it was sort of boring. I figured me and my buds would see it multiple times all toked up but once was more than enough.

Hunter, I'm with you on the Anna Farris boat. I think she's hilarious. Just Friends is a good example of a movie that would've been absolute crap without her and Ryan Reynolds (who is also under-rated IMO).
  • AJ
Faris just lovely and possibly the most underrated actress...not that shes in good movies or anything but still.
  • Roberto
The first five minutes of Pinapple Express were genius. Then Seth Rogan shows up and it just goes down hill from there. I wish they'd do a separarte DVD release of just the first 5 minutes. I'd buy it. That shit was great!
  • Agree with Agony on Ryan Reynolds being underrated. Although him and Statham are oil and water as far as 2 different types of actors, I'd much rather see him break big then Statham.
  • Mikey M
Pineapple Express won't hit 100 million because it is a dud.
Seth Rogan is still riding off the coat tails of his two eariler successes must have been too stoned to write a funny enough script. I laughed maybe 3 times and most of those funny moments were in the TV commercials.
I don't know anyone who has seen Tropical Thunder or wants to. Looks like a good DVD movie to watch.

Love Anna Farris. Love, love, love. Soooo frickin' cute.
  • Anna Faris is hot. Pineapple Express was ok. Tropic Thunder was ok. Statham needs to give Guy Ritchie a call. On second thought, maybe not...I have to see RocknRolla. Ritchie might be a one-trick pony, but I do like that one-trick.

    1) Statham needs to pick his projects better, for every Crank and The Bank Job, there is a Death Race and In The Name of the King to hurt his resume

    2) I agree with everyone that Anna Faris and Ryan Reynolds are underrated

    3) I am not impressed with Seth Rogen in 2008. His script sucked in Drillbit Taylor and I was disappointed with The Pineapple Express. If it wasn't for 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad, I would think that Seth Rogen is overrated

    4) I loved Tropic Thunder and I am going to see it again tomorrow

Am I the only one getting a little tired of the constant repetition in Rogan's scripts? They all contain the exact same three character dynamic. Is he planning on adding a third wheel in Green Hornet that Kato hates for no reason but ultimately learns to respect by the end of act 3?

I liked Farris in "May" - always wondered who she was and where she went . She doesn't look like the same actress. That said, I'll take both of her.

Don't know about that movie, but it looks like a lot of great looking actresses in the one film. Is their a half-naked pillow fight?
  • Agony
I forgot about May, good call!
  • Captain Awesome
I liked Tropic Thunder better when it was called The Three Amigos.
  • Jim
    Tron funkin' blows.

faris and amy adams is a hot comedy sandwich.

    FARIS ON MY FACE!

    Three Amigos!! great comparison

I'm guessing audiences are growing tired of the Seth Rogan films (and I am going to lump in Judd Apatow too), they all have similar characters, with similar dialogue.
It just too much too similar too soon.

Time to do something different and seeing as they have talent shouldnt be a problem...
  • Samantha Pruitt
    i loved her in Smiley Face, she totally made that whole movie, i'm glad she's getting noticed, and i hope she's in some better movies. I still have to see this movie, but i've been hearing so-so reviews :{

Can't stand Faris or anything she is in... the funniest girl in Hollywood is, hands-down, Tina Fey. And she actually writes her stuff...
  • Mandy
I agree with Agony & Hunter that Anna Faris is one of the funniest women. - Just Friends - is hilarious because Anna and Ryan R. He is really underrated, I especially enjoy watching him in comedies althought he can pull off a drama. Side note: Anyone else remember Ryan in 'Fifteen' on Nickelodeon? lol.
