Chuck Palahniuk’s Rant Optioned?

Chuck Palahniuk’s official website has word that the Fight Club/Choke author’s last book Rant, might have been optioned for a big screen movie adaptation. We’re not sure what studio made the purchase, and we really don’t have any more information. I’ve been calling sources for the last few days and have come up short.

But before you get too excited, I must remind you that all of Chuck’s books have been optioned, but so far only two movies have been greenlit. Studios love to develop Palahniuk projects, but no one is willing to front the money, especially in this post-9/11 world. I’m still hoping Survivor will someday be given the go ahead, but I’m not holding my breath.

Rant is probably my least favorite Palahniuk novel thus far (I have yet to find time to read his latest). The book is structured like a oral history of Buster “Rant” Casey. Essentially, the stories are told by an assortment of friends, enemies, admirers, detractors, and relations. Part of the appeal of the book is the differing versions of stories from the different characters. I’m not sure this would translate well to the big screen. I’ve included the official synopsis from the book below:

“Buster Casey was every small kid born in a small town, searching for real thrills in a world of video games and action/adventure movies. The high school rebel who always wins (and a childhood murderer?), Rant Casey escapes from his hometown of Middleton for the big city and becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing, where on designated nights the participants recognize each other by dressing their cars with tin-can tails, “Just Married” toothpaste graffiti, and other refuse, then look for designated markings in order to stalk and crash into each other. It’s in this violent, late-night hunting game that Casey meets three friends. And after his spectacular death, these friends gather the testimonies needed to build an oral history of his short life. Their collected anecdotes explore the charges that his saliva infected hundreds and caused a silent, urban plague of rabies…”

Hmm, i personally think this one has potential. The style in which the book is written could be translated into a documentary-like movie on screen, with multiple 'narrators'. Plus there's lots of interesting trivial stuff all through out the novel and to me its always interesting to hear a character dropping some mind bending info about something that he/she excels at.

i really hope this one never sees the light of day. the book is fantastic if you take it slow and reread. it feels like a return to the fight club 'mind fuck' form.
  • I agree that this is his least filmable book. Way too many different straying plot points that make for a great read, but would seem like an odd potpourri of ideas on screen. The "twist" if you wanna call it that was my favorite part of the book and left me numb by how mindblowing it was. The idea behind it would be muddled by whichever committee is bringing it to screen.

Sounds interesting especially for an onscreen adaptation. Although yeah it wouldn't be surprising if it didn't translate as well as expected given that multiple characters are remembering their friend in what seems to be late in the story. However with careful editing and good acting I bet it has a chance to be pretty decent. Obviously Fight Club was amazing and Choke looks pretty good too. Its no wonder these studios love Palahniuk's work, his writing style and unique events make just about any detail of his plot fascinating.

Sounds like a really cool concept. Strange, but that's to be expected.
  • this book is the worst. Chuck is one of the most overrated authors of our time.
  • Let's all just be thankful its something original and not another fucking remake.

    Your mama's over rated.

    THE IMAGE LOOKS LIKE THE R O B I N COSTUME !!!!
Red, green, yellow and a yellow "R" in a black circle: That's classical Robin!
  • That was not his last book...
  • Least favorite? I enjoyed it so much I read it three times. I completely agree with scott "the book is fantastic if you take it slow and reread." Seriously, If you're looking for a mindblowing experience, look no further than RANT.

It's probably one of his strangest, and that's saying something. It would work best as a faux-documentary, although that style might turn off a lot of people.

It's certainly not the most-unfilmable of his books. That would be the latest, Snuff, which I doubt will ever be optioned (and is my least favorite of his books), unless things get like Idiocracy where's there's a primetime sex and masturbation channel.

Are you kidding? This is his best novel in since lullaby!! Can't wait to see it done.
  • Never read any of his books, but his translations seem to be pulled off well. And if Choke becomes a minor hit, I wouldn't be surprised if even more of his adaptations are released, even Snuff (hey, if they can release Cronenberg's Crash, then surely Snuff could be released).

Snuff needs to be optioned. It will be a challenge for whatever director decides to tackle it, but it can be done without showing too much nudity.

I would love to see the last scene of the book on the bigscreen.

I think Rant is the weakest in a long string of lousy novels (see also: Haunted & Diary) and I probably won't read Snuff or any of his future works. Palahniuk is starting to feel like punk rock; eventually you grow out of it and it's taken over by the next generation.

I'd really like to see a big-screen version of Lullaby myself.

I think Rant was a wonderful book. I also believe that if it is adapted to the 'big screen' that Mr. Palahniuk will turn it into something he believes is his, and not just try to suit everyone else. I have full confidence in him, I look foward to the sequals of Rant.
